If Facebook will not open, freezes, or will not load, first check whether it works at facebook.com in a mobile browser. If the browser works but the app does not, update Facebook and restart your device; then clear the app cache on Android or offload/reinstall it on iPhone or iPad. If Facebook also fails on other devices and networks, it may be a service or account issue—not a phone problem.
First, work out where the problem is
“Facebook isn’t working” can mean a crash, a blank Feed, a failed login, missing notifications, or just one feature such as Marketplace or Reels not loading. The quickest way to avoid unnecessary troubleshooting is to compare the app with a browser, another device, and another connection.
- Open facebook.com in Safari or Chrome on the same phone.
- If possible, try Facebook on another device using the same account.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and cellular data. Also check whether other websites and internet-connected apps load.
- Notice whether all of Facebook is failing or only one feature. If Messenger or Instagram are also affected, that may point to a broader Meta service problem, but does not prove one.

These tests cannot confirm a global outage by themselves. A problem may affect a region, a feature, or one account. If Facebook fails in both the app and browser across devices and networks, pause local repairs, use another communication method if needed, and try again later.
Quick fixes for Android and iPhone
- Check the connection. Load another site, then switch from Wi-Fi to cellular data or back. Briefly toggle Airplane Mode off and on if the connection seems stuck. If Facebook alone fails, temporarily disable a VPN, private DNS service, content filter, or network-wide ad blocker to test whether it is interfering. Meta recommends a reliable Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection for app downloads and updates (Meta’s download and update guidance).
- Close and reopen Facebook. Use the phone’s app switcher to dismiss the app, then launch it again. This can clear a temporary freeze, but will not repair a damaged installation or an outage. Meta includes closing and reopening the app in its troubleshooting steps.
- Restart the phone or tablet. A restart can clear a stalled process or network session. Open Facebook again and check whether it loads.
- Update Facebook. On Android, open Google Play Store, search for Facebook, and tap Update if offered. On iPhone or iPad, open the App Store, tap your account/profile icon, review available updates, and update Facebook if listed. Store layouts can change, so labels may differ slightly.
- Install any available operating-system update. Check your device’s software-update settings. If the app store will not install an update, also check that the device has free storage and a working connection.
- Check storage and restrictions. A device that is nearly full may struggle to update or run apps. Also check that data-saving settings, parental controls, or workplace-management policies are not blocking Facebook or its installation.
Meta’s surfaced compatibility guidance has listed Android 6.0 or later and iOS/iPadOS 11.0 or later, but requirements can change. Do not treat those older minimums as a guarantee that a device still supports the current app; check the Facebook listing in your device’s official app store. Avoid downloading Facebook APKs or “fix” apps from unofficial sites.

Fix a Facebook app that crashes or freezes
On Android: clear the cache first
- Open Settings → Apps → Facebook. Depending on the Android version or manufacturer, the path may be called Apps, App management, or similar.
- Tap Storage or Storage & cache, then choose Clear cache.
- Return to the app screen, choose Force stop if available, then reopen Facebook.
- If it still crashes, uninstall Facebook and reinstall it from Google Play Store.
Clearing the cache removes temporary local files and is a relatively low-risk step. Do not confuse it with Clear storage or Clear data: those options can remove local app data and sign you out. Your Facebook account and content stored on Facebook are separate from the app’s local files, but unsynchronized drafts or device-specific settings may not survive clearing data or reinstalling.
On iPhone or iPad: offload or reinstall
iOS and iPadOS do not normally provide the same general-purpose “clear cache” button for an individual app that Android does. After updating and restarting, try Settings → General → iPhone Storage (or iPad Storage) → Facebook → Offload App, if available. Offloading removes the app but retains its documents and data; reinstall it from the same screen. If that does not help, delete Facebook and download it again from the App Store. Meta’s uninstall and reinstall instructions describe removing the app from an Apple device and installing it again.

