Windows Update error 0x8020002E has historically been identified as BG_E_CONNECTION_CLOSED: the download connection closed before Windows finished transferring update files. Start with a restart and a stable connection; if the error returns, restart the update services and safely reset their download cache. These steps can help with an interrupted transfer, but they cannot restore updates that are no longer available for an unsupported Windows release.
What error 0x8020002E means
Historical Microsoft community records identify 0x8020002E as BG_E_CONNECTION_CLOSED, meaning the connection was prematurely closed. Because BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer Service) handles background transfers, the code points to a download or transfer interruption—not proof that the update package itself is defective. The exact-code evidence is mainly from the Windows 7 and Windows 8 era; Microsoft does not appear to publish a dedicated current Windows 11 entry for this code. Microsoft Q&A on 8020002E and a historical Windows Update discussion provide the legacy identification.
Check the full code before troubleshooting. Similar-looking codes have different meanings and may require different fixes:

Before changing Windows Update settings
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update > Update history and note the failed update’s KB number, if shown.
- Run
winverto identify the Windows version and build. The commands below are broadly used on Windows client systems, but the strongest evidence for this exact code comes from older releases. - Save your work and back up important files before advanced troubleshooting. Microsoft recommends backing up before attempting update repairs in its Windows Update troubleshooting guidance.
- Check that the system drive has free space and that Windows’ date and time are correct.
Fix 1: Check the connection and run the troubleshooter
A dropping Wi-Fi connection, public hotspot sign-in page, VPN, proxy, metered connection, corporate filter, or sleep during a long download can interrupt a transfer. Try one update attempt on a reliable private network; Ethernet can help distinguish a Wi-Fi problem. If other devices are also losing internet access, restart the router. Do not keep retrying while the connection is actively dropping. If you suspect third-party security software, test only briefly and restore protection immediately; do not permanently disable antivirus.
- Save open work and restart the PC.
- Connect to a stable network. Temporarily disconnect an unnecessary VPN or proxy, and complete any captive-portal sign-in before retrying.
- Run the Windows Update troubleshooter. On Windows 11, use Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run. On Windows 10, use Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run. Labels can vary by build.
- If the Settings troubleshooter is unavailable, open the Get Help app and run its Windows Update troubleshooter.
- Restart if prompted, then retry the update once.
Microsoft’s current instructions cover Windows 10 and 11 and include the Get Help route: troubleshooting problems updating Windows and the Windows Update troubleshooter.
Fix 2: Restart BITS and Windows Update
Restarting BITS and Windows Update can clear a stuck transfer state. The services also can be managed in the Services console.

Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Fix 3: Safely reset the Windows Update download cache
Windows stores update download data under C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. Renaming the cache folders after stopping the relevant services lets Windows create fresh ones while preserving the old folders as a fallback. This is a common repair for interrupted or damaged downloads, not a guaranteed fix for every connection failure.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Enter these commands one at a time:
net stop wuauserv
net stop bits
net stop cryptsvc
net stop msiserver
ren C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
ren C:WindowsSystem32catroot2 catroot2.old
net start wuauserv
net start bits
net start cryptsvc
net start msiserver
- Restart the PC, then check for updates. The first scan may take longer while Windows rebuilds update metadata.
If a service reports that it is not running, continue unless another error prevents a command. If a rename says files are in use, restart and try again, or stop the services through services.msc before retrying. Do not rename unrelated folders under C:Windows or run third-party scripts that promise an automatic repair. Microsoft describes component resets in its Windows Update reset instructions and Windows Update error guidance.

Fix 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these checks when the error persists after connection and cache steps, particularly if Windows shows signs of damaged system files or servicing problems. DISM repairs the Windows component store; System File Checker (SFC) checks protected system files. They do not repair a failing network path.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run DISM first and wait for it to complete:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- After DISM finishes, run:
sfc /scannow
- When SFC completes, restart Windows and retry the update.
DISM may report that the restore operation completed successfully. SFC may find no integrity violations, repair files, or report that it could not repair some files. A clean result does not establish that the network or update cache is healthy. If DISM cannot get repair files through Windows Update, an advanced repair using installation media may be needed; the media source must match the installed edition, language, architecture, and build. Microsoft explains the commands and their order in its System File Checker guidance and update troubleshooting steps.

- Choose the package matching your Windows version and architecture, and check its applicability and servicing prerequisites.
- Download the package from Microsoft, run the installer as administrator, and restart if prompted.
- Check Update history to see whether installation succeeded.
A mismatched package or missing prerequisite can fail even when the transfer works. Use Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance for the catalog option; avoid third-party package mirrors.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 6: Use a clean boot to look for software interference
A clean boot is useful when an update repeatedly fails during installation, a process appears to block it, or a third-party utility may be interfering. It is less likely to address an unstable internet connection. Microsoft Q&A suggested it for some older systems with this error: legacy error discussion.
Use Microsoft’s version-specific clean-boot instructions rather than disabling services at random. Test Windows Update in the clean-boot state, then restore normal startup and re-enable services and startup items. Do not leave non-Microsoft services disabled. If you suspect security software, keep the test brief and restore protection immediately.

If the error still returns
Check the logs and update context
Record the exact error, failed KB, Windows edition and build from winver, and the time of the failure. Check relevant entries in Event Viewer and the servicing log at C:WindowsLogsCBSCBS.log. Windows Update log data may also help diagnose persistent failures. Do not delete logs or make registry changes just because an online guide recommends it.
Check storage and recent disk changes
If the PC freezes, reports disk errors, or recently had its system partition cloned, resized, restored, or moved, the problem may involve storage or a different BITS error rather than a closed connection. In particular, historical reports associate 0x8020000E—not 0x8020002E—with a changed destination volume. See the Microsoft Q&A discussion of the similar code. Back up data before disk repair; do not run repair commands on a drive showing signs of failure without considering data recovery.
Check managed-network policy
On a work or school device, a proxy, filtering gateway, or organization-managed update service may be closing or redirecting transfers. Contact the IT administrator before changing services or update policy; local repairs may be overwritten by management settings.
Decide whether the Windows release can still receive updates
The exact-code reports largely concern Windows 7 and Windows 8-era systems, so a successful cache repair does not guarantee that an old installation can still obtain its intended updates. Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 are legacy releases, and their update availability depends on lifecycle and applicable support arrangements. Windows 10’s standard free software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes ended on October 14, 2025. As of August 18, 2026, a Windows 10 installation without an applicable support option should not be treated as receiving standard free updates. Check Microsoft’s current Windows release and lifecycle notices for current availability. Where hardware supports it, moving to a supported Windows release is generally a better long-term choice than repeatedly repairing an obsolete update stack.
