If WordPress editor text has turned white or toolbar buttons have disappeared, first check for stale browser or site caches, then confirm which editor you are using and whether a preference or plugin is hiding controls. If those checks do not help, test for a theme or editor CSS problem on a staging copy before changing production code.
Identify the editor and the missing controls
WordPress has two editor experiences with different controls: the Block Editor and the Classic Editor (TinyMCE). Identify which one you are using before changing settings. In some WordPress.com views, such as content-only editing, layout controls are intentionally hidden; a missing control is not necessarily a fault.
Also note exactly what is affected. White text points toward a styling or contrast problem. Missing toolbar buttons may be caused by the editor mode, a user preference, stale files, or a plugin conflict. A missing sidebar or layout control may instead reflect the editing view.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsClear caches before changing settings or code
Stale browser, plugin, server, or host cache can keep old CSS and JavaScript in use after a change. Test in a private or incognito window, then perform a hard reload and clear the browser cache. If the editor is still affected, purge the WordPress cache plugin and any server or host cache that applies to the site. WordPress.org recommends clearing the browser cache when cached files make changes appear unchanged: clear your browser cache.

Check Classic Editor preferences
If you use the Classic Editor, open your WordPress user profile and check whether “Disable the visual editor when writing” is selected. That preference can prevent the visual editor and its toolbar from appearing as expected. Advanced Editor Tools identifies it as a setting to check when its toolbar additions do not appear: Advanced Editor Tools plugin.
Isolate plugin conflicts safely
A plugin may interfere with editor controls, including when multiple plugins use the same JavaScript resources. WordPress’s troubleshooting guidance recommends disabling plugins one at a time until the source is found: WordPress troubleshooting steps.

- Make a note of the active plugins and, if possible, work on a staging site.
- Deactivate one plugin, then reload the affected editor screen and check whether the text or controls return.
- If nothing changes, reactivate that plugin and test the next one. If the problem disappears, the last plugin you disabled is a likely source; check its settings or contact its developer.
- Re-enable unaffected plugins after testing so they are not left disabled.
Test the theme and editor styles
If cache, preferences, and plugins do not explain the problem, investigate theme styling. Test with a default theme or a clean staging copy rather than switching themes or editing files on a live site without a recovery plan. Inspect custom editor styles, theme.json color settings, and CSS reset rules.
A reset stylesheet shared between the front end and editor can affect TinyMCE buttons and other editor controls. WordPress Developer Resources warns: “If you’re using the same stylesheet for both your frontend and editor styles, be careful about using a CSS reset.” See the add_editor_style reference.

Correct white or low-contrast editor text
Look for CSS assigning color: #fff or another light text color to paragraphs, links, buttons, or an editor container without also providing a contrasting background. A rule intended for the site’s front end may be applying inside the editor, making text hard to see even though the content is still present.
For a block theme, review the relevant color declarations in theme.json, including styles.elements.button.color.text where applicable. WordPress documents that these theme style rules are generated in both the editor and front end: Global Settings and Styles: Styles. Adjust the rule in the theme or editor stylesheet that owns it, and test the result in the editor and on the public site so a fix for one view does not create poor contrast in the other.

Restore extra Classic Editor toolbar buttons
If the issue is that you need formatting controls beyond the Classic Editor’s current toolbar, Advanced Editor Tools can add toolbar buttons. Configure and save its toolbar layout, then clear applicable caches and reload the editor. If an old button arrangement persists, the plugin page recommends restoring the defaults. This plugin is relevant to Classic Editor toolbar configuration; it is not a general fix for Gutenberg styling or missing Block Editor controls.

When to ask your host or a developer
If the issue continues after cache clearing and plugin isolation, and a default theme or staging test points to server-side caching, custom theme code, or a persistent conflict, contact your managed WordPress hosting support or a developer. Share which editor is affected, what changed before the problem began, which cache layers you cleared, and the plugin or theme test results. Avoid editing production theme files until you have a tested change and a way to restore the site.