Reinstalling is more disruptive than restarting or clearing a cache: you will need to download the app again and may have to log in. Make sure you can access your account’s login and two-factor authentication methods before removing the app.

- Confirm that Wi-Fi or cellular data is working and that the device has enough free storage.
- Check for an operating-system update and confirm the app is compatible with the device’s current software.
- Make sure you are using the correct Apple or Google account in the store.
- Set the device’s date and time automatically, then restart and retry.
- Check whether parental controls, workplace management, or other device restrictions block downloads.
- If other apps also cannot download or update, troubleshoot the App Store or Play Store separately. Use Facebook in a browser in the meantime.

Facebook opens, but the Feed or a feature will not load
If the app opens but the Feed is blank, images or videos will not play, or Stories or Reels stall, refresh once and compare the same content in a browser. Check the connection and update the app before reinstalling. If just Marketplace, Groups, or another single section fails while the rest of Facebook works, consider a feature-specific bug, availability change, or account restriction. Repeatedly clearing data or reinstalling is unlikely to fix a service-side or account-side issue.
If only mobile data fails: check the phone’s cellular-data permission for Facebook, then temporarily turn off Low Data Mode or Data Saver. Test another app on cellular data and check for carrier limits. Resetting network settings is a late-stage option, not a first fix: it removes saved Wi-Fi networks and related configurations.

If only notifications fail: check both Facebook’s in-app notification preferences and the phone’s system notification permission. Also review Focus or Do Not Disturb, notification summaries, Battery Saver, and background-activity restrictions. Reinstalling does not guarantee that notifications will return if a system permission or account preference is off.
If Facebook will not let you log in
A rejected login is different from an app crash, and reinstalling cannot fix a wrong password, a security checkpoint, or an account restriction. First try signing in at facebook.com in a browser. If that works, the problem is more likely specific to the app. If login fails there too:

- Check that you are using the correct email address or phone number, and reset the password if needed through Facebook’s official recovery flow.
- If a recovery message or security code is delayed, check spam/junk folders and wait before requesting another. Do not share a code with anyone who contacts you claiming to be support.
- If two-factor authentication is the obstacle, try approving the login from another device where you are already signed in or use saved recovery codes. Meta lists additional options under Need another way to authenticate? → Other Options → Get more help in its two-factor authentication guidance.
- If you see unrecognized activity, an unexpected password change, or unexplained logouts on several devices, treat account compromise as a possibility and use facebook.com/hacked.
Use only Meta’s official site and in-product help routes. Do not pay an unofficial “Facebook recovery” service, call a phone number posted by a stranger, or give anyone your password, recovery code, or private account details.
For app-login problems, Meta also recommends trying the latest app or reinstalling it and then using a mobile browser as an alternative (Meta login troubleshooting). If Facebook says an account is suspended or disabled, follow the on-screen review or appeal route; repeated password resets will not resolve an account-level decision.
What “Facebook will be back soon” means
This specific message can indicate account-database maintenance rather than a fault with your phone. Meta notes that other people may still be able to use Facebook during this process (Meta’s explanation). Wait and try again later, and test in a browser. Avoid repeatedly changing your password unless there is a separate reason to suspect a security problem. If the message persists unusually long, use Meta’s Help Center or account-support routes.
Report a persistent Facebook bug
If the app still fails after the relevant low-risk steps, report the issue to Meta rather than repeating the same repairs. Meta says mobile users can shake the device and follow the reporting prompts. On a computer or iPad, use Help & Support → Report a problem; the mobile browser also has a reporting option. See Meta’s troubleshooting and reporting guidance.
Include the device model, Android or iOS version, Facebook app version if visible, the exact error, whether the browser works, whether it happens on Wi-Fi, cellular data, or both, and the steps that reproduce it. A screenshot can help, but crop or cover private messages and account details first. Keep a note of when the problem began and stop troubleshooting if evidence points to a wider Facebook-side issue; another reinstall is unlikely to help then.
