If Windows Autopilot reports 0x80180022, check the Windows edition first. Microsoft documents this Autopilot error for devices running Windows Home; the fix is to upgrade to a supported edition such as Pro, Enterprise, or Education, then retry enrollment. Don’t delete the Autopilot device or wipe the PC before checking this simple cause.
What causes Autopilot error 0x80180022?
Microsoft’s Windows enrollment troubleshooting guide associates the message “Autopilot device enrollment failed with error HRESULT = 0x80180022” with a device running Windows Home. Windows Home cannot complete the Microsoft Entra domain-join path used in this enrollment scenario. Upgrade the operating system to a supported edition.
This diagnosis is specific to the documented Autopilot error and scenario. A generic OOBE message can obscure the underlying issue, so verify the edition rather than assuming. If the device already runs a supported edition, continue with the tenant and device checks below; an edition upgrade will not fix unrelated enrollment problems.

- At the Autopilot OOBE screen, or at the error screen, press Shift + F10 to open Command Prompt. On some keyboards you may also need to hold Fn.
- Enter
winverand press Enter. - Read the edition shown in the About Windows dialog. If it says Home, that is the first issue to resolve.
The original HTMD Blog troubleshooting article uses this OOBE check. From a working desktop, you can also inspect the edition with systeminfo or PowerShell: Get-ComputerInfo | Select-Object WindowsProductName, WindowsDisplayVersion, OsBuildNumber.

Upgrade Windows Home, then retry
Upgrade the device to Windows Pro, Enterprise, or Education using an entitlement valid for your organization. The right route depends on whether the device is covered by an OEM license, Microsoft 365 or Windows licensing, volume activation, CSP, or another agreement. A retail upgrade may not be appropriate for a managed business device; confirm the entitlement and activation method with your licensing administrator or Microsoft partner.
After the edition change, restart the device and return it to a clean OOBE state before retrying Autopilot. Follow the supported reset or redeployment procedure for how the device was provisioned. An Autopilot profile cannot convert Windows Home into a supported edition, and an unofficial product key or guessed activation command is not a substitute for a valid license.

The supported editions listed for the relevant flow include Windows Pro, Pro Education, Pro for Workstations, Enterprise, and Education. Microsoft’s Windows MDM enrollment documentation also explains the Home-edition limitation for Microsoft Entra domain join. For new deployments, account for lifecycle: Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025, so Windows 11 should generally be the target unless a documented exception applies. Before retrying Autopilot
Once the device is on a supported edition, check the essentials without changing tenant settings blindly:

- Network access: Make sure OOBE can reach the internet and the required Microsoft identity and Autopilot services. If the screen shows
OOBEIDPS, investigate proxy, firewall, DNS, or identity-provider access; Microsoft treats that as a separate network-related symptom. - Tenant and registration: In the Intune admin center, go to Devices → Device onboarding → Enrollment → Windows → Windows Autopilot → Devices. Find the device by serial number and confirm it is registered to the intended tenant.
- Profile assignment: Verify the intended Autopilot deployment profile is assigned, and check any user assignment required by the chosen deployment mode. Allow the device to receive the correct configuration before retrying.
- Automatic MDM enrollment: In the Intune admin center, open Devices → Device onboarding → Enrollment → Windows → Automatic Enrollment and inspect MDM user scope. None disables automatic MDM enrollment; Some includes selected users or groups; All includes all users. Ensure the signing-in user is in scope. MAM/WIP scope is not a substitute for MDM enrollment. - Enrollment restrictions: Under Devices → Enrollment → Enrollment restrictions (or Device platform restrictions, depending on the admin-center label), inspect the restrictions assigned to the affected user or device. Confirm Windows MDM is permitted and that the applicable ownership, platform, or edition rules do not block the device. Identify the assignment that applies before changing a default restriction. - License and device limits: If the edition and configuration are correct, verify that the signing-in user has an Intune-eligible license, the tenant has the necessary subscriptions, and the user has not reached an applicable device limit. Licensing and device limits are common causes of other enrollment errors, not Microsoft’s documented primary explanation for
0x80180022. Microsoft’s Autopilot troubleshooting FAQ covers these checks. - Existing management: Look for an existing Intune record, another MDM enrollment, or a Microsoft Entra device state that conflicts with the intended deployment. Reconcile confirmed stale or conflicting records rather than deleting objects at random.
- Deployment-mode requirements: If using self-deploying mode, confirm the device has a physical TPM 2.0 chip and meets the Windows build and profile requirements. A virtual TPM or TPM 1.2 does not meet the physical TPM 2.0 requirement for this mode. TPM requirements vary by deployment scenario, so do not apply this check indiscriminately to every user-driven deployment.
Check the Autopilot record before considering cleanup
Autopilot registration is more than a serial-number listing: it is associated with a Microsoft Entra device object that helps identify and target the device before sign-in. Microsoft warns that deleting this object can itself cause enrollment failures. Check the serial number, tenant association, hardware identity, profile assignment, and any relevant Intune or Entra records before taking action. For a confirmed Windows Home issue, do not delete and reimport the device as the remedy. Consider deregistration or cleanup only when there is evidence of a wrong-tenant registration, incorrect hardware identity, a missing or inconsistent associated object, or a previous management state that cannot be cleanly resolved. Follow Microsoft’s documented cleanup order; do not manually delete the Entra object as a first step.
