“Updating Cloud Music Library” is Apple Music’s status for processing your Sync Library. It can be normal during a first sync or after adding lots of music, but a status that makes no progress, repeated errors, or missing tracks calls for troubleshooting. Start by backing up your local music; Apple says Apple Music is not a backup service, and turning Sync Library off removes downloaded music from devices.
Then check Apple’s service status, your subscription and Apple Account, and Sync Library settings. If those are correct, update the library from the computer that holds the original music and inspect the affected tracks before considering a reset.

Before you troubleshoot: protect your music
If your library includes music imported from CDs or other local files, preserve both the audio files and the Music library database before making major changes. Keep a separate backup; a cloud-matched track is not an archival copy of your original file, metadata, or artwork. Apple explicitly says Apple Music is not a backup service (Apple’s Sync Library guidance).

Identify the computer that contains the original library. That is the source computer for the checks below. Do not delete its Music library or imported files to try to force a sync.

Is it stuck, or still working?
Apple does not give a universal completion time. A large library, a first-time sync, many imported files, network conditions, or individual tracks that need attention can all affect progress. Keep the source computer awake, connected to the internet, and running Music if the progress indicator is moving or songs are gradually appearing on another device.
If the status has shown no meaningful progress for a prolonged period, an error appears, or tracks remain missing, continue with the checks below rather than waiting indefinitely.
1. Check Apple Music status and basic requirements
- Check Apple’s System Status page. Look for Apple Music service issues at apple.com/support/systemstatus. Status can change, so check when the problem occurs; do not assume an outage from an old report.
- Confirm a qualifying subscription. Sync Library requires an active Apple Music or iTunes Match subscription. Availability can vary by country or region. If the Sync Library option is missing, a subscription issue or a different signed-in Apple Account may be the reason (Apple Support).
- Check the Apple Account associated with the subscription and library. The same account must be used for Apple Music on each device. Do not assume that the account used for iCloud or the App Store is necessarily the one used for the subscription. In Music on Mac, choose Account; on iPhone or iPad, open Music, tap the account button, then Account Settings; in Apple Music for Windows, click the user name at the bottom of the sidebar. See Apple’s account and sync troubleshooting.
- Verify internet access on the source computer and devices, and leave the source computer awake while it processes the library.
2. Make sure Sync Library is enabled
Check the setting on each device you want to sync. Menu labels differ between Apple Music for Windows and legacy iTunes for Windows.

Apple’s step-by-step instructions are in its Sync Library guide and Windows Music guide.
3. Manually update the cloud library from the source computer
Once the account, subscription, connection, and settings are correct, run the refresh on the computer that holds the original library. Apple recommends updating the source computer before another synced computer (Apple Support).
- Mac: In Music, choose File > Library > Update Cloud Library.
- Apple Music for Windows: Choose Sidebar Actions > Library > Update Cloud Library.
This is a non-destructive refresh, not a guarantee that every sync problem will be fixed. Leave the app open and the computer online while it runs.

4. Check whether particular tracks are holding things up
If only some songs are missing or the update repeatedly stalls, inspect the source library rather than assuming the entire account is broken. In the Songs view, show the Cloud Status and Cloud Download columns. On Mac, choose View > Show View Options; in the Windows app, right-click the column headings and enable the relevant columns. Apple describes these columns and statuses in its cloud-library troubleshooting steps.
Look for patterns: the same track or album repeatedly fails, several files show an error or remain waiting, or a track is marked unavailable. Check whether files were moved or deleted outside Music, whether there are duplicate versions, and whether the affected files have unusual formats or very large sizes. These are clues to investigate, not proof that a particular format causes the problem. Preserve the original files while troubleshooting.
Apple’s iTunes for Windows documentation describes a cloud-library limit of up to 100,000 songs, excluding iTunes Store purchases, and a 200 MB per-file limit in that documented workflow (Apple’s iTunes guide). Treat those figures as specific to the documented workflow rather than assuming they apply identically to every current app or region.
5. Troubleshoot purchased or grayed-out songs
A grayed-out song does not necessarily mean Sync Library is stuck. Apple lists several other causes: the purchase may belong to another Apple Account, the computer may not be authorized, content restrictions may be set to Clean, or the item may have been removed from the Apple Music catalog and marked No Longer Available (Apple Support).
If purchased tracks are affected, check that the computer is authorized for the account that bought them:

6. Test whether the problem is device-specific or broader
As a diagnostic check—not an official Apple test—compare the library on the source computer, another device using the same account, and music.apple.com, where a synced library can be streamed. If the library works on the web and another device, the problem may be specific to one device or app. If it fails everywhere, an account, subscription, catalog, or service issue is more plausible. If only imported tracks fail, focus on their Cloud Status and source files; if only purchases fail, check the account and computer authorization.
7. Turn Sync Library off and back on only as a later step
Try this only after confirming the subscription, account, connection, settings, and source library, and after a manual update has not helped. First verify your backup. Apple warns that turning Sync Library off removes downloaded music from devices. This affects offline downloads; it does not mean you should delete the original local audio files. Once the setting is turned back on, the visible library may change while it resynchronizes, and you may need to download offline music again.
Do not make this your first fix. Back up the source library before toggling Sync Library. Do not delete local music or rebuild the library database as a routine troubleshooting step.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to contact Apple Support
Contact Apple Support if the same error persists across devices after the account, subscription, network, and library checks; Sync Library switches itself off; the cloud library appears missing despite being present locally; a specific error code appears; or the issue began after a region, subscription, or account change. If the music is irreplaceable, retain the local files and database and ask for guidance before deleting or reconstructing anything. Keep your backup even if support is investigating; recovery of every missing item cannot be guaranteed.
Avoid treating VPN or DNS changes, cache deletion, app reinstallation, or database removal as guaranteed fixes. They do not address a service-side or account problem and can complicate access to local or downloaded music.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long should Apple Music take to update Cloud Music Library?
Apple does not specify a universal completion time. Library size, imported-file count, network conditions, and individual tracks affect progress. If the indicator is moving or items are appearing on other devices, leave the source computer awake and online; troubleshoot if there is no meaningful progress for a prolonged period.
Does turning off Sync Library delete my music?
Apple says turning it off removes downloaded music from devices. That warning concerns device downloads; preserve your local original files and library database, and do not delete them as part of the toggle.
Is Sync Library the same as iCloud Backup?
No. Sync Library makes music available across devices; Apple says Apple Music is not a backup service. Keep an independent backup of your original audio files and library database.
Why is Sync Library missing?
Apple identifies a missing qualifying Apple Music or iTunes Match subscription, or a device signed in to a different Apple Account from the one associated with the subscription, as likely causes.
Can I use Sync Library without Apple Music?
Apple says iTunes Match also provides Sync Library functionality. Without Apple Music or iTunes Match, you can still investigate manual music syncing, but that is different from Sync Library.

Should I reinstall Apple Music to fix the update message?
Not as a standard first step. Check account, subscription, network, settings, manual library update, and Cloud Status first; reinstalling does not fix a server-side or account problem.
