There is no single flag that fixes every WebDriverException. It is Selenium’s broad base exception: the full error message, traceback, and failing line tell you whether Chrome failed to create a session or a browser command failed after startup. First separate those cases, then check browser/driver compatibility, executable access, headless configuration, and—if Chrome did start—page state and synchronization.
How do I fix WebDriverException with headless Chrome in Python Selenium?
Start by saving the complete exception and traceback. Note whether it occurs on webdriver.Chrome(...) or later on a call such as driver.get(...), an element lookup, or a click. A failure during driver construction usually points toward session creation: version compatibility, binary paths, driver access, or operating-system restrictions. A failure after construction needs to be traced to the specific browser command and page state.
WebDriverException is a broad exception, not a diagnosis. Selenium’s Python API defines SessionNotCreatedException separately for session creation failures. The exact message and traceback are therefore more useful than labeling every failure “headless Chrome not working.” See the Selenium Python exceptions API and Selenium troubleshooting guide.
Record the evidence before changing settings
- Copy the full exception text and traceback, including the last line and the line of your own code that raised it.
- Record Python, Selenium, Chrome, and ChromeDriver versions, plus the operating system or container image.
- Record the Chrome options and any custom Chrome or driver paths.
- Identify whether the exception happened while creating
webdriver.Chromeor after that call returned successfully.
Changing several flags at once can obscure the cause. Work through one diagnostic branch at a time and retain the original error and logs.

Fix session creation errors first
If the traceback points to webdriver.Chrome(...) and the session never starts, validate the browser-driver pair and the executables before experimenting with unrelated Chrome flags. Selenium’s common errors guide identifies incompatible versions, system restrictions, and missing, inaccessible, or non-executable drivers as possible causes.
Match Chrome and ChromeDriver versions
For current Chrome automation, Chrome and ChromeDriver should have matching major versions. This matters especially when Chrome is supplied by a system package or CI/container image: the driver discovered on PATH may not have been updated with the browser.
Since Chrome milestone 115, ChromeDriver releases are integrated with Chrome releases. The official ChromeDriver version-selection guidance points to Chrome for Testing releases and JSON endpoints for paired release and version information. Confirm the actual installed browser version and the driver Selenium is launching rather than relying on an old separately downloaded driver.

Let Selenium Manager resolve the driver, or specify it deliberately
Selenium 4.6 and later includes Selenium Manager, which can obtain a needed driver in supported environments. If you use an older Selenium installation, a managed environment that blocks downloads, or a custom browser/driver installation, check that the intended driver is on PATH or configure its exact location with Selenium’s Service object. The official driver installation guidance describes the available route.
For a browser installed somewhere other than Selenium’s default location, Chrome options support setting the browser binary. Do not set a custom path unless you have confirmed that it exists and is the browser you mean to launch. Selenium’s Chrome documentation covers browser options and service configuration.
Check file access and operating-system restrictions
- Verify that Chrome and ChromeDriver exist at the configured paths.
- Confirm the driver is executable by the account running Python.
- Check that process restrictions or system policy are not preventing Chrome from starting.
- In Linux and containers, use the actual Chrome/ChromeDriver error output to investigate missing libraries, permissions, sandboxing, or resource limits.
Do not apply --no-sandbox or shared-memory workarounds automatically. The symptom alone does not establish that either is appropriate; use the logged failure to identify the environmental cause and choose a targeted fix.

Use a supported headless Chrome configuration
For modern Chrome, add --headless through ChromeOptions. Chrome’s updated headless implementation arrived in Chrome 112. Since Chrome 132, the old headless implementation is distributed separately as the chrome-headless-shell binary. Current Chrome guidance supports --headless; use the modern mode unless your environment specifically requires legacy behavior. This minimal script uses current Python Selenium syntax:

If a specific older environment requires it, Selenium’s Chrome documentation also lists --headless=new; do not treat it as a universal cure for version or startup problems.

Enable ChromeDriver logs when startup still fails
When version, path, and access checks do not explain a startup failure, collect ChromeDriver output. Selenium’s Chrome documentation shows webdriver.ChromeService(log_output=...) for Selenium 4.11 and later; the Python Service API documents a path or stream for log_output. Preserve the log alongside the traceback so that the failing startup stage is visible.

driver.quit()If you need an explicit driver executable, set it with Service(executable_path="/path/to/chromedriver"), replacing the path with the verified local path. If Chrome starts, troubleshoot the failing command
If webdriver.Chrome(...) returned a driver and a later command fails, focus on that command instead of changing startup flags. Selenium’s official troubleshooting page says, “The most common Selenium-related error is a result of poor synchronization.” Use waits when page content or an element is not immediately ready.

Check navigation and page state
- Confirm the requested page loaded and inspect the current URL, title, or page source where useful.
- Verify that the locator still matches the page and that the element is present in the current document.
- For content that appears asynchronously, wait for the expected condition rather than assuming it exists immediately.
- Read the traceback to identify whether the failure arose during navigation, lookup, or interaction.
For example, an element lookup can fail because the element has not appeared yet, because the locator is wrong, or because the page differs from the one expected. Selenium’s common errors guide explains these cases; the broader troubleshooting guide recommends waits for synchronization issues. Trying another browser can also help isolate whether the problem is specific to the driver/browser combination.

When local WebDriver is the wrong fit
Local WebDriver is the straightforward choice when you control the browser, driver, and operating environment and need direct control over installed versions. Remote WebDriver or hosted browser testing is worth considering when you need remote execution or a controlled browser environment. Compare supported browser and version coverage, operating-system coverage, integration, reproducibility, diagnostics, and cost before selecting a service.
