“Software Update Failed” is a generic alert, not a diagnosis. The failure may involve an incompatible iPhone, insufficient storage, interrupted Wi‑Fi, Apple’s update servers, a damaged download, outdated computer software, a USB connection, or hardware. Work through the low-risk steps below in order, then use Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes before considering recovery mode.
This guide uses the iOS 17-era wording, but in 2026 your iPhone may offer a newer compatible release. Follow the same process for the version currently shown at Settings > General > Software Update.
First, identify where the update stopped
Note the exact message, any numbered error, and the stage at which the process failed. “Unable to Check for Update,” a download failure, a verification failure, an installation failure, a frozen Apple logo, and a computer error can have different causes.

- Download finishes but installation fails: restart, remove the downloaded update, and try again or use a computer.
- Apple logo or progress bar remains: wait if the bar is still moving; use recovery mode only when the phone is genuinely stuck or unrecognized.
- Computer shows a number: use the error-code table below to focus on network, USB, software, or lock-state checks.
Before deleting an update, connecting a computer, or entering recovery mode, make a backup if the iPhone is usable.

1. Confirm compatibility and make a backup
Check the iPhone model
Apple requires a device that supports the software version. Compare your model with Apple’s compatibility information and do not attempt to force an unsupported iOS release. If Software Update offers a later compatible version, install the version Apple currently presents rather than trying to obtain an older build. Apple lists compatibility and common update causes in its troubleshooting guide: If your iPhone or iPad won’t update.
Back up before escalation
Use iCloud or a computer backup before troubleshooting. A normal update is designed to preserve data and settings, but Restore is different: it reinstalls iOS and erases the iPhone. Do not choose Restore in recovery mode unless you understand that consequence or have a usable backup. See Apple’s recovery guidance at If you can’t update or restore your iPhone.
2. Prepare a reliable wireless update
- Connect the iPhone to power.
- Join a dependable Wi‑Fi network; avoid switching networks during the download.
- Open Settings > General > Software Update.
- Choose Download and Install or Install Now, depending on the label displayed.
A weak, congested, hotel, school, workplace, or captive-portal network can interrupt an update. Temporarily disconnect a VPN or proxy if it prevents contact with Apple’s servers, then restore your protection afterward. Free space safely
Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Review large apps, videos, downloads, and other replaceable content. Back up photos and files before deleting them; offload unused apps where appropriate. Apple does not specify one universal free-space number because the requirement varies by device and update. iPhone may temporarily remove apps that can be downloaded again and reinstall them after the update.

Delete the downloaded package
If an update entry appears in iPhone Storage, select [iOS update] > Delete Update, restart the iPhone, reconnect to power and Wi‑Fi, and retry. The entry may not appear when no package remains, and its label can vary by iOS version. Deleting it removes the downloaded package; it does not erase personal data or downgrade iOS. Apple recommends this step when verification or update-server errors persist across networks: Apple’s update troubleshooting steps.
4. Restart, then try another network
If the phone is responsive, cancel the failed attempt and restart it normally. A restart clears temporary state but cannot fix an unsupported model, a blocked server connection, or a hardware fault. After restarting, reconnect power and Wi‑Fi and return to Settings > General > Software Update.
If the same error returns, use another trusted connection, such as home broadband instead of a work or school network. A personal hotspot can help isolate a local network problem where supported, but large downloads may be slow or consume cellular data. Apple recommends another network when update-server errors continue.
5. Update with a Mac or Windows PC
A computer update bypasses the iPhone’s over-the-air installation path and is the most useful escalation while the phone still works normally.

macOS Catalina or later: Finder
- Back up the iPhone.
- Update macOS, then connect the iPhone directly with a reliable USB cable.
- Open Finder and select the iPhone in the sidebar.
- Open the General tab and choose Check for Update.
- Select Download and Update if offered.
Windows: Apple Devices or iTunes
Use the current Apple Devices app where available. Older Windows installations may use iTunes. Update the app before troubleshooting. Apple’s platform instructions are at Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iTunes.
USB and trust checks
- Unlock the iPhone and tap Trust if “Trust This Computer?” appears.
- Use a direct USB port, not a keyboard or unpowered hub.
- Try another known-good Apple-certified or otherwise reliable data cable and another port.
- If possible, try another updated computer and network.
- Temporarily test whether firewall or third-party security software is blocking Apple’s connection, then restore protection.
Apple identifies cables, USB ports, computers, security software, and outdated computer software as contributors to update errors: iOS update and restore errors.
6. Use the error number to narrow the cause

These groups indicate where to investigate, not a guaranteed diagnosis of a particular component. Apple’s full categories are in iOS update and restore errors.

7. Check server access, firewalls, and managed networks
When a computer cannot contact Apple’s update servers, verify that it can browse the internet, update its operating system and Apple software, and connect through another network. A firewall, antivirus product, VPN, proxy, or problematic router can block the connection. Apple’s network guidance is available at Error 3194, Error 1109, or other network connectivity errors.

Do not edit a hosts file for an ordinary wireless failure. On a work-managed computer or network, ask the administrator before changing firewall rules or network settings; Apple addresses managed environments at If iTunes or Apple Devices can’t contact the software update server. Work- or school-managed iPhones may also have policies that restrict updates.

Progress bar still moving
Do not repeatedly force-restart while the bar is advancing. Installation time varies with the update size and the number of files on the phone. Keep it connected to power and allow the process to continue.
Apple logo with no progress, repeated restarts, or “Connect to Computer”
If the screen remains unchanged for several minutes, the phone repeatedly restarts, enters Recovery Assistant, or shows Connect to Computer, connect it to an updated Mac or Windows PC and use recovery mode.

9. Recovery mode: choose Update before Restore
Warning: Recovery mode can lead to Restore, which erases the iPhone. When Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes offers both choices, try Update first. Restore reinstalls iOS and deletes user data.

iPhone 8 or later, including iPhone SE (2nd generation) and later
- Connect the iPhone to the computer.
- Quickly press and release Volume Up, then Volume Down.
- Press and hold the Side button until the Connect to Computer screen appears.
- In Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes, choose Update first.
iPhone 7 or 7 Plus
Hold the Side (or Top) button and Volume Down together until the Connect to Computer screen appears, then choose Update.
iPhone 6s or earlier, including first-generation iPhone SE
Hold the Home button and the Top or Side button together until the Connect to Computer screen appears, then choose Update.
If the computer takes more than 15 minutes to download the software and the iPhone leaves the recovery screen, let the download finish and repeat the recovery-mode steps. Apple’s complete instructions are at If you can’t update or restore your iPhone.
When Apple service is the right next step
Contact Apple Support or an Apple Authorized Service Provider when recovery-mode Update and Restore both fail, a broken or stuck button prevents recovery mode, the device repeatedly returns to Recovery Assistant, or known-good cables, computers, and networks all produce the same failure. Physical damage or persistent hardware-related errors also warrant service. Do not assume that error 4013 or another number proves a specific board component is defective; Apple’s troubleshooting categories require connection and software checks first.
Keep your backup status, exact error text or number, iPhone model, computer software version, and the steps already attempted available when you contact Apple. Support options are listed at Apple Support.
