If VLC has no sound on Windows 11, first determine whether the problem affects VLC alone. If other apps also have no audio, check Windows’ output device, services, and drivers. If only VLC is silent, check VLC’s mute state, audio track, Windows Volume Mixer routing, and VLC’s output settings before reinstalling anything.
Work through these fixes in order. The menu names can vary slightly between VLC releases; VideoLAN’s detailed documentation covers the VLC 3.0 desktop interface.
1. Find out whether VLC is the only silent app
Play a Windows notification sound, a YouTube video, or audio in another media app. Then try a second, known-good file in VLC.
- Everything is silent: troubleshoot Windows, the output device, audio services, or drivers.
- Only VLC is silent: focus on VLC and Windows’ per-app audio settings.
- Only one file is silent: inspect that file’s audio tracks and test whether it actually contains usable audio.
This distinction matters because Windows 11 can mute or route one application independently of the system’s other sounds. See Microsoft’s app-audio troubleshooting guide.

2. Unmute VLC and raise its volume
- Open a video in VLC and start playback.
- Check the speaker icon in VLC’s playback controls. Click it if VLC is muted.
- Raise VLC’s internal volume using the on-screen volume control or keyboard controls.
- Check that the Windows taskbar volume is not muted and is high enough to test.
Restore normal volume first. Increasing VLC beyond 100% can amplify a quiet recording, but it may also introduce distortion. VLC’s playback controls and Audio menu include volume and mute controls; see VideoLAN’s menu documentation.
3. Select an actual audio track
- While the video is playing, select Audio > Audio Track.
- Choose an available track instead of Disable.
- If the file has several tracks, test each one.
- Restart playback if the change does not take effect immediately.
This commonly matters with MKV files, language tracks, commentary tracks, screen recordings, and files whose first track is silent. VLC documents this control in its audio settings guide.
4. Check VLC’s audio device and speaker mode
Open Audio > Audio Device and select the output connected to your speakers or headphones. For ordinary headphones or two-speaker setups, test Stereo rather than an unsuitable surround mode.
If you need to set a device permanently:
- Open Tools > Preferences.
- Set Show Settings to All.
- Open Audio > Output modules.
- For DirectX, open DirectX and choose the correct Output device.
- For WaveOut, open WaveOut and choose Select Audio Device.
- Click Save, close VLC, and reopen it.
Use the path that matches the output module shown in your build. VideoLAN’s Windows FAQ documents these options.

5. Check VLC in Windows 11 Volume Mixer
- Go to Start > Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer.
- Under Apps, find VLC.
- Make sure VLC is not muted and raise its app volume.
- Check VLC’s Output device and select the intended speakers or headphones.
Windows may send VLC to an HDMI monitor, dock, USB headset, or another device while other apps use your normal speakers. If VLC does not appear, close it, reopen it, start playback, and check Volume Mixer again. An active audio session may be needed before Windows lists the app.
6. Select the correct Windows output device
- Open Start > Settings > System > Sound.
- Under Output, select the speakers, wired headphones, USB device, Bluetooth headphones, television, or other device you are actually using.
- Check physical mute controls, cables, Bluetooth connection status, and the device’s own volume.
- Open More sound settings, select the Playback tab, right-click the intended device, and choose Set as default when available.
Typical causes include an HDMI monitor without speakers becoming the default, headphones being connected after VLC opened, or a dock or television taking control of the output. Microsoft’s speaker and headphone guide covers output selection.
7. Turn off audio enhancements
- Go to Settings > System > Sound.
- Select the current output device.
- Find Audio enhancements in the device’s advanced settings.
- Set it to Off, then test VLC.
Enhancements from Windows, a laptop manufacturer, a sound-card utility, or a headset application can interfere with playback. Disabling them may also remove equalization, virtual surround, or loudness features, so treat this as a diagnostic test. See Microsoft’s guidance on low or quiet sound.
8. Try a different default audio format
- Open Settings > System > Sound and select the output device.
- Open its advanced properties.
- Under Default format, choose another available format.
- Test VLC after each change and keep the setting that works.
There is no universally correct sample rate or bit depth. The available and compatible choices depend on the device, driver, USB hardware, Bluetooth profile, and Windows configuration. Microsoft recommends this test for missing, quiet, or distorted audio; see its distorted-audio guidance.

