If GeForce Experience—or the newer NVIDIA App—reports Download failed or Installation failed, the quickest reliable fix is usually to bypass the app: download the exact driver from NVIDIA, close conflicting software, run the installer as administrator, choose Custom (Advanced), select Perform a clean installation, and restart Windows.

First determine which component failed. A driver can install correctly even when NVIDIA App does not, and a failed download has different causes from a failed installation.

Identify what actually failed

Symptom Best first move
Download never starts or stops early Restart, finish Windows Update, check VPN or proxy behavior, then download the driver manually.
The driver downloads but installation fails Close background utilities, run the installer as administrator, and use a Custom clean installation.
The display driver works but NVIDIA App fails Repair or reset NVIDIA App, then reinstall the app separately.
Black screen, crashes, or Device Manager Code 43 Roll back or reinstall the driver and consider the computer manufacturer’s driver.

Check whether the NVIDIA Control Panel opens and whether Device Manager > Display adapters lists the GPU normally. Note whether the problem started after a Windows update, GPU replacement, rollback, or migration from GeForce Experience.

GeForce Experience is becoming NVIDIA App

Many users still call the software GeForce Experience, but NVIDIA released NVIDIA App as its successor, incorporating major GeForce Experience and RTX Experience features. Interface labels differ between legacy GeForce Experience, NVIDIA App, a full driver package, and laptop software supplied by Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer, MSI, or another manufacturer. NVIDIA is directing remaining legacy users to upgrade and warns that critical GeForce Experience web servers will be switched off: NVIDIA’s migration notice. The app was officially launched as the unified companion in November 2024: NVIDIA App features and download information.

The fastest fix: manually install the driver

This separates the display-driver installation from the app’s download mechanism. Use NVIDIA’s official driver-download page; do not use third-party driver-updater sites.

  1. Open the NVIDIA driver page and select the product type, product series, exact GPU model, Windows version, and driver branch.
  2. Choose Game Ready Driver for a gaming-focused system or Studio Driver when supported creative applications and their stability are the priority. For a laptop, try the OEM package first if the generic package causes hybrid-graphics, sleep, brightness, power, or external-display problems.
  3. Download the installer completely. If the NVIDIA website download itself repeatedly fails, try another browser or network and temporarily remove a VPN or proxy from the path.
  4. Save work and close browsers, games, video players, monitoring tools, overclocking utilities, RGB-control software, and other 3D applications. Examples include MSI Afterburner and similar GPU-tuning tools.
  5. Right-click the downloaded file and select Run as administrator. Accept the default temporary extraction folder unless you have a specific reason to change it.
  6. When offered, select NVIDIA Graphics Driver and NVIDIA App for the full package, or install only the driver if you want to keep the companion app separate.
  7. Choose Custom (Advanced), enable Perform a clean installation, and complete setup.
  8. Restart Windows even if the installer does not require it. NVIDIA’s complete procedure is documented at its manual clean-install guide.

A clean installation replaces relevant NVIDIA display-driver components and can reset driver settings and profiles. It is not a repair for a broken network, damaged Windows installation, incompatible hardware, or a defective GPU.

Finish Windows Update before retrying

NVIDIA says an installation can fail while Windows Update is working in the background. Open Settings > Windows Update, allow pending updates to finish, restart if requested, and check again for a pending restart. Retry the NVIDIA installer only when Windows Update is idle. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance also covers update failures, permissions, corrupted files, and driver problems: Windows Update troubleshooting.

A restart can release a locked installer file, finish a driver transaction, stop a stuck NVIDIA Container process, or complete an earlier update. Microsoft lists restarting as an initial remedy for some blocked installation and removal operations: installation and removal troubleshooting.

Remove software conflicts safely

If the standalone installer still fails, reboot and retry with nonessential programs closed. NVIDIA specifically identifies GPU-monitoring and tuning utilities, browsers, video players, 3D applications, and aggressive third-party antivirus or anti-malware monitoring as possible interference sources.

  • Exit overclocking and monitoring tools.
  • Close RGB-control utilities, media players, games, and browsers.
  • If necessary, temporarily pause a third-party antivirus product’s real-time monitoring for this single test.
  • Leave Microsoft Defender enabled unless NVIDIA or Microsoft support gives a specific reason not to.
  • Restore any paused protection immediately after the test.

Do not permanently disable antivirus, firewall, Windows security features, or driver-signature protections.

Repair NVIDIA App separately

If Device Manager shows a working GPU and the display driver installed, do not repeatedly purge the driver just because the companion app failed.

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Select NVIDIA App, open Advanced options, and choose Repair.
  3. If Repair does not help, choose Reset, restart Windows, and test again.
  4. Download the current app from NVIDIA’s official NVIDIA App page and reinstall it.

