Put the headless argument in the Chrome capability that actually creates your WebdriverIO session: browserName: 'chrome' with 'goog:chromeOptions': { args: ['headless', 'disable-gpu'] }. If the test still needs a Linux display server, use Xvfb instead of assuming that Xvfb itself enables native Chrome headless mode.
Apply the Chrome capability fix first
WebdriverIO passes Chrome-specific launch arguments through the goog:chromeOptions capability extension. The option must be inside the capability selected for the session, not in an unrelated configuration object or a different browser capability.
capabilities: [{
browserName: 'chrome',
'goog:chromeOptions': {
args: ['headless', 'disable-gpu']
}
}]
This is the pattern shown in WebdriverIO’s capabilities documentation. The headless entry asks Chrome not to present a visible UI; disable-gpu is included in WebdriverIO’s example. Keep the spelling and nesting exact. A capability named chromeOptions, an argument placed beside goog:chromeOptions, or a flag added to a capability that is never selected will not change the session you are watching.

The following configuration runs headed locally and switches to the documented headless arguments in continuous integration. It is useful when you want to see the browser while debugging on a workstation but never open a window on a CI runner.

WebdriverIO’s setup guidance also demonstrates applying browser arguments conditionally for CI. If your project creates capabilities in a helper, merge function, or environment-specific file, inspect the object after that logic has run. The source file you are reading may not be the capability that the runner sends.
Verify the capability used by the active session
- Find the session entry point. Check the
capabilitiesarray in the configuration passed to the command that starts WebdriverIO. In a multi-environment project, identify the file selected by the CI script rather than the default local file. - Confirm the browser name. The selected entry must contain
browserName: 'chrome'. If another entry is selected, adding Chrome arguments to this one has no effect. - Confirm the nesting. The headless argument belongs in
capabilities[n]['goog:chromeOptions'].args. Check the final array after conditional code and object spreads have been evaluated. - Check the CI branch. A common failure is a condition that tests the wrong environment variable, evaluates before CI variables are loaded, or replaces the Chrome capability with a second array later in the configuration.
- Compare the launch evidence. If the capability visibly contains the flag but a window still appears, compare the browser’s actual launch arguments and trace how the session was created. That is a project-level debugging inference, not a universal WebdriverIO diagnosis.
When you need runner-level detail, enable the logging supported by your WebdriverIO version and keep secrets out of any printed capability object. Do not paste access tokens, cookies, or authorization headers into CI logs.
Choose native headless or Xvfb deliberately
Native headless Chrome and Xvfb solve different problems. WebdriverIO recommends native headless where possible and documents Xvfb for software that genuinely needs a display server or desktop-like behavior.

| Approach | Use it when | What it does not mean |
|---|---|---|
| Native Chrome headless | Your tests do not require DISPLAY, a window manager, a desktop environment, or GLX behavior. |
It does not provide a virtual desktop for code that insists on talking to a display server. |
| Xvfb-backed execution | Linux tooling expects DISPLAY, or the test depends on a window manager, desktop integration, or GLX. |
Starting Xvfb alone does not turn Chrome’s headed mode into Chrome’s native headless mode. |
WebdriverIO’s Headless & Xvfb guide shows an Xvfb-oriented capability using args: ['--headless=new', '--no-sandbox']. Treat that as an environment-specific example, not a universal Docker command. If your test has no display dependency, the native headless capability is the simpler path. If a library fails because no display exists, either remove that dependency or provide Xvfb according to the operating system and container image you run.
Account for Chrome’s headless implementation changes
Chrome’s unified headless mode changed in Chrome 112. Chrome explains that headless Chrome can create platform windows without displaying them, allowing unattended operation while using the normal Chrome browser implementation. Read the current details in Chrome Headless mode.

