There is no supported setting that permanently disables Netflix Household checks. If you’re at the account’s main home, connect the device to that home’s preferred internet connection and update the Household. If you’re away temporarily, use Netflix’s travel verification. If you live elsewhere, the supported options are an eligible Extra Member slot or a separate account.
What the Netflix Household message means
Messages such as “Your TV isn’t part of the Netflix Household for this account” mean Netflix could not associate the device with the account’s designated Household. Netflix defines a Household as the devices connected to the internet at the main place where the account is watched. The service may ask for verification when a device uses a different network, ISP account, or external IP address; Netflix does not publish the full detection method. Netflix’s Household guidance explains how the association works.

The warning alone does not mean the account is canceled, hacked, or over its device limit. Netflix says it does not cap the total number of devices used with an account, although the plan limits how many screens can watch at the same time. Netflix’s device guidance distinguishes device access from simultaneous viewing.

Use the internet connection the account owner intends to designate as the main home connection—ideally the preferred or most-used connection. If the TV is on guest Wi-Fi, a different ISP, or a separate home network, switch it first. Then update the Household from the TV or streaming device:

- Open Netflix and go to its home screen.
- Press Back on the remote. On Apple TV, press Menu.
- Open Get Help or Settings, then choose Manage Netflix Household.
- Select Update Netflix Household.
- Choose Send Email or, if offered, Send Text.
- Open the verification link sent to the account owner and select Yes, This Was Me, then Confirm Update.
- Wait for Netflix on the TV to refresh.
The verification link expires after 15 minutes. Labels and menu placement can vary by TV, app version, and language. Netflix’s current Household update instructions cover the supported menu path.
If “Manage Netflix Household” is missing
- Try another TV or supported streaming device on the preferred home network; the option may not appear on every device.
- Update the Netflix app and the device’s system software, then check again.
- Review the account’s active devices and sign out of unfamiliar ones before repeating the update.
- If needed, sign out of all devices and run the Household update again from the intended home connection.
If the account is not used on a TV or TV streaming device, Netflix says a Household may not need to be established. See Netflix’s Household instructions.
Fix the message on a phone or computer
Connect the phone or computer to the same Wi-Fi network used by a TV or streaming device associated with the Household. Restart the Netflix app or refresh the browser. If the message remains, update the Household from the home TV using the steps above. Netflix also provides device-verification and account-recovery options for cases where a Household TV is unavailable. Netflix’s household-error guidance describes those options.

Watch Netflix temporarily while traveling
For a hotel, rental, friend’s home, or other temporary location, use Netflix’s temporary verification rather than changing the Household to the travel location. Use a non-Kids profile to request access.
On a TV or TV streaming device
- Sign in to Netflix and select I’m Traveling.
- Choose Send Email or Send Text.
- Ask the account owner to retrieve the four-digit code from the message Netflix sends.
- Enter the code on the TV and select Next.
On a phone or computer
- Select Watch Temporarily.
- Request the code by email or text, then enter it in the app or browser.
- Select Submit Code, then Continue to Netflix.
Temporary codes expire after 15 minutes, and Netflix may stop offering the option when a device reaches its request limit. Netflix recommends opening the app on the Household’s Wi-Fi at least once a month when using the service away from home. These are temporary-access measures, not a permanent arrangement for sharing between two homes. Netflix’s travel verification instructions explain the code process; its account-sharing guidance covers options for people outside the Household.
If the verification code fails or never arrives
Missing email or text
- Check spam, junk, promotions, and filtered folders.
- Select Send Again and confirm the account’s email address or phone number is current.
- Ask the account owner to retrieve the code directly. If you cannot reach someone with access to the account contact details, you may not be able to complete verification yourself.
Changing the account email or phone number affects other people using the account. If the owner does not recognize the request, review signed-in devices, sign out unfamiliar devices, and change the password. Treat a code like an account credential: do not share it with unknown people or approve an unexpected request. Netflix’s guidance for household errors includes these recovery and security steps.

Expired or incorrect code
Request a new code if the first has expired. An incorrect code can be tried again, but after several unsuccessful attempts Netflix may block that TV or device for 24 hours. The screen may offer Join Now, Sign Out, or an option to try later. Temporary-code requests also have a device limit, so repeated requests are not guaranteed. Netflix documents these code limits and failure states.
When the person lives outside the Household
Travel verification is intended for temporary access, not routine viewing from a separate residence. The official choices are an Extra Member slot, if eligible, or a separate Netflix account. Netflix says an account owner can invite an Extra Member; that person gets a separate login and password. Availability depends on country, plan, and billing arrangement. Extra Members are not available on ad-supported plans, and some provider-billed or package accounts are ineligible. Activation must take place in the same country where the owner created the membership. Netflix’s Extra Member rules and provider-package guidance detail the qualifications.
An Extra Member account has one profile and cannot add more profiles. A separate account is the alternative when a slot is unavailable or unsuitable. Netflix’s profile transfer feature can preserve viewing history, recommendations, My List, saved games, and settings when moving to an eligible account. If Netflix keeps blocking a device that belongs at home
Check the network and account before repeating the Household update. A device can appear to be outside the Household if it is on guest Wi-Fi, a separate ISP, or a different external IP address. A household with multiple Wi-Fi networks may have only one associated with Netflix. Recent use at a hotel or rental, a router or ISP change, an outdated app, or the wrong Netflix account signed in can also contribute to the problem; Netflix’s published guidance does not establish that any one cause applies in every case.
- Put the main TV and affected device on the preferred home connection, rather than a guest network or hotspot.
- Verify that the correct Netflix account is signed in.
- Update the TV app and device software.
- Sign out unfamiliar devices, then update the Household from the intended home network—not from a temporary location.
For an Apple TV that is blocked, Netflix notes that the usual Troubleshoot this TV option may not appear; use a mobile-device check-in or update the Household instead. Netflix’s device-specific troubleshooting covers this exception, and its Household help page covers network association.

If you moved or changed internet providers
Moving within the same country
Update the Household from the new primary home connection. In the United States and Canada, Netflix says billing information may also need to be updated to reflect the correct tax rate. Netflix’s moving guidance explains the steps.

Moving to another country
Netflix generally requires canceling the existing membership and signing up again in the new country. Pricing, billing currency, payment methods, content availability, and some account settings can differ by country. Netflix says viewing activity is retained for 24 months after account closure so it can be available if the member rejoins. Follow Netflix’s international-move instructions.
Provider-billed Netflix
If Netflix comes through a phone, broadband, cable, or other package, do not assume the direct-billing rules apply. Providers can control available plans and prices; an Extra Member may require a secondary payment method, and a package change can affect existing Extra Members. Check the Netflix account page and the provider’s terms. Netflix’s Verizon package documentation illustrates how provider arrangements can differ.
Why VPNs and Wi-Fi “loopholes” are not a reliable fix
A VPN, DNS change, hotspot, or randomly selected network does not authorize someone as part of the account’s Household or create an Extra Member relationship. A VPN may change the apparent network location, but it can also cause separate playback, catalog, or verification issues; Netflix does not document VPN use as a Household remedy. Use the actual home connection for a legitimate Household update, temporary travel verification when away, or an eligible Extra Member or separate account for a different residence.

Contact Netflix if the supported steps fail, especially if the account email or phone is inaccessible, the Household was updated from the wrong location, the device remains blocked after verification, a provider bundle controls the subscription, or you see activity the owner does not recognize. For a security concern, sign out unfamiliar devices and change the password before sharing further verification codes.
