The Steam “Game already running” error usually means Steam—or a related game process—still believes the title is active. There may be no visible game window: the executable may have crashed in the background, an external launcher or anti-cheat process may be stuck, or Steam may not have cleared the previous launch.
The quickest reliable fix is to fully exit Steam, close the affected game and clearly related processes in Task Manager, reopen Steam, and try again. If the error returns, restart Windows and verify the game’s files.
Try this 60-second fix first
- In Steam, select Steam > Exit. Closing the window with the X may only minimize Steam to the notification area.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Windows Task Manager.
- If Task Manager opens in its compact view, select More details.
- In Processes, look for the game, its publisher launcher, a game-specific crash reporter, or an anti-cheat process clearly associated with that title.
- Also check the Details tab, where the game’s executable name may be easier to identify.
- Select only the relevant process and choose End task.
- Reopen Steam and launch the game once.
Steam’s official troubleshooting guidance identifies a silently crashed or unresponsive game process as a common reason for this message.
Do not end arbitrary Windows processes
Do not terminate unfamiliar processes merely because they appear in Task Manager. In particular, do not kill System, svchost.exe, csrss.exe, or unrelated Windows services. If you cannot confidently identify the game or its supporting process, restart the PC instead.

Why Steam says the game is running when it is not
The message is not proof that a visible game window is open. Depending on the title, the underlying cause may be:
- The main game executable is still running invisibly.
- A child process survived after a crash.
- Steam retained a stale running state after an unsuccessful shutdown.
- EA app, Ubisoft Connect, Rockstar Games Launcher, Epic Games Launcher, Battle.net, or another required client is stuck.
- An anti-cheat component remains active.
- The game is running under another Windows user account.
- The game starts and immediately crashes, producing a misleading “already running” message.
- Damaged files or a blocked prerequisite installer prevents a clean launch.
There is no single universal cause. The correct fix depends on whether the problem affects one game, several games, or every Steam title.
If restarting Steam does not help, restart Windows
A Windows restart is the safest next step when:
- No game process is visible but Steam still reports that it is running.
- Task Manager cannot close the process.
- The launcher or anti-cheat service keeps returning.
- Steam is unresponsive.
- The problem began after a crash, update, forced shutdown, or power interruption.
Restarting clears many orphaned processes and user sessions, but it will not repair corrupted files, incompatible drivers, broken anti-cheat installations, or account problems. After Windows starts again, launch the game once rather than repeatedly clicking Play.
Verify the game’s files
Use Steam’s file verification after a crash, failed update, or repeated launch failure:
- Open Library.
- Right-click the affected game, or open its library page and select the gear icon.
- Choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the scan to finish, then restart Steam and try the game.
Steam may take several minutes, especially for a large installation. It can also report that one or more files failed verification. According to Steam’s support documentation, this can be normal because some local configuration files are not intended to be replaced.
Verification can reacquire damaged or missing installation files, but it does not automatically repair a publisher launcher, graphics driver, mod, save file, account authentication problem, or anti-cheat service. Do not verify multiple games simultaneously or run the scan alongside unusually intensive disk operations.

Check external launchers
Some Steam games require a second client. If the affected title uses one, close that launcher completely, including its notification-area process. If it appears stuck, end only processes that clearly belong to it. Then open the launcher directly, sign in, allow pending updates to finish, and launch the game through Steam.

Repair anti-cheat and prerequisite installers
Games may depend on Easy Anti-Cheat, BattlEye, another publisher anti-cheat service, DirectX, Microsoft Visual C++ redistributables, PhysX, or other bundled runtimes. A canceled or blocked installer can cause a launch to fail before a game window appears.
Open the game’s installation folder and look for directories such as CommonRedist, EasyAntiCheat, BattlEye, or Installer. A typical Steam path is:
C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteamappscommon<Game Title>Your Steam library may be installed on another drive. Use the repair or installation utility supplied with the game. If it requests administrator permission, the prompt is expected only when the utility is inside the legitimate game directory and belongs to the game’s publisher or anti-cheat vendor.

