Windows Update error 8024A008 is a detection failure. In older Windows reports, it is often associated with Windows believing that setup or the Out-of-Box Experience (OOBE) is still in progress, so Automatic Updates defers detection. That is a useful clue, not a confirmed cause on every PC.
Check your Windows version and how the problem began before resetting update components. If setup is complete and there is no OOBE evidence, follow the ordinary Windows Update repair steps below. Use Sysprep only as an advanced, situation-specific option when the evidence points to incomplete setup.

Check your Windows version and setup history
- Press Win + R, type
winver, and press Enter. - Record your Windows edition, version, and build number.
- Note whether the failure started after an upgrade, reinstall, restore, cloning, or deployment, and whether Windows setup appeared to finish.
The strongest historical reports of 8024A008 involve Windows 8/8.1-era systems and deployment or upgrade situations. Windows 10 and Windows 11 can have Windows Update detection problems too, but Microsoft’s current guidance does not identify this as a Windows 11-specific code.

Try the low-risk checks first
- Back up important files, then restart the PC.
- Check the date, time, time zone, internet connection, and available storage.
- Temporarily disconnect a VPN and non-Microsoft USB devices while testing.
- Check whether third-party security software or endpoint controls may be blocking updates. Do not leave antivirus or firewall protection disabled.
- Write down the KB number if Windows identifies a particular failed update.
Microsoft’s general update guidance recommends starting with these basic checks and the built-in troubleshooter. See Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guide.
Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
Windows 11
- Open Get Help, search for Windows Update troubleshooter, and follow the prompts.
- If available on your build, use Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters → Windows Update → Run.
Windows 10
- Open Settings → Update & Security → Troubleshoot → Additional troubleshooters → Windows Update → Run the troubleshooter.
- You can also open Get Help and search for the Windows Update troubleshooter.
Restart after the troubleshooter reports a repair, then select Check for updates. Labels can vary across Windows versions; Microsoft describes the automated flow and version-specific routes in its Windows Update troubleshooter overview.
Reset Windows Update components
If the troubleshooter does not help and there is no evidence that setup is still in progress, reset the update cache and services. This is a general repair step for a stuck or damaged update cache, not a guaranteed fix for 8024A008.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Command Prompt as administrator. A normal Command Prompt may return “Access is denied.”
- Run these commands one at a time. If a service is already stopped, continue; investigate any other command error before proceeding.
net stop bits
net stop wuauserv
net stop appidsvc
net stop cryptsvc
- Rename the cache directories:
ren %systemroot%SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
ren %systemroot%System32catroot2 catroot2.old
Rename catroot2, not Catroot. Renaming preserves the old folders for recovery; Windows recreates the working folders when the services run. If a folder is locked, check that the services stopped, restart Windows, and retry.
- Start the services again:
net start bits
net start wuauserv
net start appidsvc
net start cryptsvc
- Restart Windows and check for updates again.
If the problem returns after the services restart, the cause may be OOBE state, update policy, damaged servicing components, network filtering, or an unsupported Windows release rather than the cache alone. Microsoft’s current troubleshooting sequence covers service and cache repair at Troubleshoot Windows Update issues.

Repair the component store and protected system files
Use an elevated Command Prompt. Run DISM first, let it finish, and then run SFC:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
Restart when both commands finish, then try Windows Update.
- DISM says the restore operation completed successfully: the repair operation completed.
- SFC found no integrity violations: that scan did not find protected-file corruption; it does not rule out a network, policy, OOBE, or update-service problem.
- SFC found corrupt files and repaired them: restart before testing updates.
- SFC could not repair some files: consult the CBS log and consider an in-place repair instead of repeatedly running SFC.
- DISM cannot find source files: its normal online repair source may be unavailable or unsuitable. Use only matching official installation media, after checking Windows edition, language, architecture, and build.
DISM repairs the Windows image/component store; it does not fix every Windows Update failure. It may itself rely on Windows Update for repair files, so a badly damaged or inaccessible update source can cause DISM to fail. Microsoft explains the repair sequence in its update troubleshooting guidance and its Windows Update troubleshooting documentation.
Check for evidence that OOBE is still in progress
On an older installation, the OOBE explanation becomes more plausible if the error began during or just after setup, an upgrade, or deployment. Historical Windows Update logs include this pattern:
Windows OOBE is still in progress. AU deferring detection
WARNING: BeginDetection failed, hr:0x8024a008
This wording appears in an older Microsoft Q&A discussion; it is useful evidence, but the discussion is historical community guidance rather than a universal current fix: 8024A008 report and OOBE log example.

A command reported in historical discussion is:
%systemroot%System32Sysprepsysprep.exe /oobe
Do not run it merely because you saw 8024A008. Sysprep alters Windows setup and deployment state, and can affect accounts, activation, profiles, or an organization’s deployment process. Consider it only with clear OOBE evidence and a suitable recovery plan. Before doing so, create a full backup or system image; do not experiment on a production server or managed image. For a business deployment, consult the administrator or image owner. The historical Sysprep/OOBE discussion is not proof that this command is appropriate for every PC.

If Windows identifies one specific KB, a standalone package may bypass a broken detection or download path. It will not necessarily repair the underlying update service.
- Record the KB number from update history or the error details.
- Confirm your Windows version and system architecture.
- Find the package through the Microsoft Update Catalog or the relevant Microsoft release page.
- Install the package, restart, and check Windows Update again.
A package for the wrong build, architecture, language, or prerequisite level may not install. An older update may also have been superseded by a newer one. Avoid third-party KB download sites.
Choose repair installation or reset only if needed
| Option | Best suited to | Effect and caution |
|---|---|---|
| In-place repair installation | A PC that still boots, but has persistent component-store corruption or repeated update failures. | Use official installation media or Microsoft installation tools. Select the option to keep personal files and apps if offered, verify compatibility, and back up first. |
| Reset or clean installation | A severely damaged installation, deep configuration or malware problem, or a PC that cannot complete an in-place repair. | Depending on the option selected, apps, settings, or files can be removed. Back up data and be prepared to reinstall applications. |
These are later-stage recovery choices, not first responses to one update code. Microsoft lists repair, reset, or reinstall options after less disruptive troubleshooting in its Windows Update guidance.

Windows 10 standard support ended on October 14, 2025. In 2026, repairing Windows Update may restore update operation, but it does not restore standard free security-update support. Check whether your device can move to a compatible Windows 11 installation, whether an officially available extended-security option applies to you, or whether you are choosing to run an unsupported system. Windows 8/8.1 is also outside current support. See Microsoft’s Windows Update repair and support information.
Quick Recap
When to stop troubleshooting
- If a work or school device is managed, ask the administrator to check update policy, WSUS or Intune configuration, proxy, VPN, endpoint security, and maintenance windows.
- If DISM cannot find a source, use matching official media or move to repair installation; do not try an arbitrary ISO.
- If DISM or SFC reports unresolved corruption, avoid repeating the same scan without addressing the repair source or installation state.
- If the PC is unstable, cannot boot reliably, or may be infected, back up data and use recovery media or qualified support.
