Wicked PDF launches that external process; a different or incompatible binary, unreachable template assets, insufficient page margins, or differences between a controller and a background job can all produce the same symptom. The fastest diagnosis is to render a minimal HTML header or footer, inspect the exact command Wicked PDF runs, and then add complexity back one piece at a time.
1. Check which wkhtmltopdf binary actually runs
Wicked PDF is a Rails wrapper, not the PDF renderer itself. Its README notes that “The wkhtmltopdf binary is run outside of your Rails application.” That means the executable installed on the host, its build, its path, and the permissions of the process account are part of the rendering setup.
- On the machine or container where the PDF fails, run
wkhtmltopdf --versionas the same operating-system user that runs Rails or the job worker. - Check the binary path configured through
WickedPdf.configure. Confirm the configured executable exists and is the one reported by the version check; development and production may use different paths. - Compare the production executable and platform with the environment where headers work. Check that the Rails process can execute the file and access any required supporting files.
- Inspect Wicked PDF’s logged command or arguments for the failing render. Verify that the header/footer options you expect are actually being passed to the renderer.
Header and footer support is sensitive to the wkhtmltopdf build: the project manual treats the relevant header/footer options as patched-build features. A reported Alpine Linux case (issue #4431, opened July 26, 2019) described headers and footers missing with wkhtmltopdf 0.12.5 even though they appeared on macOS. That report is evidence that platform and binary differences matter, not proof that every Alpine installation fails. Test the deployed binary rather than assuming a local result transfers to production.
2. Confirm the header or footer option and template form
For simple labels, wkhtmltopdf provides text options such as header-left, header-center, header-right, footer-left, footer-center, and footer-right. For richer layouts, pass a valid HTML document with header-html or footer-html through Wicked PDF’s template configuration. Check the generated arguments to make sure the intended option is present and points to the intended template.

The manual documents substitution variables including [page], [frompage], [topage], [webpage], [section], [subsection], [date], [isodate], [time], [title], [doctitle], [sitepage], and [sitepages]. Start by rendering plain text without variables. Add the variables you need only after the basic template appears.
Wicked PDF’s README says a header or footer template can be used without a layout if it supplies a valid HTML document. Use a complete document rather than relying on fragments or on CSS inherited from the main PDF view. For example, a deliberately minimal footer template could be:

</html>Adapt the template location and option syntax to your existing Wicked PDF configuration; the diagnostic point is to remove layout dependencies and dynamic content. If this renders, reintroduce markup, ERB values, styles, images, and scripts separately. A footer-markup change associated with upstream issue #5230 (opened July 14, 2022) was reported alongside an empty PDF, so inspect renderer output and stderr when a markup edit changes more than the header or footer.

3. Give the header or footer enough page space
A header or footer can be correctly rendered yet appear clipped, outside the page, or on top of body content. Header and footer regions consume page space; their spacing does not create more printable page area by itself.

header.spacingorfooter.spacingonly after setting the corresponding page margin. - If the body overlaps the header or footer, increase the matching margin before changing font size or typography.
- If the region is completely invisible, first verify the binary, option, and template path rather than assuming the margin is the only cause.
The wkhtmltopdf settings reference warns that excessive header spacing can put the header outside the PDF and identifies a larger top margin as the correction. Apply the same reasoning to a footer and its bottom margin: spacing and available page area must be considered together.
4. Make templates, styles, and images reachable by the renderer
A path that works in a Rails view is not automatically available to an external wkhtmltopdf process. Relative paths, request-only URLs, authenticated assets, and files inaccessible to the process user can leave a header blank or strip its styling and images.

- Check the resolved template path and confirm the process account can read it.
- Use Wicked PDF’s stylesheet, image, and JavaScript helpers, or references that resolve as absolute URLs from the renderer’s environment.
- If the template relies on local files, check whether the deployment needs Wicked PDF’s
enable_local_file_accessconfiguration. Enable local-file access only when that is appropriate for your security and deployment model. - For remote assets, test that the host can reach the URL and that the request does not require a browser session, cookie, or authentication unavailable to wkhtmltopdf.
- Inspect generated HTML and the renderer’s stderr or logs for failed resource requests. A missing asset can affect other rendered assets too, as Wicked PDF’s README notes in its gotchas.
Do not treat a styled blank region as proof that the template was found: inspect the actual HTML or render the plain-text test first, then test CSS and images as separate dependencies.
5. Compare controller and background-job contexts
If a PDF works in a controller but its header or footer is blank in a background job, compare the environments rather than changing the template at random. An upstream Wicked PDF issue (#599) describes body content rendering while header/footer regions stayed blank in a background task.

- URL generation: Compare host and protocol settings used to build absolute template and asset URLs. A request may supply values that a job has no request context to provide.
- Template inputs: Confirm the job passes the same template path, locals, and dynamic values as the controller.
- Filesystem and process: Compare working directory, executable path, environment variables, and permissions under the worker account.
- Reproduction: Log the final wkhtmltopdf arguments and run the same minimal HTML template in both contexts.
Once the minimal footer works in both places, restore dynamic locals and asset references one at a time. The important distinction is whether the job is invoking a different renderer setup or giving it different inputs.

6. Use a short isolation sequence before changing production markup
- Reproduce on the failing host. Record the OS,
wkhtmltopdf --versionoutput, configured binary path, and whether the failure occurs in a request, a job, or both. - Render plain text. Use a complete, minimal HTML document with no CSS, images, JavaScript, or dynamic values.
- Verify the invocation. Inspect the generated command or arguments for the expected header/footer setting and the correct template reference.
- Check page geometry. Set a matching top or bottom margin, then tune the relevant spacing.
- Restore dependencies individually. Add stylesheets, images, JavaScript, and ERB locals one at a time, checking logs after each change.
- Repeat in the production execution context. Test through the actual worker account and deployed binary, not just a developer workstation.

FAQ
Does a missing footer prove that the Rails template is empty?
No. The renderer is a separate process, so an incorrect binary, unsupported build, inaccessible template, or missing asset can produce a blank region even when Rails has the expected view.
