The Spotify “Something went wrong” message is generic: it can point to a service outage, a network restriction, or a problem with the app, browser, or device. Check Spotify’s status first, then try the low-risk fixes—restart, update, and test another network—before clearing data or reinstalling. Reinstalling can remove downloaded music and podcasts.
First, check whether Spotify is having an outage
Before changing settings, check Spotify’s @SpotifyStatus account and the Spotify Community Ongoing Issues board. Spotify recommends these sources for known problems. An outage can make Home, Search, or the Web Player fail even when your internet connection works.

Compare Spotify on the mobile app, desktop app, and Web Player, if available, and try another device or internet connection. Reports from other users can be useful clues, but third-party outage trackers do not prove Spotify is the cause. Historical incident reports, such as a June 2026 Spotify Community incident, are examples of similar symptoms—not evidence of a current outage.
Use the symptom pattern to narrow it down
| What you observe | Best next check |
|---|---|
| Spotify fails on several devices and networks | Check Spotify’s status and Community incident reports; an outage or account-level issue is more plausible. |
| Spotify fails only on one Wi-Fi network | Try cellular data or another Wi-Fi network. If that works, investigate router, filtering, firewall, proxy, or ISP restrictions. |
| The Web Player works but the desktop app fails | Update or restart the app, then check app cache, proxy settings, and firewall access. |
| The app works but the Web Player fails in one browser | Test a private window, site data, extensions, browser updates, or another browser. |
| Spotify works on another device but not this one | Focus on the affected device’s app, operating system, storage, or local settings. |
| Home or Search fails but music still plays | Check service status, then restart the app and test whether the same pages fail on another client. |
| The problem began after traveling | Review the account’s country or region settings and Spotify’s travel guidance. |
Try low-risk fixes first
- Close Spotify completely and reopen it. If that does not help, restart your phone or computer.
- Install available updates. Update Spotify and, where relevant, your browser and device operating system.
- Close unused apps. Then test Spotify again; Spotify includes restarting, updating, and closing unused apps among its troubleshooting steps.
- Check whether other apps and websites work. If they do not, resolve the broader connection problem before changing Spotify.
These are Spotify’s own first-line recommendations in its troubleshooting guide. Do not reinstall yet: it is more disruptive and will require downloaded content to be downloaded again.

Check Offline Mode and your connection
Turn off Offline Mode
- iPhone, iPad, and Android: Tap your profile picture, then Settings and privacy → Data-saving and offline. Make sure Offline mode is off.
- Mac: Open Spotify and check the Spotify menu in the macOS menu bar.
- Windows: Open Spotify’s three-dot menu, choose File, and check whether Offline Mode is enabled.
Spotify’s Offline Mode instructions note that content that is not downloaded is unavailable while offline. They also say you cannot sign in with Facebook or Apple while the app is offline; use an email address and password instead if appropriate.
Switch networks to isolate the cause
- Turn Wi-Fi off on your phone and test using cellular data, or connect the computer to a phone hotspot.
- Try another Wi-Fi network if one is available.
- If Spotify works on the alternate connection, focus on the original network rather than reinstalling the app. Public, school, workplace, hotel, or guest networks may restrict Spotify.
- If other apps and websites also fail, restart the router and test again. If only Spotify is blocked on a managed network, ask its administrator or your ISP about filtering.
Spotify recommends checking other apps and webpages, restarting Wi-Fi or the router, trying another network or cellular connection, and checking for restrictions in its connection guidance.

If the error is in the Web Player
- Reload the page, then open Spotify in a private or incognito window.
- If Spotify works in private mode, clear Spotify’s site data and cookies in your normal browser. The private-window result points toward saved browser state, permissions, or an extension; it does not by itself identify which one.
- Temporarily disable extensions that can filter pages or scripts, such as ad blockers, privacy tools, and script blockers. Test Spotify, then re-enable extensions one at a time.
- Update the browser and try another browser.
- Temporarily test with VPN or proxy software off, one item at a time. Turn security protections back on after the test.
A Spotify Community moderator response recommends these browser, extension, VPN, and proxy checks as troubleshooting options. They are diagnostic steps, not guaranteed fixes.
Clear cache before deleting app data
Cache clearing removes temporary files and may help with stale local data, but it cannot fix an outage or guarantee that every loading problem will disappear. Menu names can vary by operating system and Spotify version.

- Perfect for App Store purchases and subscriptions—get apps, games, music, movies, TV shows, and more.

