If your WordPress sidebar appears beneath the main content, first check whether that is the theme’s expected mobile layout. If it is also misplaced on a wide desktop screen, diagnose the affected page and recent changes before editing CSS: the cause may be cached output, plugin-generated markup, an unbalanced template element, or layout widths that no longer fit.

First determine whether the layout is actually broken

WordPress uses “sidebar” to mean a theme’s widget area; it does not guarantee that the area will appear beside the content. Some themes intentionally stack it below the content at narrower viewport widths. Compare the affected page on a wide desktop viewport and on the screen where you noticed the issue. If it moves below only at a narrower width, that may be responsive behavior rather than a fault. The breakpoint is theme-specific, so there is no universal screen width at which a sidebar should move. See the WordPress Theme Handbook’s sidebar documentation.

Use the affected pages and recent changes to narrow the cause

  • It happens on every page: Start with shared theme layout files, global CSS, recent theme or child-theme edits, and plugins that affect site-wide output.
  • It happens only on one kind of page: Compare that page with one that displays correctly. If only single posts are affected, inspect the template that serves single posts; single.php is one possible filename, not a requirement for every theme.
  • It started after a change: Review the recent theme, child-theme, stylesheet, or plugin change first. If safe, undo or temporarily revert that change and check whether the layout returns to normal.
  • It changes between desktop and mobile: Check the theme’s responsive styles and the actual viewport before changing desktop layout rules.

WordPress themes combine template files and CSS to produce a site’s appearance, and CSS controls layout. The active theme determines which templates and selectors matter, so do not assume another theme’s file names or fixes will apply. The WordPress CSS documentation describes the role of CSS and notes that Additional CSS in the Customizer has been available since WordPress 4.7; the available interface and navigation can vary by theme and admin version.

Work through the low-risk checks first

  1. Clear caches. Clear any WordPress or caching-plugin cache in use, then reload the affected page in a browser with its cache cleared. Cached output can make a change appear not to have worked.
  2. Test for plugin interference. If the issue persists, temporarily deactivate plugins and check the page again. If the layout recovers, reactivate plugins one at a time, checking after each activation to identify whether a particular plugin brings the problem back. This is a diagnostic test, not evidence that plugins generally cause sidebar problems.
  3. Inspect the affected template’s markup. If the problem is limited to a template, check its structure for an unclosed <div> or an extra </div>, either of which can disrupt the layout that follows. Use the browser’s Inspect tool to examine the rendered elements, or run the page through the W3C Markup Validation Service to identify markup errors. A validator finding is a clue to investigate, not automatic proof that the finding caused the sidebar position.
  4. Check layout widths, including spacing. Compare the widths of the page wrapper, content area, and sidebar, and account for padding and margins as well as the stated widths. If their combined occupied space exceeds the wrapper, the sidebar may be pushed onto a new line. For example, WPBeginner’s 2025 guide uses 70% content plus 33% sidebar as an illustration of widths overflowing—not as a universal threshold or a prescription for your theme.

Understand where a WordPress sidebar is assembled

In classic themes, a sidebar is a widgetized theme area. A theme commonly registers it in functions.php, renders a sidebar template through get_sidebar(), and outputs widgets in that area with dynamic_sidebar(). These are common mechanisms, not a guarantee that every theme uses the same files or structure. If you edit code, inspect the template assembling the affected page and confirm that the sidebar is rendered where the theme intends it to be. The Theme Handbook’s sidebar reference explains these functions.

Widgets and plugins can contribute HTML to a page, which can affect the rendered structure. The WordPress Theme Handbook’s widget documentation notes that when a theme or plugin is deactivated, its widget functionality may become unavailable while widget data and preferences remain stored for restoration if it is reactivated. Keep that in mind when testing plugins: record what you disable and restore the original setup after the test.

When the sidebar still appears below content

If cache clearing, plugin isolation, markup inspection, and width checks do not identify the cause, inspect available WordPress troubleshooting information and debug output for PHP or plugin errors. Debugging can surface a clue, but do not leave public error display enabled on a live site. If an error points to a plugin, test that plugin cautiously and consult its maintainer rather than replacing unrelated components.

When asking the theme or plugin maintainer for help, provide the affected page URL, the steps that reproduce the problem, whether it occurs on desktop as well as mobile, and any recent changes. That information helps distinguish a theme-specific template or breakpoint behavior from a broader layout issue.
