On a Mac running macOS Tahoe 26, “USB Accessories Disabled” can describe two different problems: macOS may be waiting for you to approve an accessory, or the Mac may be unable to supply enough power to a connected device. The right fix depends on the message. Unlock and approve the accessory if you see an approval prompt; if you see “USB Devices Disabled” or a message that the device needs more power, test the port, cable, hub, and power supply instead.
Apple’s USB Devices Disabled troubleshooting guide recommends reconnecting the device, trying another port, connecting directly to the Mac instead of through a hub, and powering a self-powered hub. Tahoe 26 is the operating-system context here; Apple’s documentation does not establish that Tahoe 26 universally causes USB failures.
First identify which USB problem you have
Look at the wording and what happens when you connect the device:

- An “Allow accessory to connect” prompt appears: this is an accessory-approval or security setting. It is relevant to Apple-silicon Mac laptops. Unlock the Mac and allow the accessory.
- The alert says “USB Devices Disabled,” “This accessory needs power,” or that the operation cannot be completed: suspect insufficient power, a hub or dock, a cable, or a hardware fault. Changing an approval setting will not provide more power.
- The device charges but does not transfer data or appear: charging alone does not prove the data connection is working. The accessory may have been denied, the cable may be charge-only, or the device may be detected but not mounted.
Apple documents the approval behavior for Apple-silicon Mac laptops and separately documents power-related USB alerts. Not every accessory will trigger an approval prompt. See Apple’s accessory connection guidance and its power-alert troubleshooting steps.

Approve the accessory on an Apple-silicon Mac laptop
- Connect the USB, Thunderbolt, or SD-card accessory.
- Unlock your Mac. The Mac must be unlocked before you can approve an accessory.
- When prompted, choose Allow.
If you chose Don’t Allow or dismissed the prompt, disconnect the accessory and connect it again to request approval. When denied, it will not be recognized or receive data access, although it may still charge the Mac or itself. After three or more days locked, your Mac may require you to unlock it again before a previously allowed accessory can be used.
Review “Allow accessories to connect” in Tahoe 26
On an Apple-silicon Mac laptop, open Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security, then scroll to Allow accessories to connect. Depending on the interface presentation, this may appear under an Accessories subsection. The choices are:
- Always Ask
- Ask for New Accessories — Apple’s default
- Automatically Allow When Unlocked
- Always Allow
Ask for New Accessories is a sensible default. If you regularly connect trusted accessories, Automatically Allow When Unlocked can reduce prompts while retaining the unlocked-Mac safeguard. Avoid switching to Always Allow just to address a power alert: it does not fix insufficient power and reduces protection from unknown physical accessories. An organization administrator may control this setting on a managed Mac.
Apple’s macOS Tahoe 26 enterprise documentation says accessory-security settings also apply from macOS into macOS Recovery, including previously allowed accessories and the allowUSBRestrictedMode device-management restriction. This chiefly matters for managed Macs and recovery workflows; it is not a routine consumer troubleshooting step.

If the alert says “USB Devices Disabled” or “needs more power”
Follow this sequence before changing settings or replacing hardware:
- Disconnect the accessory, then reconnect it.
- Try a different USB or Thunderbolt port on the Mac.
- If it is connected through a hub, dock, or external display, connect it directly to the Mac instead.
- If the hub or dock has its own power adapter, connect that adapter to AC power.
- Disconnect other accessories and test the problem device by itself.
- If its cable is removable, try another known-good cable that supports the connection you need.
- Restart the Mac, then reconnect the device after startup.
These are Apple’s first-line steps for the power-related alert. A powered hub can help when a bus-powered setup cannot supply enough power, but it will not correct every cable, compatibility, firmware, or hardware problem.
Isolate a USB-C hub or dock
A dock adds several possible failure points: its AC adapter, upstream cable to the Mac, downstream cable, port, power budget, and the connected device itself. Test it in a controlled order:

- Connect the dock to the Mac and connect its AC adapter.
- Add one device at a time until the alert returns.
- Test the device that triggers the alert directly on the Mac.
- If the dock’s upstream cable is detachable, test a known-good compatible replacement.
If the device works directly but fails through the dock, the dock, its power supply, cable, compatibility, or power budget is the likely bottleneck. Check the manufacturer’s information for your exact dock model before attempting a firmware update. Apple also notes that devices connected through a hub or external display may not respond if they are incompatible; see its Mac port and hub guidance.

