WordPress’s generic “HTTP error” during an image upload does not identify one cause. First capture the failed request’s HTTP status and check the related logs; then use Site Health to check upload limits, directory permissions and image-processing support. Those clues help distinguish a server limit from a WordPress, plugin, theme or file-specific problem.
1. Find the actual response before changing settings
Reproduce the failed upload and inspect the browser’s developer tools. In the Network view, find the upload request and note its HTTP status code and any response text. Check the Console for related details, too. Record the time of the failure, then compare it with the PHP and web-server logs for that time. WordPress’s troubleshooting guidance points to logs for more detail, and support responses may ask for browser-console information.
The message “HTTP error” is not a diagnosis. A response such as 413 or 503 gives a more useful lead, but it still needs to be considered alongside the request, logs and site configuration.
2. Check WordPress’s upload and server information
In the dashboard, open Tools → Site Health → Info. Review the Server and Media Handling sections. WordPress reports values and details including maximum uploaded file size, maximum POST size, effective file size, whether file uploads are available, and image-library information. Site Health also includes a Filesystem Permissions section.

The effective upload size is constrained by both the individual-file limit and the request limit. A file can fit within one limit and still fail because it exceeds the other.
3. Interpret size limits across the request path
PHP’s upload_max_filesize limits an individual uploaded file. post_max_size applies to the whole POST request, which can contain more than the file itself. A web server or an intervening firewall or CDN can reject a request before WordPress handles it. WordPress documents the PHP settings in its core configuration reference.

- If the failed request returns HTTP 413: the request was rejected as too large. Ask your host to identify which layer returned the response and what limit applies.
- If smaller images work but larger ones fail: compare the file sizes with the reported limits, and ask the host to check PHP and server-level request limits.
- If every size fails: a size limit is less clearly indicated; use the status and logs to investigate other causes.
There is no universal correct upload-size value. The appropriate limits depend on what the site needs to upload and how its hosting is configured. If the relevant setting is server-managed, ask the host to review and align the limits rather than applying a guessed value.
4. Confirm that WordPress can write to uploads
Check Tools → Site Health → Info → Filesystem Permissions for the uploads directory. If WordPress reports that it cannot write there, ask your hosting provider or system administrator to check the directory’s ownership and permissions for your hosting setup. Avoid setting broad, blanket permissions such as 777; the right correction depends on the server’s ownership and configuration.

5. Check image-processing support if the file reaches WordPress
If the request reaches WordPress but image processing fails, review the image-library details in Site Health. It reports information about GD and Imagick. WordPress describes GD as an image-optimization library and documents its supported formats in the image optimization documentation.
Missing or unsuitable image-processing support is one possibility, not something the generic error proves. Ask your host to confirm which PHP extensions are available and check the logs for a processing error, especially if Site Health does not show the expected library or format support.

6. Compare upload workflows and isolate conflicts
Try to establish whether the same image fails in the standard Media Library and in only one plugin or theme workflow. Note whether the failure affects one file or several, and preserve the status and logs before changing settings.
WordPress lists plugin or theme conflicts, incompatible PHP versions and memory limits among possible causes of site errors in its troubleshooting guidance. A support report describes a 503 limited to one image-add workflow that changed after the user resaved the images; that is an example of a file or workflow-specific issue, not a general repair method. Do not treat resaving images or disabling plugins as a proven fix without evidence from your own site.

7. Give your host useful evidence
Contact your hosting provider when the evidence points to a server-managed limit, extension, permission or other setting. Include the HTTP status and timestamp, the affected file’s type and size, relevant Site Health details, and the matching log entry. Also say whether a smaller file succeeds and whether the problem occurs in the standard Media Library, another workflow, or both. This gives support concrete evidence to investigate instead of the generic error message alone.