- iPhone and iPad: In Spotify, open Settings and privacy → Data-saving and offline → Storage, then tap Clear beside Clear cache.
- Android: Open device Settings → Apps → Spotify → Storage or Storage & cache, then tap Clear cache. Avoid Clear storage for this first attempt; it is more destructive.
Spotify documents these controls in its reinstallation and cache instructions. It does not provide one universal desktop cache path in that guidance, so do not delete desktop files based on an unverified path.
Log out and back in when the app partly works
Signing out and back in can help when Spotify works on another device, pages load inconsistently, or the problem began after an account or password change. A stale session is one possibility, not a certain diagnosis.

Clean-reinstall Spotify only if simpler fixes fail
Before uninstalling: Spotify says downloaded music and podcasts must be downloaded again after reinstalling. Downloads also require going online at least once every 30 days; Premium is required for music downloads, while the free version supports podcast downloads. See Spotify’s offline listening guidance. If bandwidth is limited, you are traveling, or you cannot confirm your login details, postpone a reinstall.

iPhone and iPad
- In Spotify, open Settings and privacy → Data-saving and offline.
- Under Storage, tap Clear beside Clear cache.
- On the device, open Settings → General → iPhone Storage or iPad Storage, select Spotify, and tap Delete App.
- Power the device off completely, wait a few minutes, then turn it back on.
- Install Spotify again from the App Store and sign in.
Android 6.0 and newer
- Open device Settings → Apps → Spotify → Storage or Storage & cache.
- Tap Clear storage and Clear cache, then return to the app screen and uninstall Spotify.
- In a file manager, if accessible, delete
Internal Storage/Android/data/com.spotify.music. If you use an SD card, Spotify also lists the correspondingcom.spotify.musicfolder there. - Restart the device, reinstall Spotify from Google Play or the device’s native app store, and sign in.
Android manufacturers and versions vary. Newer Android versions may restrict access to application folders; if your file manager cannot open the listed path, skip manual deletion and continue with the restart and reinstall. Spotify documents the platform steps in its reinstall guide.
Mac
- Quit Spotify.
- Open Finder, choose Go, and hold Option/Alt to reveal Library.
- Open Caches and delete
com.spotify.clientandcom.spotify.client.helper. - Return to Library, open Application Support, and delete the Spotify folder.
- Restart the Mac, then download and reinstall Spotify.
Deleting Application Support data can remove local settings and downloads. These are Spotify’s documented Mac steps in the reinstall guide.
Windows 10 and newer
- Close Spotify and open Start → Settings → Apps → Apps & Features.
- Select Spotify and click Uninstall, then complete the prompts.
- Reinstall either through the Microsoft Store or directly from Spotify.
The Microsoft Store and direct-download editions can store data differently. Spotify’s documented Windows route is an uninstall and reinstall; avoid unverified registry edits or manual AppData deletion. See the Spotify reinstall guide.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check less obvious causes
- Travel or country settings: Spotify says that after more than 14 days abroad, a user may be unable to play anything and may need to change account settings. This is an account- and travel-dependent case, not a general explanation for the error. Review Spotify’s troubleshooting guidance and account settings; track availability can also vary by market. A VPN is not the proper way to bypass regional restrictions.
- Firewall, proxy, or VPN: A firewall may block Spotify, and work or school security tools may filter it. A VPN can change routing, DNS, or the apparent country; a misconfigured proxy can block Spotify even when other internet access works. Test one setting at a time and restore protections after testing. Spotify advises checking desktop firewall access in its support article; proxy and VPN checks are also discussed in the Community moderator guidance.
- Device resources or compatibility: Spotify recommends using a supported, up-to-date device, checking available memory, having sufficient battery, and ensuring that a desktop firewall is not blocking the app. Its published checklist mentions at least 250 MB of available memory; treat that as Spotify’s stated check, not a universal performance threshold across every platform. Check the Spotify troubleshooting page for the current compatibility guidance.
- Android SD card: Spotify lists an SD card as a possible source of problems. If Spotify is installed or stores content on one, test without the card only if your device allows it safely.
- Account or login issue: If browsing works but sign-in does not, confirm that Offline Mode is off and that you can authenticate with the account method you use. If the same account fails across devices, account or regional settings deserve attention.
When to contact Spotify
Contact Spotify Support or post in the Spotify Community if the problem survives a clean reinstall, occurs on multiple devices and networks, or appears tied to login or country settings. Include the exact error text, device and operating-system version, Spotify app or browser version, whether the Web Player works, networks tested, and the steps already tried. If an incident is active, report details there rather than repeatedly reinstalling.