Remove launch options, mods, and injected tools
A failed launch caused by an old launch option, mod loader, ReShade DLL, custom executable, or compatibility setting can leave Steam reporting the wrong state.
- Open the game’s Properties > General page.
- Remove temporary text from Launch Options.
- Disable mods, third-party injectors, and custom executables.
- Restore the original game executable.
- Verify the files again.
Back up configuration and save files before renaming or deleting them. Do not delete saves without first determining whether they are local or synchronized through Steam Cloud. Avoid permanently enabling Run this program as administrator unless the developer specifically recommends it; mismatched privilege levels can interfere with Steam, overlays, and launchers.
Temporarily isolate conflicting software
Steam lists non-essential software conflicts as a possible cause of launch failures. For one controlled test, close third-party overlays, recording or streaming tools, hardware-monitoring utilities, mod managers, input remappers, RGB software, overclocking tools, and competing overlay systems.
- Close non-essential utilities and overlays.
- Restart Steam.
- Launch the game.
- If it works, re-enable programs one at a time to identify the conflict.
Do not permanently uninstall or disable security software as a first-line fix. If antivirus or endpoint security is implicated, follow its vendor’s instructions for a legitimate Steam or game exception and restore normal protection afterward.
Update Windows, drivers, and the game
Install pending Windows and game updates, and use graphics drivers from your GPU or computer manufacturer. Steam’s general launch troubleshooting guide also recommends checking system requirements, drivers, file integrity, and non-essential software.
Driver updates matter most when the game opens and immediately crashes, rather than when Steam only shows a stale running flag. If the problem began immediately after a driver update, rolling back may be more appropriate than installing the newest version. Also check whether the separate publisher launcher needs an update.

Check other Windows user accounts
Steam’s official support page includes another operating-system user as a possible reason for the “app already running” error. On a shared PC:
- Sign out of other Windows accounts.
- Check Task Manager for processes running in another session, if available.
- Restart Windows if the other account cannot be reached.
Do not launch a second copy under the current account while another user may still have the game open.

For some third-party games, Steam suggests trying the executable directly. Open the game’s installation folder, locate the main .exe, and double-click it once. A direct launch may reveal a more specific Windows, launcher, anti-cheat, or missing-runtime error.
This is a diagnostic test, not necessarily a permanent workaround. Direct launching can bypass Steam features, launch arguments, authentication, or cloud behavior, and some games will refuse to start outside Steam. If it works directly but not through Steam, investigate Steam’s launch configuration, overlay, or client state before reinstalling.
Optional command-line method
Advanced users can terminate a known executable from Command Prompt:

taskkill /F /IM actual-game-process.exeReplace the filename with the game’s actual executable name. This is not a universal Steam command. A wrong name will do nothing, while a careless match could close an unrelated program, so Task Manager or a full restart is safer for most readers.

Linux, macOS, and Steam Deck
The Task Manager instructions above apply to Windows only. On Linux or Steam Deck, use the desktop system monitor or a terminal to find and close the remaining game process, restart Steam, and restart the device if necessary. Check the title’s developer support page and Proton compatibility reports before changing Proton versions; switching versions is useful only when the title has a known compatibility issue.
macOS users should use the system’s process-monitoring tools and follow the game developer’s Mac-specific launch guidance. Across all platforms, check operating-system updates, graphics support, file integrity, compatibility requirements, and non-essential software as appropriate.
For games that require Secure Boot or TPM 2.0, Steam says the store page may identify those requirements. You can check system details in Steam > Help > System Information.

When to contact the developer
Contact the game’s developer or publisher when the problem affects only that title and continues after process cleanup, a Windows restart, file verification, and removal of mods or launch options. This is especially important when the game uses a publisher launcher or anti-cheat, crashes immediately with a title-specific error, or began failing after a game update.
Include the game name, Windows version, GPU driver version, exact error text, whether other Steam games work, and any launcher or anti-cheat message. The developer may have a title-specific repair tool or known issue that Steam cannot resolve.
Do not reinstall Steam first
Reinstallation is a last resort. It consumes time and bandwidth and may leave user configuration, launcher data, account issues, or anti-cheat services untouched. If Steam itself appears damaged, follow Steam’s official recovery instructions carefully and back up important data first; do not delete the steamapps folder casually.
Offline Mode is not a general fix either. Steam notes that it requires prior setup, and games requiring an active connection or an external launcher may not work offline.
