Hulu’s spinning wheel is a symptom, not a diagnosis: it can come from a frozen app, a network problem, browser or app data, an unsupported device, a title-specific restriction, or a temporary Hulu issue. Start by trying another title, then fully close Hulu and restart the device. If that does not help, test another network before clearing data, updating, or reinstalling the app.
First, narrow down what is failing
Before changing settings, spend a minute isolating the problem. Try another Hulu movie or episode, then test Hulu on a second device connected to the same Wi-Fi. If possible, also try another streaming service on the affected device.
- Only one title spins: The title, channel, event, or your authorization to watch it may be the issue. Test at least two other titles.
- Hulu spins on one device only: Focus on that device’s app, software, cache, or compatibility.
- Hulu fails on every device using home Wi-Fi: Investigate the router, internet service, or network settings.
- Hulu and other services both fail: The connection or device is more likely than Hulu alone.
- Hulu fails across supported devices and different networks: A Hulu-side or account problem becomes more plausible. Check the Hulu Help Center; do not infer a confirmed outage from one device’s spinner.
A spinner before the home screen loads, after selecting a program, or during playback can have different causes. A wheel that eventually shows an error may provide a useful clue, so note the exact message or code.

Try these fixes in order
- Try another title. If other programs play, avoid resetting your device or reinstalling the app immediately. Record the affected title, episode, channel, or event and when it failed.
- Fully close Hulu. Returning to the home screen may leave Hulu suspended in the background. Exit the app, open your device’s recent-apps or app-management screen, and remove or force-close Hulu. Reopen it and test again. The controls differ by platform; see Hulu’s guide to fully closing Hulu.
- Restart the device completely. Close Hulu first, then use the device’s restart option. If it has no genuine restart option, turn it off and unplug it from power briefly before reconnecting. Restart a phone or tablet rather than only locking the screen. On a computer, close the browser fully; restart the computer if reopening the browser does not help.
- Power-cycle your modem and router. This briefly disconnects everyone on the network. Close Hulu, unplug the modem and router, and wait several minutes. Reconnect the modem first and allow it to reconnect to the internet; then reconnect the separate router. Reconnect your streaming device and test Hulu. Hulu includes connection and power-cycle advice in its playback troubleshooting and internet-connection guidance.
- Test another connection. Try Hulu on a phone using cellular data or a hotspot, or connect a streaming device to Ethernet if available. If Hulu works on the alternate connection but not home Wi-Fi, investigate the home network or contact your internet provider. If playback improves closer to the router, weak Wi-Fi may be contributing.
- Clear browser cache or app cache. Instructions vary by browser and device; use the relevant settings rather than assuming every TV has the same menu. Details follow below.
- Update both Hulu and the device. Check the device’s official app store for a Hulu update, and check the TV, streamer, console, phone, tablet, or computer for system or firmware updates. Updating only one does not guarantee the other is current.
- Reinstall Hulu if it is still the only broken app. Uninstall it, restart the device, reinstall it from the platform’s official app store, sign in again, and test an on-demand title. If you use Live TV, test that too. Do not download unofficial Hulu installers or modified apps.
- Check device support. An older TV or streaming device may no longer be supported. Check Hulu’s current supported-device list and list of devices no longer supported; compatibility depends on the particular model and platform.
Clear browser or app data carefully
On a computer browser
Close Hulu tabs, open the browser’s privacy or settings menu, and clear cached files. If the spinner remains, clear Hulu’s cookies or site data as well, then restart the browser, sign in again, and test playback. Clearing only cached files may preserve more login state; clearing cookies or site data can sign you out and remove site preferences. Hulu provides browser-cache troubleshooting guidance.

A private or incognito window is a quick test. If Hulu works there, a browser extension or stored site data may be involved. Temporarily disable extensions that block ads, scripts, tracking, or content, then test again. A private window is diagnostic, not necessarily a permanent fix.
On a TV or streaming device
Some Android TV, Google TV, Fire TV, and smart-TV menus offer options such as Force stop, Clear cache, or Clear data. Menu labels and availability vary by model and software version, so follow the device maker’s instructions rather than using a universal path.

- Clear data resets the app and usually means signing in again; it may also reset local preferences.
- Reinstalling removes the app and installs a fresh copy, but not every platform allows it.
Try the least disruptive option first. Hulu’s playback troubleshooting also points users toward clearing cache and data where available.

Tell a network problem from an app problem
High download speed on a speed test does not rule out Wi-Fi interference, congestion, packet loss, unstable latency, DNS trouble, a faulty router, or a Hulu-side issue. Use comparisons rather than relying on one number:

- If all streaming services struggle, focus on the connection, router, or device.
- If Hulu works on a hotspot but not home Wi-Fi, focus on the home network or internet provider.
- If other services work but Hulu fails on one device, focus on Hulu’s app, device software, stored data, or compatibility.
- If Hulu improves over Ethernet, the Wi-Fi connection may be the weak link. Hulu’s set-top-box troubleshooting also describes wired connections as a useful option: Hulu connection troubleshooting.
As a targeted test, temporarily disable a VPN or proxy and try again. Also test without browser ad blockers, privacy tools, script blockers, or network content filters. VPNs are not automatically the cause, and you need not leave a privacy tool off permanently. Work, school, hotel, and public networks may restrict streaming traffic.
When the spinner affects Live TV or one program
If on-demand shows work but Live TV, a local channel, or a sports event does not, ordinary buffering may not be the issue. Hulu + Live TV availability can depend on regional availability, blackouts, location requirements, device restrictions, subscription terms, and whether your plan authorizes the content. Check the relevant details on Hulu’s Live TV page. Do not repeatedly change your home location as a generic troubleshooting step; it can create account or location problems.

If just one title fails, try other titles and note the exact program, season, episode, channel, or event and the time of the failure. That information can help distinguish a title or channel issue from a problem with the app or connection.

When to contact Hulu
Contact Hulu through its Help Center if the spinner persists after the basic checks, especially if Hulu fails on more than one supported device or network. Before you contact support, gather:

- Getting set up is easy – Plug in and connect to Wi-Fi for smooth streaming.
- Device brand and model, plus its operating-system or firmware version.
- Hulu app version, if visible; for a browser, its name and version.
- Whether one title or all Hulu content fails, and whether other streaming services work.
- Whether Hulu fails on another device or another network.
- The exact error message or code, if one appears.
- Whether you are using Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or cellular data, and roughly when the problem began.
You probably do not need to buy anything to diagnose a spinner. Test another network or Ethernet before considering replacement hardware. Avoid factory-resetting a TV or router as a routine Hulu fix; it is disruptive and is not warranted before ordinary troubleshooting or support.
