The WordPress message “Upload Failed to Write File to Disk” means PHP could not write an upload to disk; it does not identify which folder or setting caused the failure. Check the actual WordPress upload destination first, then verify that the PHP process can write there and to its temporary upload directory. The right ownership and permissions depend on how your host runs PHP, so avoid applying a blanket permission change such as 777.

What the error means

PHP defines “Failed to write file to disk” as UPLOAD_ERR_CANT_WRITE, error code 7. That code identifies a failed disk write during upload handling, but it does not reveal whether the problem is the final WordPress upload folder, PHP’s temporary directory, or another server-side condition. PHP’s upload error constants list “Missing a temporary folder” separately as code 6.

If you can access the site’s PHP or server logs, look for the underlying filesystem error around the time of the failed upload. Otherwise, ask your host to check the logs rather than inferring the cause from the message alone. WordPress’s upload handler reports this error when it cannot move the uploaded file.

Find the upload directory WordPress is actually using

Do not assume the destination is always wp-content/uploads. By default, WordPress uses WP_CONTENT_DIR/uploads, but the upload_path option can change it, and the UPLOADS constant overrides both the option and the default. WordPress’s wp_upload_dir() reference explains how it determines the upload directory.

  1. Check the site’s configuration for a defined UPLOADS constant.
  2. If that constant is not defined, check whether the upload_path option has been set.
  3. Confirm the resulting directory on the server. If year/month folders are enabled in WordPress’s media settings, also check the specific dated subdirectory the upload needs to use.

WordPress can return an error if it cannot create an upload directory because its parent directory is not writable. Checking only the top-level uploads folder may therefore miss a problem affecting a particular subdirectory.

Check whether PHP can write to the destination

The relevant question is whether the PHP process serving your site can write to the effective upload directory and create the required subdirectory. A directory may appear writable to your FTP or hosting-panel account while the PHP process uses a different account or group.

WordPress’s permissions guidance emphasizes that the right arrangement depends on server configuration. As the WordPress Developer Resources page puts it: “The crux of this permission issue is how your server is configured.” See Changing File Permissions and the WordPress Hosting Handbook guidance on file ownership.

  • Use your hosting panel, if it exposes the relevant information, to check which user runs PHP and how the uploads directory is owned.
  • Ask your host what ownership and access arrangement is expected for this site’s PHP setup.
  • Have the check target the configured upload path and any failing subdirectory, rather than changing permissions across the entire WordPress installation.

Do not copy a chown command or numeric permission mode from a generic guide without confirming the host’s ownership model. WordPress recommends restricting write access appropriately; making a directory world-writable with 777 is not a safe general fix. Broad write access can make serious damage possible if an attacker gains the ability to modify files. See Hardening WordPress.

Check PHP’s temporary upload directory

The final WordPress uploads directory is only one part of the process. PHP first stages incoming files in the directory configured by upload_tmp_dir; if that setting is not configured, PHP uses the system temporary directory. PHP documents that the selected temporary directory must be writable by the PHP process. If the configured directory is unavailable, PHP may fall back to the system default; when open_basedir is enabled, that default directory must also be permitted.

Ask your host to check the active PHP configuration for this website, including the temporary path PHP is using, whether that path is writable and available, and whether storage capacity is sufficient. PHP describes this behavior in Error Messages Explained.

Rule out a separate upload-size error

A size limit is a different failure from UPLOAD_ERR_CANT_WRITE. If the message or PHP error code points to an upload-size limit, compare the file size with upload_max_filesize and post_max_size. PHP requires post_max_size to be larger than upload_max_filesize; the two settings are documented in Description of Core php.ini Directives.

Changing upload limits without evidence of a size-limit error is unlikely to resolve a disk-write failure. Use the actual message, error code, or server log to distinguish the conditions.

What to give your hosting provider

If you cannot inspect the PHP process user, configuration, logs, or storage, ask your host to check the server-side details. Include the exact error, the approximate time it occurred, the file type and size, whether all uploads fail or only uploads to a particular path, and whether the problem began after a migration or permission change. Ask the provider to verify the effective WordPress upload path, PHP’s access to that destination and its needed subdirectories, the active temporary upload directory, and relevant log or storage errors.