9. Fix missing dialogue or surround-sound problems
If music and effects play but voices are missing or extremely quiet, a 5.1 track may be sending dialogue mainly to a center channel that your stereo headset or speakers are not reproducing correctly.
- Check the speaker configuration in Windows or your sound-card control panel.
- In VLC, select Audio > Audio Device > Stereo.
- For advanced VLC settings, open Tools > Preferences, set Show Settings to All, then go to Audio > Output modules > DirectX.
- Test the available Speaker configuration options, save, and restart VLC.
Also test another audio track if the file contains multiple tracks. VideoLAN specifically recommends checking Windows and VLC speaker setup for missing dialogue in 5.1 audio.
10. Change VLC’s audio output module
- Open Tools > Preferences.
- Set Show Settings to All.
- Select Audio > Output modules.
- Try DirectX.
- If that fails, try Win32 waveOut or WaveOut, depending on the label in your version.
- Click Save and restart VLC after each change.
DirectX and Win32 waveOut should work in most cases, but another module can resolve an output compatibility problem. VLC does not support ASIO, so ASIO is not a normal VLC fix. Do not change several advanced settings at once.
11. Restart Windows audio services
If audio works inconsistently across applications, restart the Windows services responsible for audio sessions:

- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
services.mscand press Enter. - Right-click Windows Audio and choose Restart.
- Right-click Windows Audio Endpoint Builder and choose Restart.
- Reopen VLC and test playback.
Microsoft lists these services among the remedies for app-specific audio failures.
12. Reset VLC preferences
- Open VLC and select Tools > Preferences.
- Click Reset Preferences and confirm.
- Save if prompted, close VLC, and reopen it.
- Test a known-good file before restoring custom settings.
This resets VLC settings; it does not delete your personal media. It can remove custom output choices, interface settings, subtitles, and other preferences. VideoLAN notes that incorrect settings or a broken plugin cache can cause problems; see its preferences documentation.
If VLC will not open normally, use the Windows FAQ’s configuration-folder method only as an advanced recovery step. Rename or back up the VLC configuration folder in your user application-data area before removing anything, because this also discards saved preferences.

When Windows cannot detect the audio device
If Sound shows no speakers or headphones, or says that no audio output device is installed, VLC is not the first problem to solve.

- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the audio device and choose Enable device if available.
- If it is missing, select View > Show hidden devices.
- Select Action > Scan for hardware changes.
- Install the current Windows 11 audio driver from the PC, motherboard, headset, or sound-card manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test VLC.
Avoid third-party driver-updater utilities. Microsoft explains how missing, disabled, outdated, incompatible, or corrupted drivers can prevent an output device from appearing in Windows in its missing-device guide.
When the problem started after an update
Restart Windows, install pending updates, and check the hardware manufacturer’s current Windows 11 driver. If a driver update appears to have caused the issue, open its properties in Device Manager and use Roll Back Driver if Windows provides that option. Also test built-in speakers, wired headphones, or another known-good output. Windows 11’s Get Help app includes an automated audio troubleshooting flow.
If only one video has no sound
Try another file first. In the silent file, open Audio > Audio Track and test every available track. You can also open VLC’s media information view to inspect whether the file contains an audio stream at all. A file may be damaged, contain a silent track, or genuinely have no audio; do not assume VLC is defective until other files play normally.
When should you reinstall VLC?
Reinstall VLC only after checking VLC’s audio state, Windows Volume Mixer, output devices, speaker configuration, output module, preferences, and—when necessary—Windows audio detection and drivers. Reinstallation will not fix a monitor selected as the output, a muted app, a missing driver, or a silent media file. It may also leave user-profile preferences intact depending on the uninstall process.
If you do reinstall, use VideoLAN’s official Windows download page, not an unofficial mirror or codec-pack site. VideoLAN’s page displayed VLC 3.0.23 and support through the latest Windows 11 release on August 18, 2026; the version shown may change over time.
