If your WhatsApp verification code is not arriving on iPhone, first confirm the full international phone number and make sure the SIM or eSIM for that number is active and can receive ordinary SMS and calls. Check Messages filters and blocked contacts, then request another code only after WhatsApp’s timer expires. If WhatsApp offers Call me, try that once. Repeated requests can trigger a longer cooldown, and there is no iPhone setting that can force WhatsApp to deliver a code.
Why a WhatsApp verification code may not arrive
The failure can be at several points: the number may be entered incorrectly, its mobile line may be inactive, the carrier may restrict the message or automated call, or iOS may place a received text in a filtered folder. WhatsApp may also temporarily limit verification attempts, reject an unsupported number type, or ask you to approve the sign-in on a device already using the account.
WhatsApp verifies the phone number, not your Apple ID, iCloud account, email address, or iMessage identity. A blue iMessage conversation does not show that carrier SMS is working.
Do these checks before requesting another code
- Confirm the country and complete number, including the correct country code. Avoid duplicating the country code or adding a national trunk prefix incorrectly.
- Make sure the number is a supported mobile number and is currently active on a SIM or eSIM you can access.
- Check that the line has cellular service and can receive a normal text and an incoming phone call. Wi-Fi alone is not enough to receive a carrier SMS or call.
- If you use Dual SIM or are traveling with a data eSIM, check that the line for the WhatsApp number is turned on.
- If WhatsApp shows a countdown or says you have requested too many codes, wait for that exact timer before trying again.
- If you are moving accounts from another phone, keep that phone available and logged in until the new iPhone is verified.
WhatsApp’s requirements, reproduced in an Apple Support Community thread, include an active SIM, the full international number, and a stable connection for SMS or calls. The same guidance lists number types that may not be accepted. Read the reproduced WhatsApp verification guidance.

Fix the problem in order
1. Recheck the phone number and country code
- Return to WhatsApp’s phone-number screen.
- Select the country for the number you are verifying.
- Enter the complete number and check the displayed international format. Do not enter the country code twice.
- Compare the displayed number with the active number on the SIM or eSIM in your iPhone.
If the number is on a SIM in another phone, the code may arrive there instead. You need access to the line that owns the number, regardless of which device has WhatsApp installed.
2. Confirm the correct SIM or eSIM is active
- Open Settings → Cellular.
- Tap the line associated with the WhatsApp number and make sure it is turned on.
- If there are multiple lines, confirm you have selected the correct one and that the iPhone shows cellular service.
- Ask someone to send a normal SMS to that number and place an ordinary call to it.
Apple specifically advises users with multiple SIMs to ensure the intended line is enabled. If ordinary SMS or calls also fail, start with the line and carrier rather than changing WhatsApp settings. Apple’s SMS and cellular troubleshooting guidance.
3. Look for a filtered or blocked text
On iOS 26, a text from an unknown sender may not appear in the main Messages conversation list. Check the filtered areas before concluding that no text arrived:

- Open Messages and tap Filters.
- Open Unknown Senders and check Spam, if shown.
- Review Filters → Manage Filtering.
- Open Settings → Apps → Messages → Unknown Senders and review filtering and notification options. You can temporarily adjust these while troubleshooting.
Apple notes that unknown-sender texts can be filtered and that time-sensitive notifications, including verification codes, can be handled separately. Some controls vary by country or region. Apple’s iOS 26 guidance for unknown senders.

Also check Settings → Privacy & Security → Blocked Contacts on iOS 26. On older iOS versions, blocked contacts may appear under Settings for Messages or Phone. A blocked sender’s messages are not delivered. Apple’s blocked-contact guidance and Apple’s Personal Safety guide.
4. Check for carrier restrictions
A carrier can restrict some incoming message or call categories even when other verification texts arrive. Contact the carrier and ask specifically whether the line can receive international SMS, short-code or application-generated messages, automated verification calls, and messages or calls while roaming. Also ask whether the line is suspended, recently ported or activated, subject to a spam filter, or short on prepaid balance.
If you are abroad, verify that roaming and international SMS or calls are enabled for the number being verified. A travel eSIM with data does not substitute for access to the original number’s line; charges may depend on your carrier and plan. 5. Wait for WhatsApp’s retry timer
If WhatsApp says Try again later, reports too many attempts, or shows a countdown, stop requesting codes. Wait for the timer shown in the app; there is no reliable universal wait time. Do not keep tapping Resend, switch repeatedly between SMS and calls, or uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp to try to bypass the limit.