Check the cable and Mac port
A cable can fit the connector but still be damaged, intermittent, or unsuitable for data transfer. For a phone, camera, drive, or other data device, try a known-good data-capable cable. For charging, use a cable that supports charging as well. Inspect the cable ends and Mac port for visible damage or debris; do not force a connector into a port or insert tools that could damage it.
Try the same accessory and cable in another Mac port, then try a known-good accessory in the suspect port. If several devices fail only on one port, that points more strongly to a port problem. If the failure follows one cable or accessory across ports, replace or troubleshoot that item before assuming the Mac is at fault.
Check whether macOS detects the accessory
- Hold down Option.
- Choose Apple menu > System Information.
- Select USB or Thunderbolt/USB4 in the sidebar.
Use what appears as a clue, not as a repair:
- The accessory appears: the Mac is detecting hardware. The remaining issue may involve accessory approval, the device itself, a driver or app, or (for a drive) mounting.
- Only the hub appears: check the downstream cable, accessory, and hub port.
- Nothing appears: test another port and cable, check hub or accessory power, and consider compatibility or hardware problems.
Do not start by deleting system files, changing kernel settings, or running undocumented Terminal commands. Apple’s documented first checks are physical reconnection, another port, direct connection, accessory approval, and adequate hub power.
If the missing device is an external drive
First determine whether the drive is detected as USB or Thunderbolt hardware in System Information. If it is detected but missing from Finder, the issue may be that it is not mounted or that Finder is not set to show it. Check Finder settings and then look for the drive in Disk Utility.

If Disk Utility sees the drive, you may be able to mount it. Consider First Aid only after protecting important data and confirming you have a backup. Do not initialize, erase, or reformat a drive just because it is missing from Finder—that can destroy data and does not diagnose a power or connection problem. If the drive repeatedly disconnects or reports insufficient power, try its dedicated power supply or a powered hub.

A USB-C charger’s wattage and the power available to a USB accessory are different issues. A higher-wattage Mac charger is not a guaranteed fix for an accessory-disabled alert. For a USB-C Mac laptop, Apple says you can charge with a USB-C power adapter or display that supports USB Power Delivery. Use at least the minimum wattage appropriate for your Mac; an underpowered adapter may charge slowly or fail to keep up under load.
To inspect the connected adapter’s reported wattage, hold Option, choose Apple menu > System Information, select Power, and look for AC Charger Information. Details are in Apple’s USB-C charging guidance.

Test the outlet with a known-good device, restart the Mac, and try another USB-C charging cable. Some USB-C cables support data but not charging; adapters may also shut down because of overheating or electrical line noise. Inspect ports for debris and install available updates. If charging still fails, Apple’s power-adapter troubleshooting guide provides further steps. Apple’s SMC-reset advice is specifically for Intel-based Macs; do not apply Intel-only reset instructions to an Apple-silicon Mac as a generic Tahoe fix.

If you use the Mac with its lid closed
A closed-lid dock setup can make accessory approval difficult because the Mac needs to be unlocked and the prompt needs to be accepted. Apple’s documented sequence is to open the Mac and allow the external display, mouse, and keyboard first. After those are approved, other accessories can be allowed while the Mac is used with its lid closed or in a dock.
Common device-specific checks
- Keyboard or mouse: connect it directly and approve it if prompted. If it fails only through the dock, test a dock port and cable.
- Camera or phone: unlock the devices where applicable and use a known-good data cable; a charge-only cable may not transfer data.
- SD-card reader: on an Apple-silicon Mac laptop, the card or reader may require accessory approval.
- External SSD or hard drive: check power, cable, System Information, and Disk Utility; do not erase it as a first step.
- Audio interface or webcam: test directly and consult the manufacturer’s support for the exact model if its software or firmware is involved. The USB alert alone does not establish that an audio driver is at fault.
When to replace something—and when to get service
Replace a cable when the fault follows that cable or it lacks the data or charging capability required. Consider a powered hub only when testing shows a bus-powered hub or dock is the bottleneck. If one accessory fails across ports and computers, investigate the accessory. If it works directly on the Mac but not through a dock, investigate the dock and its power supply before buying another one.
Contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider if the problem follows a Mac port, affects several known-good accessories and cables across multiple ports, or persists after direct connection, adequate hub power, restart, and available macOS updates.
