If a Galaxy S23, S23+, or S23 Ultra keeps dropping Wi-Fi, first find out whether it happens on one network or every network. A problem limited to home Wi-Fi usually points to the router, signal, or compatibility; drops across several known-good networks point more toward the phone, its software, or an app. Work through the low-risk checks below before resetting settings or considering a factory reset.
First, identify what is disconnecting
“Wi-Fi keeps disconnecting” can describe several different failures. Note what the phone shows when the problem occurs, and test another device on the same network.

Try the S23 on a second private network or a known-good hotspot, and test it near the router as well as in the usual problem location. If it fails only on one Wi-Fi network, start with that network’s settings. If it fails across networks, prioritize phone-side checks.

Try the quick, low-risk checks
- Move close to the router and see whether the connection stabilizes.
- Turn Wi-Fi off and back on in Quick Settings or under Settings → Connections → Wi-Fi.
- Restart the Galaxy S23.
- Check whether another device can access the same Wi-Fi and whether it drops at the same time.
- Restart the modem and router. If they are separate, restart each; unplug the equipment, allow it to shut down, reconnect it, then wait for service to return before testing again.
- Confirm that the Wi-Fi password has not changed.
A restart is a diagnostic step, not a lasting fix if the router needs frequent reboots. In that case, check firmware, heat, interference, device limits, and ISP equipment rather than repeatedly restarting it.

Forget the network and reconnect
If only one saved network is troublesome, remove its saved details and join it again. Have the correct password ready: forgetting the network removes its saved credentials from the phone.
- Open Settings → Connections → Wi-Fi.
- Tap the gear or settings icon beside the affected network.
- Tap Forget.
- Select the network again and enter its password.
These steps follow Samsung’s Galaxy Wi-Fi connection guidance. For a hidden network, use Add network under Wi-Fi and enter its network name (SSID), security type, and password.
Check for phone and router updates
On the S23, check Settings → Software update → Download and install, if those labels appear on your version. Menu wording can differ by One UI release, carrier, region, and language. Also update apps through Galaxy Store and Google Play, particularly if the trouble is limited to one app or started after an app update.

For router firmware, use the router maker’s app or administrator page. If phone Wi-Fi is unreliable, a software update may be possible over mobile data if your plan and the download size allow it; some carriers require Wi-Fi for updates. See Samsung’s software-update guidance.

If the problem began after a phone update, record the update date and the software build shown under Settings → About phone → Software information. Timing alone does not prove the update caused the drops. S23 users have posted about update-related disconnections in the Samsung Community, but individual reports do not establish a confirmed, universal defect. Try the diagnostics below and check Samsung Members for a matching device-specific issue. Do not attempt an unofficial firmware downgrade.
Reset Wi-Fi and Bluetooth settings
Try this if the S23 has trouble on more than one network or forgetting and rejoining has not helped. Depending on software version, the option may be labelled Reset Wi-Fi and Bluetooth settings or Reset network settings; look under Settings → General management → Reset. Choose the applicable reset option, tap Reset settings, and authenticate if prompted. Samsung documents this reset in its Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance.
Before you reset: saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords and Bluetooth pairings will be removed, so have network credentials and pairing information available. This reset does not erase personal photos, installed apps, or files. Samsung also describes the removal of stored Wi-Fi networks and Bluetooth pairings in its network-settings guidance. Reconnect to Wi-Fi and pair Bluetooth devices again afterward.

Safe mode temporarily disables downloaded apps and runs the phone’s original software. It can help identify whether a VPN, security tool, or another installed app is disrupting connectivity. Samsung explains the diagnostic value of Safe mode in its app troubleshooting guidance.

- Open the phone’s power menu.
- Touch and hold Power off.
- When Safe mode appears, tap it and confirm if asked.
- Verify that “Safe mode” is shown on the screen, then use Wi-Fi long enough to see whether the usual drop happens.
- Restart the phone normally to leave Safe mode.
Samsung documents the touch-and-hold method in its Safe mode instructions. If Wi-Fi is stable in Safe mode, investigate recently installed or updated VPNs, antivirus or security tools, ad blockers, DNS-changing apps, battery optimizers, network monitors, automation apps, and work-profile or device-management policies. Disable or remove plausible suspects one at a time, then test again; removing everything at once makes it harder to identify the cause. Downloaded apps are unavailable while the phone is in Safe mode.
Check the router if the S23 mainly fails on one network
Spend time on router changes when the S23 works on a hotspot or another Wi-Fi network, or when other devices share the problem. Change one setting at a time, note its original value, and test before making another change. Router labels and available controls vary by maker and model.
Test Wi-Fi bands and band steering
Samsung lists Wi-Fi 6E support for the S23 series in its Galaxy S23 specifications. That does not mean every S23 and router combination will use every band: 6 GHz availability and operation depend on the router, regional rules, security settings, and configuration.
If the router permits it, temporarily separate or disable band steering—sometimes called Smart Connect—and test the S23 on 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and, if available, 6 GHz individually. If drops occur only on 5 GHz, try a narrower channel width. If trouble began after enabling Wi-Fi 6E, test without 6 GHz. These are isolation tests, not guaranteed fixes. Band changes may reduce speed or capacity, so restore a suitable configuration once you know whether a band or roaming feature is involved.