The older headless implementation is a separate executable, chrome-headless-shell, beginning with Chrome 132.0.6793.0. That distinction matters when a project or article tells you to preserve an old “headless shell” workflow. For an ordinary WebdriverIO Chrome session, configure the current Chrome binary with the capability argument instead of assuming that the legacy implementation is still the default.
CI and Docker checks
Make the runtime match the configuration
A correct capability cannot compensate for a runner that launches a different Chrome binary, uses a different WebdriverIO configuration, or starts a second session from a framework hook. Record the Chrome version and the configuration path used by the job, then verify that the same values are present in the failing run.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDo not copy a display recipe unnecessarily
Native headless does not require a visible desktop. Adding Xvfb, a window manager, and display variables introduces more processes to start and more failure points. Use those components only when the test or one of its dependencies requires them.
Container-specific behavior
WebdriverIO’s Docker documentation discusses configuring Chrome capabilities in its container setup. Apply the instructions to the image and runtime you actually use: container entrypoints, installed Chrome versions, user permissions, and display services differ between images. There is no single Docker recipe established for every project by the available documentation.
Troubleshoot the symptom, not just the flag
A Chrome window appears
- Check that the visible session is the one whose capability contains
goog:chromeOptions.args. - Inspect conditional CI logic and capability arrays assembled with object spreads.
- Look for a later hook or helper that starts another browser with a separate capability.
- If the final capability is correct, compare the actual launch arguments and investigate the session creation path; the presence of a correct configuration object alone does not prove that it was used.
Chrome reports that it cannot open a display
This indicates a display-dependent path is still being used. Prefer native headless if the test can operate without desktop behavior. If a dependency explicitly expects DISPLAY, a window manager, or GLX, provide Xvfb and configure the session according to WebdriverIO’s Xvfb guidance.

The flag is in the wrong form
WebdriverIO’s capabilities example uses headless and disable-gpu, while its Xvfb example shows the explicit --headless=new form. Do not mix snippets mechanically. Use the form documented for the execution path you selected, and verify which Chrome and WebdriverIO versions your project has installed.
Local runs work but CI runs headed
Print or otherwise inspect the resolved CI capability before the session starts. Typical causes are a falsey CI condition, an environment variable loaded too late, or a CI-specific configuration that overwrites the local capability rather than extending it.
Headless starts but a desktop-dependent test fails
Native headless is not a substitute for a desktop environment. If the test checks window-manager behavior, GLX, or an integration that requires a display, move that job to an Xvfb-backed setup. Keep unrelated tests on native headless so they have fewer environmental dependencies.
A project still refers to the old headless binary
Check the installed Chrome version and whether the project explicitly invokes chrome-headless-shell. Chrome documents that the old implementation became a standalone binary starting at Chrome 132.0.6793.0; it should not be assumed to be the implementation behind a normal Chrome capability.
Performance, reliability and cost considerations
Native headless removes the display server from the dependency chain, which generally means fewer services to start and fewer environment variables to maintain. Xvfb is the right reliability choice when a test genuinely needs a display, but it adds a virtual-display process and therefore another startup and failure surface. Choose based on the test’s dependency rather than on whether a window is visible.

The headless argument and Xvfb are execution settings, not separate WebdriverIO products or license tiers. Your cost is the compute and runner time consumed by the browser and any display service. Keep Chrome, WebdriverIO, and the container image versioned together so a browser update does not silently change the behavior you are diagnosing.

If your goal is a clean page image or PDF rather than an interactive WebdriverIO test, ScreenshotNeo makes the capture an HTTP request. Before capture it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. It also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
Use the API documentation at screenshotneo.com/docs/ for authentication and options. A minimal cURL request is:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
The same request in Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
And in Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo supports PNG, JPEG, WebP, and PDF output, with controls for full-page and element captures, device and viewport settings, retina scale, dark mode, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, waits, blocked resources, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparency, resizing, cache TTLs, signed links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, and a usage API. Free accounts include 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to try it.
FAQ
Does Xvfb make Chrome native-headless?
No. Xvfb supplies a virtual display. Chrome still needs its own headless argument if you want native headless behavior; use Xvfb when the test requires display-backed desktop behavior.
Is disable-gpu mandatory?
WebdriverIO includes it in the documented headless capability example. Treat it as part of that example, then verify the behavior of the Chrome and WebdriverIO versions installed in your project rather than assuming every environment has the same requirement.

Why can headless Chrome create windows?
Since Chrome 112, unified headless can create platform windows without displaying them. That implementation detail is why “creates a window” and “shows a visible browser” are not equivalent observations.
When should I keep a headed local run?
Use a headed local branch when visual debugging is useful, and select the headless arguments in CI. The important check is that the capability chosen for each environment is explicit and verifiable.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use native headless when a dependency reads DISPLAY?
Not reliably. A dependency that explicitly requires DISPLAY, a window manager, a desktop environment, or GLX needs that display-backed environment, so use Xvfb or remove the dependency.
What should I check after upgrading Chrome?
Confirm the installed Chrome version, review the current headless behavior, and verify that your project is not depending on the legacy chrome-headless-shell implementation.
