“Failed to Load Content” is a symptom, not one universal Roku error. The cause may be one unavailable title, a Roku Channel outage, weak or congested internet, a damaged app state, outdated Roku software, low storage, or an account and subscription restriction. Start by trying another title and another app; then work through network checks, restarts, updates, and reinstalling. A factory reset should be the last resort.
Identify which failure you have

These instructions concern The Roku Channel, Roku’s own streaming service. Roku also calls third-party apps “channels”; the same restart and update techniques generally apply, but subscription and content problems must be handled by the affected provider.
Fast, low-risk checks
- Try another title. If only one title fails, wait and try it later, check whether it is included in your plan and available in your country, and test it at TheRokuChannel.com or another supported device.
- Try another app. If Netflix or another installed service plays normally while The Roku Channel does not, the problem is probably app- or service-specific. If several apps fail, investigate the network or Roku itself.
- Close and reopen The Roku Channel. Return to Home, highlight the app again, and launch it. This does not clear your account or settings.

Check the Roku connection
- Press Home.
- Open Settings > Network > About to view connection details.
- If disconnected, choose Set up connection and reconnect to Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
- Choose Check connection, then retry the app.
A successful connection test does not prove that The Roku Channel is healthy, so continue with the app steps if other services work. If other household devices also struggle, pause downloads, cloud backups, video calls, game updates, and extra streams. Available capacity can fall when many devices share the connection; there is no single internet-speed number that guarantees every title will play.

Restart the Roku
A system restart keeps installed apps, account information, and settings.
- On many Roku TVs, use Home > Settings > System > Power > System restart.
- On some Roku players, use Home > Settings > System > System restart. If Power is absent, use the second path.
Labels vary by model and Roku software. If the menus are frozen, unplug the Roku from power, wait at least 10 seconds, plug it directly into an outlet, and allow it to boot. Pressing a television’s power button is not always the same as restarting the Roku operating system. Roku documents these methods on its system-restart page.
Restart the modem and router
- Unplug the Roku, modem, and router (do not press the router’s factory-reset button).
- Wait roughly 10–15 seconds.
- Power the modem first and wait for it to reconnect.
- Power the router, wait for Wi-Fi to return, then reconnect or wake the Roku.
For placement, Ethernet (if your model supports it) can distinguish a Wi-Fi fault from a broader connection problem. A 5 GHz network may be faster and less congested but has shorter range, model limitations, and possible DFS-channel compatibility issues; it is not universally better. Update the app and Roku software
Update The Roku Channel
- From Home, highlight The Roku Channel.
- Press the remote’s Star (*) button.
- Select Check for updates, wait for completion, and reopen the app.
Update Roku OS
- Open Home > Settings > System > Software update.
- Select Check now.
Roku devices check periodically (Roku describes an approximately 24–36-hour cycle), but a manual check helps after a long disconnection or recent app installation. Software labels and builds change, so do not rely on a fixed version number. See Roku’s software-update instructions.
Remove and reinstall The Roku Channel
Use this after restarting and updating when the app alone crashes, opens to a blank or black screen, or remains broken while other apps work.
- Highlight The Roku Channel on Home and press Star (*).
- Select Remove app or Remove channel (both labels are used), then confirm.
- Restart the Roku.
- Open the Roku Streaming Store, reinstall The Roku Channel, and sign in again if requested.
Removal can clear local sign-in state, but it does not automatically cancel a Roku Pay subscription. Manage billing separately at my.roku.com/subscriptions. Roku’s app guidance is at Fix problems using features in a streaming app.

Resolve “Can’t run app” and storage problems
For “Can’t run app,” “Not enough memory,” or “Insufficient memory,” restart first, remove several unused apps, restart again, and retry. Roku says removing installed apps can free storage; only some models support a microSD card, so do not assume your device has a slot. If the message continues, repeat the network check because an app may also fail while connecting. Follow Roku’s memory and app-error guidance.

If multiple apps are affected or the network configuration changed, use Home > Settings > Advanced system settings > Network connection reset > Reset connection. You must enter the Wi-Fi details again. This is not a factory reset and does not erase the entire Roku setup.
Check account, subscription, and availability
- Confirm the Roku is linked to the expected Roku account and that the correct profile is selected.
- Verify that the subscription or add-on is active and that the title is included in the plan.
- Check country or regional availability and parental or profile restrictions.
- Determine whether billing is through Roku Pay or directly through the provider.
If a title is visible but says unavailable or unauthorized, local resets cannot grant access. If an app or subscription has disappeared, possible explanations include a different Roku account, a provider ending support, an app being removed, or a service merger; see Roku’s subscription explanation.

Test another network or device
Connect the Roku briefly to a phone hotspot, or test The Roku Channel in a browser or on another supported device. A hotspot can incur data charges or throttling, so use it only for diagnosis.
- Works on the hotspot: home Wi-Fi, router settings, ISP service, DNS, or congestion is implicated.
- Fails on home Wi-Fi and hotspot but works elsewhere: Roku software or the app state is more likely.
- Fails everywhere: suspect the title, account, regional availability, or a service-side interruption.

Suspected outage or provider failure
Try several titles, another app, and TheRokuChannel.com. If many users or devices are affected, check Roku’s official support channels and the relevant provider’s status page. Do not repeatedly reinstall during a confirmed outage: local troubleshooting cannot repair a server-side problem.

Factory reset: last resort only
Use a factory reset only after the preceding tests, especially when the Roku fails across apps and networks. Save your Roku account email and password, Wi-Fi credentials, service logins, and subscription information first.
- Open Settings > System > Advanced system settings > Factory reset.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
This erases device settings and requires complete setup and sign-in again. It is very different from a system restart (settings retained) or a network connection reset (saved network removed). Roku describes factory reset as a last-resort network measure.
When to contact support
Contact Roku Support when multiple apps fail, the device cannot connect to any network, the Roku remains frozen after restart, the Streaming Store will not open, or activation and account linking fail. Contact The Roku Channel or the specific content provider when only that service remains broken after local troubleshooting, a particular title fails across devices, or subscription and authorization are at issue.
Do you need new hardware?
Usually not. One failed title, a suspected outage, or a pending update/reinstall does not justify buying a Roku or router. Consider network help only when multiple household devices and apps have persistent problems; consider a replacement Roku when the device is old and fails across networks and apps after troubleshooting. Avoid VPNs, unofficial activation services, and paid “Roku repair” downloads that claim to unlock unavailable content.
The Bottom Line
Test another title and app first, then check the connection, restart the Roku and router, update both app and system, and reinstall The Roku Channel if necessary. Check account and regional access before escalating. Reserve a factory reset—and hardware purchases—for failures that persist across apps, networks, and devices.