Review security and access controls
If the trouble is isolated to one router, check its security mode and compatibility. A temporary comparison between WPA2-Personal, WPA2/WPA3 transitional mode, and WPA3-Personal (where supported) can help identify a compatibility problem. Do not leave the network on an insecure legacy mode; return to the strongest mode that works with your devices.
Also check access-control lists, device schedules, and parental controls. A router that identifies devices by MAC address may treat the S23’s randomized address as a new device. Review its allowed-device list and stale entries rather than disabling security controls indiscriminately. Confirm that the phone has not been paused by a schedule.
Check firmware, DHCP, logs, and coverage
- Install available router firmware, and reboot the modem and router separately if they are separate devices.
- Check whether the DHCP address pool is full. A full pool can prevent a device from obtaining or renewing an address.
- If the router provides logs, look around the time of a drop for authentication failures, deauthentication events, or repeated DHCP requests. Log wording varies by manufacturer.
- Notice whether failures cluster behind dense walls, in a basement, near interference sources, at a mesh node’s edge, or while moving between nodes. Better router placement may help; a mesh system can help cover multiple rooms or floors, but roaming and performance depend on placement and backhaul.
- If all devices lose internet, contact the ISP after checking the modem/router; Samsung likewise recommends ISP contact when a restart does not restore service.
A new router is not the default remedy. Consider replacement or mesh only when multiple devices, unsupported or unstable equipment, or demonstrated dead zones point to the network. A phone that drops from every known-good network needs phone-side diagnosis, not a router purchase.

These optional checks are most useful if the failure happens when the screen turns off, the phone switches to mobile data, or connectivity changes after using a VPN. Settings and names vary by One UI version, so search Settings for the terms below rather than relying on one universal path.

- Intelligent Wi-Fi: Review options that switch to mobile data when Wi-Fi is weak. If the phone still has a Wi-Fi connection, the switch may be the reason it appears to have disconnected.
- VPN and Private DNS: Temporarily disconnect a VPN or revert a custom Private DNS setting to automatic to test whether internet access returns. These usually affect traffic rather than the Wi-Fi radio connection itself.
- Battery and data restrictions: Review battery restrictions for VPN, security, or network-management apps, along with Data Saver and background-data restrictions if a particular app loses access.
- Auto reconnect: Check that it is enabled for the affected network if the phone fails to rejoin it after a drop.
- Managed devices: A school or employer profile may apply network rules. Contact the administrator before changing managed settings.
Do not change DNS as a first response to a Wi-Fi icon disappearing: DNS can affect name lookups and internet access, but it does not normally explain a radio-level disconnection.
When is a factory reset justified?
A factory reset is a last resort, not a routine Wi-Fi fix. Consider it only after testing another network, installing available updates, resetting Wi-Fi/Bluetooth settings, and testing in Safe mode—and after backing up photos, messages, authenticator data, and files. Confirm that you know the Samsung and Google account credentials needed to set the phone up again.
A factory data reset erases personal data and settings. It may not be a permanent solution if an app or a later software issue is responsible; Samsung makes this limitation clear in its Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance. If several networks still fail, contact Samsung or submit a Samsung Members error report before taking this destructive step when practical.
When to contact Samsung or your ISP
Contact the ISP when several devices lose internet on the same connection, or a modem/router restart does not restore service. The issue may be the ISP connection or its equipment rather than the S23.
Contact Samsung or seek service if the S23 disconnects from several known-good networks, remains unstable in Safe mode after a Wi-Fi/Bluetooth reset and updates, or cannot enable Wi-Fi or see nearby networks. Escalate promptly if Bluetooth is also abnormal or the phone has physical or liquid damage. Samsung directs unresolved connectivity problems toward Samsung Members and service support in its troubleshooting guidance.
To make support more useful, note the exact model (S23, S23+, or S23 Ultra), affected networks, how often drops occur, whether it reconnects automatically, whether other devices drop, the Safe mode result, software build and update date, and—if the problem is router-specific—the router model, firmware, band, and security configuration. Reproduce the problem, then submit an error report through Samsung Members if the app offers that option; include system logs when prompted. A report does not guarantee confirmation or a particular fix, but specific timing and conditions can help support investigate.
