“Steam Auth Timeout” usually means Rust’s Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) authentication handshake did not finish. It is not, by itself, proof of a ban or a reason to reinstall immediately. On the Windows Steam edition, close Rust, wait up to 10 minutes, restart Steam, and launch Rust from the Steam Library. If the timeout returns, verify the game files, repair EAC, restart your PC and router, and check security software before considering a reinstall.
Facepunch calls this issue “EAC Authentication Timeout”. The procedure below is aimed at Rust for Windows through Steam; Rust Console Edition and Rust Mobile use different support channels.
First, identify the scope of the failure
Before changing files or security settings, test the symptom:

- One server only: try another official and community server. A server-side load, maintenance event, or configuration problem may be involved.
- Every server: prioritize Steam, EAC, firewall, antivirus, network, and local-file checks.
- Several players fail at once: treat it as a possible Steam, EAC, Rust, or server-network incident. Reinstalling during a wider outage is unlikely to help.
- It began after an update: update Steam, verify Rust, and repair EAC before downloading the entire game again.
“Steam Auth Timeout” is commonly used for several related errors. Facepunch documents EAC Disconnected, Client Integrity Violation, and Steam-not-open startup errors separately. Check the exact wording before applying a fix intended for a different failure.

Fix 1: wait, restart, and launch Rust correctly
Facepunch’s first recommendation is to close Rust and wait up to 10 minutes, which may allow EAC’s authentication state or cache to refresh. Do not repeatedly retry while the game is still open.
- Exit Rust completely.
- Exit Steam from the Steam menu, then reopen it.
- Open Library and start Rust with the normal Steam launch button.
- Do not double-click
RustClient.exein the installation folder or use a shortcut that points directly to it. - Test a second server.
Launching outside Steam can prevent EAC from loading correctly, according to Facepunch’s timeout guidance.
Fix 2: verify Rust’s installed files
- In Steam, open Library.
- Right-click Rust (or open its gear menu) and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to finish scanning and reacquiring files, then restart Steam and launch Rust from Library.
The wording can vary slightly between Steam builds. Steam notes that a message saying one or more files failed verification can be normal because some local configuration files are not meant to be replaced; let the process finish before drawing a conclusion (Steam’s verification instructions).

Use Rust’s own EAC installer rather than downloading an installer or DLL from another website.

- In Steam Library, right-click Rust.
- Select Manage → Browse local files.
- Open the
EasyAntiCheatfolder. - Click the File Explorer address bar and enter
EasyAntiCheat_EOS_Setup.exe repair. - Press Enter and approve the administrator prompt.
- Allow the brief console window to run.
- Restart Windows and launch Rust through Steam.
The space between the executable name and repair is required. Facepunch documents this exact command in its Rust EAC timeout procedure.
Fix 4: restart the PC and network equipment
- Close Rust and Steam.
- Restart the PC.
- Power-cycle the modem or router, then wait for the connection to return.
- Open Steam first and launch Rust from Library.
- Try another server.
This clears temporary state; it does not repair EAC itself. As a diagnostic, briefly test a different connection such as a phone hotspot. A hotspot can consume mobile data and produce poor latency, so use it only to determine whether the home router, ISP, DNS filtering, or network gateway is involved. Facepunch’s documented network step is to restart the PC and internet connection (source).
Fix 5: check firewall and antivirus blocking
Facepunch says EAC connects to client.easyanticheat.net over standard HTTP/HTTPS ports 80 and 443. Security software must allow that connection (EAC connectivity guidance).

- Review quarantine, blocked-application, web-shield, and controlled-folder-access logs.
- Allow Steam, Rust, and Easy Anti-Cheat through the Windows firewall when prompted.
- If you understand the risk, briefly disable only the product’s web or network shield to test. Re-enable it immediately.
- Prefer a narrow application or domain exception instead of leaving protection disabled.
Do not open arbitrary inbound ports, permanently disable antivirus, or assume that a VPN, custom DNS server, or port forwarding is a universal Rust fix.

Fix 6: remove the stale RustClient.exe.eac file
Facepunch specifically names RustClient.exe.eac. Delete only this file if it exists, then force Steam to recreate or reacquire what is needed.
- Close Rust and Steam.
- Use Rust → Manage → Browse local files in Steam.
- Open the
EasyAntiCheatfolder. - Delete
RustClient.exe.eacif present. - Reopen Steam and run Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files.
- Launch Rust from Library.
Do not delete random files from System32, the Windows registry, or unrelated EAC installations. This filename and sequence come from Facepunch’s current timeout article.
Fix 7: close applications EAC flags as forbidden
Rust can record a conflict near the bottom of output_log.txt. Facepunch advises stopping applications EAC identifies as forbidden through Task Manager.

- Close or uninstall only software you recognize and trust.
- Do not delete an unknown Windows file merely because its name appears in a log.
- A clean restart followed by launching only Steam and Rust can isolate a background conflict.
A “forbidden application” message does not automatically mean you cheated. The log on your PC is more useful than an internet list that may be outdated.

Fix 8: update Windows and Steam
Install pending Windows updates, then check Steam itself:
- Open Steam and choose Steam → Check for Steam Client Updates.
- Restart Steam if an update is installed.
- If you use Steam Beta, open Steam → Settings → Interface (the exact beta control can move between client builds) and opt out if that option is available.
- Retry Rust from the Library.
Facepunch includes Steam restart, client updates, beta opt-out, file verification, and reinstalling last in its Steam startup guidance.

Steam documents clearing the download cache as general installation and update troubleshooting, not as a Rust-specific EAC cure. Use it after restarting Steam and verifying Rust files:

- Open Steam and select Steam → Settings.
- Open Downloads.
- Choose Clear Download Cache and confirm.
- Sign in again if prompted, then verify Rust’s files once more.
Steam’s general guidance is available at this support page. The reset can require reauthentication or redownload metadata.

Fix 10: reinstall Rust only as a last resort
Facepunch places a fresh reinstall at the end of its timeout sequence (official order). It is reasonable when:
- The EAC folder repeatedly returns to a broken state.
- Verification reacquires the same files after every launch.
- A failed update damaged the installation.
- Rust fails on every server while other Steam games work.
- The game is on a drive with permissions or storage problems.
Reinstalling is unlikely to help an outage affecting many players, a single broken server, a blocked school or work network, Steam login problems, or an account restriction. It cannot remove a ban or bypass EAC enforcement.
If none of the fixes work
Use this final diagnostic checklist:
- Does another Rust server work?
- Does the game work on a different network?
- Do other Steam games connect normally?
- Is Steam showing login or content-server errors?
- Did the problem start immediately after a patch?
- Is the exact message actually “EAC Disconnected,” “Client Integrity Violation,” or “Steam not open”?
- Are other players reporting the same failure?
Rust online multiplayer cannot be treated as an offline-mode problem: Steam says games that require an active connection or an external service will not work in Offline Mode (Steam Offline Mode limitations). The Windows procedure above also does not guarantee the same paths on Linux, macOS, Steam Deck compatibility layers, or non-PC editions.

Contact Facepunch Support
If the timeout persists after local, network, and security checks, sign in at Facepunch Support with the Steam account that owns Rust. Include the exact error text, whether every server is affected, when it began, and which steps completed. A timeout alone is not evidence of an EAC ban; account-status or ban issues are handled separately.
