Error 0x80072EFD usually means Microsoft Store cannot connect to the service it needs—not necessarily that your PC is offline. Try the fixes below in order: restart Windows, test another network, reset the Store cache, check proxy and TLS settings, repair the Store app, and only then move to advanced PowerShell or Windows repair tools.

What Windows 10 error 0x80072EFD means

Microsoft Store error 0x80072EFD is generally a Store connectivity failure. It can prevent the Store from opening, show a message that you need to be online, leave downloads stuck at Pending, or stop Store app updates.

A browser may still work normally because Microsoft Store and ordinary web browsers can use different Windows networking components, proxy settings, certificates, firewall rules, and VPN routes. Therefore, working web browsing does not prove that Store connectivity is healthy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The error is especially worth investigating if it began after installing a VPN, proxy, antivirus, firewall, DNS filter, or Windows update, or if it occurs only on a work, school, hotel, or public network.

Try these quick checks first

  1. Restart the PC. A restart may be required after Windows updates before Store installations work correctly.
  2. Reconnect to the network. Disconnect and reconnect Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and make sure Airplane mode is disabled.
  3. Try another network. A phone hotspot is a useful diagnostic. If Store works there, the problem is probably your router, DNS filter, captive portal, VPN, proxy, or managed network.
  4. Check your Microsoft account. Open Store and confirm that you are signed in with the intended account.
  5. Install pending Windows updates. Go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, select Check for updates, install everything available, restart, and test Store again.

Microsoft’s Store guidance also recommends checking time, location, TLS settings, the Store cache, and the Windows Store Apps troubleshooter. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance applies to the same class of Store connection problem.

1. Check date, time, time zone, and region

An incorrect clock or region can interfere with certificates, authentication, licensing, and Store availability.

  1. Open Start > Settings > Time & Language > Date & time.
  2. Turn on Set time automatically.
  3. Select Sync now, if the option is available.
  4. Confirm that the time zone is correct.
  5. Open Settings > Time & Language > Region and verify the country or region.
  6. Restart Windows and test Microsoft Store.

2. Reset the Microsoft Store cache with wsreset.exe

Resetting the Store cache is the safest first repair aimed specifically at corrupted Store cache data.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type wsreset.exe.
  3. Select OK.
  4. A blank Command Prompt window should appear. Wait for it to close automatically; Microsoft says this normally takes about 10 seconds.
  5. Microsoft Store should open automatically. Try downloading or updating an app.

If the blank window does not close, wait several minutes before closing it. Then confirm that the command was typed correctly, restart Windows, and try again. If it still fails, continue with the Settings-based repair.

3. Repair or reset Microsoft Store

Windows 10 can repair the Store app without immediately clearing its local data.

  1. Open Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
  2. Find and select Microsoft Store.
  3. Select Advanced options.
  4. Select Terminate, if shown.
  5. Select Repair and test Store.
  6. If the problem remains, select Reset and test again.

Repair attempts to fix the app while retaining its stored data. Reset clears the Store’s local app data and may require you to sign in again. It does not reset Windows or remove all applications installed on your PC.

The exact labels can vary between Windows 10 builds. Microsoft describes these controls in its Store app troubleshooting guidance.

4. Check for a stale proxy or VPN configuration

A stale proxy is one of the most important causes to check when browsers work but Store does not. A VPN or proxy application may leave behind an obsolete server address, including a local address that no longer exists.

View the WinHTTP proxy

  1. Open Command Prompt as administrator. Search for cmd, right-click Command Prompt, and choose Run as administrator.
  2. Run:
netsh winhttp show proxy

Look for an unexpected local address, an obsolete proxy server, or a proxy belonging to a VPN that is no longer running.

Reset WinHTTP to direct access

Only run the following command if this PC is supposed to connect directly to the internet:

netsh winhttp reset proxy

The expected result is effectively Direct access (no proxy server). Microsoft documents this command and its behavior in the netsh winhttp reference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not reset the proxy on a managed work or school computer without permission. An organization may require its proxy for internet access, authentication, security inspection, internal services, or compliance logging. Ask IT for the correct configuration instead.

Review Windows’ normal proxy settings

  1. Open Start > Settings > Network & Internet > Proxy.
  2. Review Automatically detect settings, Use setup script, and Use a proxy server.
  3. Disable only settings that were not intentionally configured.
  4. Fully exit VPN or proxy software.
  5. Restart Windows and test Store.

Closing a VPN does not always remove its Windows proxy configuration. Inspect the settings rather than assuming the VPN is no longer involved.

5. Check TLS settings

Microsoft’s Store guidance recommends checking the secure connection settings used by Windows.

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Enter inetcpl.cpl and press Enter.
  3. Open the Advanced tab.
  4. Scroll to the security settings.
  5. Confirm Use TLS 1.2 is enabled.
  6. On Windows 10 builds that expose it, TLS 1.3 may also be available.
  7. Do not enable obsolete TLS 1.0 or TLS 1.1 merely as a workaround.
  8. Select Apply > OK, restart Windows, and test Store.