Windows provides Repair and Reset only for supported applications. If the NVIDIA installer itself remains broken, NVIDIA’s escalation path is to uninstall NVIDIA programs through Windows Control Panel, reboot, and try again: NVIDIA installer troubleshooting.

Use a clean boot when normal startup is the cause

A clean boot is justified when the driver installs in a minimal environment but not normal Windows, the failure began after installing monitoring, security, RGB, virtualization, or tuning software, or the installer stops at the same stage without a useful code. Follow Microsoft’s documented clean-boot procedure through Windows Update troubleshooting; do not randomly disable services. Record what you change and restore normal startup afterward.

Check Device Manager and roll back a bad driver

  1. Open Device Manager and expand Display adapters.
  2. Open the NVIDIA GPU’s Properties and read Device status, including any error code.
  3. If the issue started with a recent update, use Driver > Roll Back Driver when available. NVIDIA App may also offer rollback, depending on the installed app and driver state.
  4. If the display remains unusable, use Windows Recovery or the manufacturer’s recovery instructions, then install the previous known-good package.

Code 43 does not prove that the GPU is dead. Microsoft describes it as the device reporting that it is not working properly; causes can include driver software or hardware: Microsoft’s Code 43 guidance.

Laptops often combine Intel or AMD integrated graphics with NVIDIA graphics. If failures involve sleep/wake, brightness, battery behavior, hybrid switching, or external displays, prioritize the laptop maker’s customized driver. Select the exact GPU and operating system on NVIDIA’s page rather than assuming the newest package supports every legacy model.

Escalate by uninstalling NVIDIA software

Use this only after the manual clean installation, restart, conflict check, and app repair have failed. Uninstall NVIDIA programs through Windows’ installed-apps or Control Panel interface, restart, and retry the known-correct driver package. This is more disruptive than repairing the app and may remove settings, so it should not be the opening step.

Collect NVIDIA installer logs instead of guessing

Persistent failures involving permissions or the Windows Driver Store need evidence. NVIDIA provides official files and instructions to enable installer logging:

  1. Open NVIDIA’s installer-logging article.
  2. Download logging-enablement files only from NVIDIA’s domain.
  3. Enable logging and repeat the failed installation.
  4. Disable logging afterward and provide the resulting logs to NVIDIA, Microsoft, or the computer manufacturer.

The guidance references unreadable or corrupted files in C:WindowsSystem32DriverStoreFileRepository and operating-system-drive permission problems. Do not delete Driver Store folders or broadly change permissions manually; doing so can damage other hardware drivers and Windows servicing.

Decision tree for the common cases

Download fails immediately

  1. Restart the PC.
  2. Complete Windows Update and any required restart.
  3. Retry without a VPN or proxy, if applicable.
  4. Download manually from NVIDIA.
  5. Test another browser or network if the website transfer itself is incomplete.

The package downloads but installation fails

  1. Close background applications and GPU utilities.
  2. Run the installer as administrator.
  3. Select Custom (Advanced) and Perform a clean installation.
  4. Restart and verify Windows Update is idle.
  5. Try a clean boot, then uninstall NVIDIA software and retry if necessary.
  6. Enable installer logging before escalating.

The driver works but NVIDIA App fails

  1. Confirm the GPU is normal in Device Manager.
  2. Repair, then Reset, NVIDIA App.
  3. Restart and reinstall NVIDIA App separately.
  4. Use NVIDIA’s installer troubleshooting and logs if the app still fails.

A new driver causes black screens, crashes, or Code 43

  1. Restart.
  2. Roll back through Device Manager or NVIDIA App when available.
  3. Install the previous known-good driver.
  4. Use Windows Recovery or OEM recovery if the display remains unusable.
  5. Contact the GPU or computer manufacturer if multiple clean installs fail.

Windows 10 support context in 2026

Microsoft support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. A Windows 10 installation may continue to run, but it no longer receives Microsoft’s normal free software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes. That date is a compatibility and security consideration, not proof that upgrading Windows will fix every NVIDIA error. Treat Windows 11 compatibility, the exact GPU, and the laptop or OEM configuration separately.

When to contact support

  • The exact NVIDIA package fails repeatedly after a restart, idle Windows Update, closed background software, and a clean installation.
  • Logs point to Driver Store corruption or operating-system-drive permissions.
  • Black screens or Code 43 return across several known-good driver versions.
  • A laptop requires a vendor-specific graphics package.
  • The driver works but NVIDIA App continues to fail after Repair, Reset, and a separate reinstall.

Have the exact GPU and Windows edition, the installer version, the failure message, Device Manager status, and NVIDIA installer logs ready for support.
