Error 0x80070422 usually means the Windows Update service is disabled or stopped. On a personal Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC, the quickest fix is to open Services, set Windows Update to Automatic, start it, restart the computer, and check for updates again. Microsoft documents this cause and procedure in its Windows Update troubleshooting guidance.
Quick fix: enable Windows Update
- Press Win + R.
- Enter
services.mscand press Enter. - Find Windows Update in the list.
- Right-click it and select Properties.
- Set Startup type to Automatic.
- If the service status is Stopped, select Start.
- Select Apply > OK.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
The service should remain running and Windows Update should move past the immediate error. If it starts and then stops again, continue with the checks below instead of repeatedly selecting Start.
What error 0x80070422 means
Microsoft associates 0x80070422 with a Windows service that cannot start because it is disabled. In update scenarios, that is normally the Windows Update service. A stopped service, administrator policy, damaged update components, corrupted system files, or security software can produce the same symptom. The code alone does not prove malware, a failing drive, or a need to reinstall Windows. Microsoft also describes the code as a service-start problem in its upgrade and installation error guidance.
Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
Use the path for your Windows version. Microsoft may also offer the same diagnostic through the Get Help app.

Restart after the troubleshooter completes, then try Check for updates again.
Use an elevated Command Prompt
If Services will not open or you prefer a command-line alternative, open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
sc config wuauserv start= auto
net start wuauserv
The space after start= is required by sc config. These commands set the Windows Update service to start automatically and then attempt to start it. If net start wuauserv returns an error, record the exact text, recheck the service in services.msc, and determine whether policy or another component is blocking it. “The service is already running” does not prove that update servicing is healthy; restart the PC and test Windows Update.

Services method
- Open
services.msc. - Stop Windows Update.
- Open
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionin File Explorer. - Delete the files and folders inside that directory.
- Return to Services and start Windows Update.
- Restart the PC and check for updates.
This removes update downloads and metadata, not your personal files or the Windows installation.
Elevated-command method
Microsoft also documents renaming the update folders, which preserves the old data as a rollback reference:

Repair Windows system files with DISM and SFC
Run these only after checking the service and cache. Open Command Prompt as administrator, run DISM first, wait for it to finish, and then run SFC:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
sfc /scannow
Microsoft explains the order and result messages in its System File Checker guidance. Do not close the window before SFC reaches 100 percent.

Interpret the SFC result
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: no corruption was found in protected system files.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and retry Windows Update.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: restart, run DISM again, and repeat SFC. Persistent failures may require a repair source or Windows recovery option.
- SFC cannot perform the requested operation: Microsoft suggests repeating the scan in Safe Mode.
DISM may obtain repair files through Windows Update. If that client is broken, DISM can fail or lack a source. Microsoft documents using a matching Windows installation source with /Source and /LimitAccess; do not substitute an unmatched Windows version.
Check policy, security software, and basic conditions
- Managed computer: a work or school administrator, Group Policy, or device-management software may intentionally control Windows Update. Contact IT rather than overriding policy.
- Startup type is unavailable or keeps reverting: treat this as a permissions or policy issue, not a reason to edit the registry at random.
- Third-party security software: temporarily test with protection paused only when appropriate, then restore it immediately. Do not leave antivirus disabled.
- Connectivity and access: confirm internet access and administrator rights.
- Date and time: open the date/time settings, correct them, and select Sync now.
- Hardware and storage: disconnect unnecessary drives, docks, and other external hardware, and check free disk space if the error changes to an installation or storage message.
Windows 10 support status
Windows 10 reached the end of its standard support lifecycle on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says free software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes ended then for the normal support program. Repairing 0x80070422 can restore the local update mechanism, but it does not make a standard Windows 10 installation eligible for ordinary post-support updates. Availability can differ by edition and an applicable paid or extended-support program. See Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ.

When to escalate
Contact your organization’s administrator, Microsoft, or the PC manufacturer when the service is policy-controlled, DISM and SFC repeatedly fail, Windows cannot boot normally, or the problem persists after cache and component repair. If 0x80070422 appears while upgrading to Windows 11 rather than installing a routine update, use Microsoft’s separate upgrade and installation guidance because compatibility, drivers, storage, and setup logs may be involved.

Frequently asked questions
Is 0x80070422 a virus?
Not by itself. It is normally a Windows Update service-state error. Malware is only one of many possible explanations for a service being disabled.
Can I fix it without Command Prompt?
Yes. The Services procedure and the Windows Update troubleshooter are graphical fixes. Use commands only if those methods fail or are unavailable.
Is it safe to reset SoftwareDistribution?
Resetting its contents or renaming the folder targets cached update data, not personal documents or the Windows installation. Windows rebuilds the cache as needed.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Do DISM and SFC delete personal files?
No. They repair Windows image and protected system files. They can take time, and they do not guarantee a fix for policy restrictions or unsupported updates.
Should I change the registry?
No as a first-line measure. Registry edits can create additional servicing or boot problems; use Microsoft’s documented service, cache, and repair procedures first.
