“Upload Pending” means Word has not yet saved your latest changes to the document’s server location. Microsoft says a network connection problem is the most common cause, and recommends leaving Word open with AutoSave enabled so it can retry. Your edits may still be available locally, but they are not confirmed on the server; preserve a separate copy before closing Word or choosing Discard.
What “Upload Pending” means
Word has local changes it has not yet synchronized to the server copy. You may still be able to read and edit the document, but the cloud or server version may be older. AutoSave and coauthoring can be affected until the upload completes. Microsoft identifies network connectivity as the most common cause, not the only possible one. A progress bar or dismissible message may also appear.
Microsoft’s guidance for desktop Word for Microsoft 365 on Windows and Mac is to keep Word open with AutoSave on while it retries in the background. Some controls differ in Word for the web, mobile apps, and other Office editions. Microsoft’s coauthoring troubleshooting guide describes the status and recovery options.

- Keep the document open. Do not close Word, discard changes, or delete cached files while the upload is pending.
- Check that the computer is online. Open another website or cloud service. If the connection is unstable, reconnect or try a more reliable approved network.
- Confirm AutoSave is on. If the AutoSave control is available for this file, make sure it is enabled.
- Wait for Word to retry. Keep the document open and watch for the pending status to clear.
- Check the result before relying on the server copy. Once the status clears, verify the document’s updated time or open it from its cloud location.
- If it remains pending, preserve your edits. Save a separate copy to a location you can access, then inspect Word’s attention area.
Microsoft’s documented first step is to leave Word open with AutoSave enabled; repeatedly closing and reopening the document can complicate recovery. A separate copy is a precaution, not proof that the server upload has succeeded.

Check Word for an action you need to take
In current Microsoft 365 desktop apps, upload problems appear under File > Open > Files Needing Attention. Open that area, select the affected document if it appears, and follow the prompt Word provides. The exact labels and availability can vary by Word version, platform, account, and update channel.
The standalone Office Upload Center has been removed from Microsoft 365 apps. Do not assume you need to find it if you use Microsoft 365. Microsoft documents the current location and the older tool’s status on its Office Upload Center support page.
If the message changes to “Upload Failed”
“Upload Pending” generally calls for waiting while Word retries. “Upload Failed” means you should read the specific recovery option shown; the right action depends on whether the problem is a failed save, a conflict, or a newer server copy.

“Save a Copy” or “Discard”
If you need any unsynchronized edits, choose Save a Copy first and save under a new name or to another location. Reopen the live document and reapply any changes missing from the server version. Do not choose Discard until you have preserved the edits you want to keep; discarding can remove changes that have not reached the server.
Microsoft also describes copying the document’s contents into a new window, choosing Discard Changes, and then reapplying the missing edits. Use that route only after making sure the content you need is preserved.
“Resolve Conflict”
A conflict can occur when local and server versions have diverged, including while other people are editing the document. In Word’s prompt:

- Select Resolve.
- Open the Conflicts tab.
- Select Next to move through each conflict.
- Accept or reject the changes as appropriate, then close the conflict view.
Review each item rather than overwriting the server copy blindly. Microsoft describes the process as similar to working with tracked changes.

If Word reopens the document with recovered edits, select Review Changes in the error bar. If needed, choose All Markup, then Show Markup > Specific People > Microsoft Word. Review the recovered changes and accept or reject them.
“Refresh Recommended”
If Word says a newer server version is available and there are no local edits you need to preserve, select Refresh to continue from that version. If you are unsure whether local changes matter, save a copy before refreshing.

Check the connection, account, permissions, and file location
If waiting does not clear the status, check the other parts of the save path. These are diagnostic checks, not guaranteed fixes:
- Network: Test another site or service. If you use a VPN, proxy, or restricted workplace network, check whether the problem changes on an approved connection; do not bypass your organization’s network rules.
- Account: Confirm Word is signed in with the account that has access to the document. If the account recently changed, save a separate copy of important edits before signing out and back in.
- Access: Confirm the document still exists in its original location and that you have permission to edit it. If possible, test access through the relevant web interface.
- Storage location: Check whether the file is in OneDrive, SharePoint, a company server, a synced folder, or another document-management system. A file saved only to the computer normally should not require this kind of server upload.
- Shared editing: If other people are working in the file, avoid replacing the live version with a separate copy until you have reviewed any conflict prompt and coordinated which changes to retain.
Word’s AutoSave and coauthoring behavior depends on the storage service, account, file format, permissions, and app version, so not every server-backed location behaves identically.
For older Office versions: use Office Upload Center if available
This section is for older Office installations that still include Office Upload Center, including some Office 2016 and earlier setups. Microsoft says the standalone center was removed from Microsoft 365 apps. If the tool is present, open it from the Windows notification area or Start menu and locate the affected file. Depending on the state, available actions can include:

- Upload or Upload All to retry an upload.
- Resume Uploads if uploads were paused; Pause Uploads is also available in some versions.
- Open to Resolve to address an issue in the file.
- Save a Copy to preserve the local version.
- Sign In if the account needs attention.
- Discard to abandon local changes—use only after saving any edits you want to keep.
Labels and controls vary by older Office version. If you cannot find the center, use Word’s current Files Needing Attention area where available rather than deleting cache files or searching for undocumented folders.
Last-resort recovery and when to get help
If Word remains responsive but cannot complete the upload, keep the document open and preserve a separate copy of the unsynchronized content before attempting a more disruptive recovery. If Word presents a failed-upload option, follow its specific save-copy or conflict-resolution path. Clearing the Office Document Cache is not a routine reset: Microsoft warns that clearing cached files deletes document content from the cache. Do not clear it while edits remain unsynchronized, and do not substitute registry edits, undocumented cache-folder deletion, or third-party repair utilities.
Contact your organization’s IT team or Microsoft Support if several files remain pending, multiple people are affected, the storage location is inaccessible, your editing permissions changed, or the problem continues after connection and account checks. For work or school files, an administrator may need to investigate organizational access or network policies.