- Leave the correct SIM or eSIM active.
- Wait until the displayed countdown ends.
- Recheck the number, then make one SMS request.
- If it fails and WhatsApp displays the alternative, use Didn’t receive a code? → Call me once.
The call option’s availability and wording vary with country, account state, app version, and WhatsApp’s current flow. WhatsApp guidance reproduced in an Apple Support Community thread says to wait the indicated time and contact WhatsApp if registration still fails after 24 hours; that is an escalation point in the reproduced guidance, not a guaranteed cooldown or fix. 6. Use the voice call option if it appears
Tap Didn’t receive a code? and choose Call me if WhatsApp offers it. Answer on the phone that can receive calls to the number being verified, then enter the six-digit code as spoken. If the call fails too, do not request a series of calls; wait for any timer and investigate line or carrier restrictions.
7. Update and restart the iPhone
- Open Settings → General → Software Update and install an available iOS update.
- Update WhatsApp through the App Store.
- Restart the iPhone and make one verification attempt after any WhatsApp timer has expired.
An update or restart can address device or app state, but it cannot fix an unsupported number, carrier block, or WhatsApp cooldown. Apple recommends current software and basic connectivity troubleshooting for messaging issues. Apple’s messaging troubleshooting steps.
If WhatsApp says the code was sent to another device
This may be an existing-device or account-transfer prompt rather than a failed SMS. Check the phone where WhatsApp is already logged in, keep it connected to the internet, and follow the approval or transfer instructions shown in the app. If WhatsApp offers SMS or a voice call as an alternative, use that route rather than repeatedly restarting the transfer.

When moving from Android to iPhone, do not sign out, wipe, or uninstall WhatsApp from the old phone until the iPhone is verified and the chat migration is complete. Some users have reported transfer situations in which losing access to the old device complicated verification; those reports are anecdotal, not a universal WhatsApp rule. WhatsApp guidance reproduced in the Apple Support Community lists VoIP, landline, toll-free, premium-rate, universal-access, shared-cost, and some personal or nonstandard numbers among types that may not be accepted. A regular mobile number with an active SIM is the safest choice. Eligibility can vary by country and number type. See the reproduced WhatsApp requirements.
Do not use temporary SMS websites, rented OTP numbers, unofficial WhatsApp clients, or someone else’s number. They can put account access and privacy at risk, and they do not resolve carrier or account verification problems.

When the line works for normal texts and calls but WhatsApp verification does not, the remaining possibilities include carrier filtering of automated traffic, a WhatsApp-side delivery problem, an unsupported number, or a rate limit. There is no iPhone setting that guarantees delivery.
- Confirm the number and country code again.
- Check Unknown Senders, Spam, and blocked contacts.
- Wait for WhatsApp’s displayed timer, then make one request.
- Try the voice-call option if it appears.
- Temporarily turn off a VPN if you use one, and try changing between Wi-Fi and cellular data for the app’s internet connection.
- Restart the iPhone. Avoid repeated tests on other phones, which can prompt additional verification attempts.
- Ask the carrier to check incoming SMS, automated messages and calls, roaming, number-porting status, spam filters, and line eligibility.
- If those checks do not resolve it, contact WhatsApp through the app’s support path or its official support channel.
For WhatsApp support, provide the number in full international format, country, carrier, iPhone model, iOS and WhatsApp versions, exact error, when the issue began, and whether ordinary SMS, ordinary calls, WhatsApp SMS, and voice verification work. Never include or disclose the six-digit code.

What not to do
- Do not repeatedly tap Resend Code; wait for WhatsApp’s own timer.
- Do not assume turning off iMessage will repair a carrier SMS problem. WhatsApp verification is carrier SMS or a call, not iMessage. Apple explains the distinction between iMessage and SMS activation.
- Do not guess another person’s two-step verification PIN if the number was previously used by someone else. Use WhatsApp’s official recovery and support process.
- Do not erase or sign out of the old phone before the new iPhone is verified and chat migration is complete.
- Do not reset network settings as a first step. It can remove saved Wi-Fi networks and other configuration, and it is not an established WhatsApp-specific fix.
- Never share the six-digit code, post it in screenshots, use unofficial clients, or pay an activation service to obtain a code.