The exact TLS 1.3 label depends on the Windows 10 version and configuration. Microsoft recommends leaving TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1 unchecked while using TLS 1.2 and, where available, TLS 1.3.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Test VPN, firewall, antivirus, and filtering software

Security and network software can interfere with Store traffic through HTTPS inspection, firewall rules, DNS filtering, or VPN routing.

For a controlled diagnostic test:

  1. Disconnect the VPN.
  2. Temporarily pause a third-party firewall or web-filtering feature.
  3. If available, temporarily disable HTTPS inspection in the security product.
  4. Test Microsoft Store.
  5. Re-enable protection immediately after the test.

Do not leave antivirus or firewall protection disabled. If one component is responsible, use the vendor’s supported exception or correct its proxy and certificate configuration. On a managed PC, contact the administrator instead of changing security policy.

7. Run the Windows Store Apps troubleshooter

Windows 10 includes a troubleshooter for common Store app problems.

Microsoft’s newer support flows may redirect troubleshooting into the Get Help app, so the interface can differ by Windows 10 build.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Update Microsoft Store itself

If Store opens but downloads or updates fail, check for Store updates in the classic Windows 10 interface:

  1. Open Microsoft Store.
  2. Select See more (the three-dot button).
  3. Choose Downloads and updates.
  4. Select Get updates.

If Store cannot open, skip this step and continue with the cache reset, proxy checks, and app repair. Microsoft documents the Store update procedure here.

9. Re-register Microsoft Store with PowerShell

Use this as an advanced escalation, not as the first fix. Community answers have recommended similar commands for this error, but they are not a guaranteed official cure and can produce errors if the package or Windows permissions are damaged.

  1. Open Windows PowerShell as administrator.
  2. Run:
Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers *WindowsStore* |
  ForEach-Object {
    Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)AppXManifest.xml"
  }
  1. Restart Windows and test Microsoft Store.

The command may complete successfully, report that a package is already registered, fail because the Store package is missing or corrupted, or fail because another Store-related process is using files. Avoid commands that remove or uninstall the Store package as a routine troubleshooting step; they can create additional servicing problems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

10. Repair broader Windows corruption

If Settings pages, Windows Update, built-in apps, or other Windows components are also failing, the problem may be broader than Microsoft Store. In that case, run Windows integrity repairs from an elevated Command Prompt.

First run:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

After DISM completes, run:

sfc /scannow

Restart Windows and test Store again. These are general Windows repair tools, not a specifically verified cure for error 0x80072EFD.

Do not delete the Windows Update cache as a routine Store fix. Clearing the SoftwareDistribution contents belongs to Windows Update troubleshooting and is more appropriate when Windows Update is also failing. Microsoft’s separate Windows Update guidance explains that process.

11. Consider an in-place repair installation

If Store remains broken, Store re-registration fails, and several built-in Windows components are malfunctioning, an in-place repair installation may be more appropriate than repeated registry tweaks or package-removal commands.

Use the symptom to choose the next fix

Store works on a phone hotspot

Suspect the original network. Possible causes include router filtering, DNS filtering, a captive portal, a network-level proxy, or corporate or school firewall rules. Reboot the router, complete any captive-portal sign-in, inspect unintended proxy settings, and ask the network administrator to permit Microsoft Store traffic where appropriate.

Both the browser and Store fail

Start with the connection itself, DNS, captive-portal login, time zone, VPN, proxy, and firewall checks. A broad network problem is more likely than Store cache corruption.

Store opens but downloads remain pending

Prioritize a pending restart after Windows updates, Microsoft-account sign-in, date and region settings, wsreset.exe, proxy and VPN inspection, Store repair or reset, and Windows and Store updates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The problem began after installing a VPN

Run netsh winhttp show proxy, inspect Settings > Network & Internet > Proxy, and reset WinHTTP only if the computer should use direct access. Do not remove an intentional company proxy.

Only one app is affected

This may not be a Store connectivity problem. Check the app’s compatibility, country or region availability, family or age restrictions, device authorization, publisher status, and whether the app has been removed from Store. Microsoft lists these as possible reasons an individual app may not appear or install even when Store is working: Store app availability guidance.

When to stop troubleshooting locally

Escalate to Microsoft Support or your organization’s IT administrator when:

  • The Store fails on every network after cache reset and app repair.
  • The device is managed by a company or school.
  • The proxy is intentional and its configuration is unknown.
  • Windows Update, Settings, built-in apps, or system services are also failing.
  • PowerShell reports that the Store package is missing or cannot be registered.
  • DISM and SFC report errors that cannot be repaired.

Avoid registry cleaners, driver-updater utilities, and generic “PC repair” tools. They are unnecessary for this error and can complicate Windows servicing.
