ERR_CONNECTION_RESET means the connection to a website was interrupted before Chrome could finish loading it. It is a symptom, not a diagnosis: the cause may be Chrome, your device, a VPN or security tool, your router or ISP, or the website itself.
Start by opening another website, trying the affected page in a different browser, and—if possible—testing it on another device or network. Those checks show whether to focus on Chrome, your computer, your Wi-Fi, or the site. Work through the steps below in that order, and stop once the problem is resolved.
First, find out where the problem is
Before changing settings, compare a few simple tests. Reload the page once and check the address for typos. Then try two or three unrelated websites.

Google recommends checking whether one or multiple websites are affected before treating a loading error as a general internet failure. Its Chrome connection troubleshooting guide covers browser, device, security software, network, and site-side possibilities.

The wording can help distinguish symptoms, but it is not a definitive diagnosis. ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED points to a hostname-resolution problem; ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT means the connection did not respond in time; ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED indicates an active rejection; ERR_NETWORK_CHANGED means Chrome detected a network change; and ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR indicates a problem during the secure-connection exchange. Network failures can overlap, so use the tests below rather than relying on the code alone.
Try the quick, low-risk fixes
- Reload and verify the URL. A temporary interruption or mistyped address can be enough to cause the error.
- Check internet access. Open unrelated sites or another app that needs an internet connection. On public Wi-Fi, look for a sign-in or terms-and-conditions page; a captive-portal login may be required before normal browsing works.
- Quit and reopen Chrome. Closing a tab is not the same as quitting the browser. On Windows, close every Chrome window and reopen it. On macOS, choose Chrome → Quit Google Chrome from the menu bar. On Chromebook, close Chrome and relaunch it from the Launcher.
- Restart the computer. This is worth trying when the error began suddenly or also affects other apps.
- Update Chrome. Check Chrome’s update status in its menu under Help → About Google Chrome (the exact label can vary). Install an available update and relaunch. Google also recommends manually restarting Chrome even if no update is shown.
Check whether Chrome’s profile is involved
Test the page in Incognito
Open an Incognito window and try the same address. If it loads there, an extension, stored site data, or a regular-profile setting is a leading suspect. If it still fails, the cause may be outside ordinary profile data—such as the network, security software, device, or website. Incognito is a diagnostic test, not a permanent repair.
Disable extensions one at a time
In Chrome, open chrome://extensions/. Turn off all extensions and retry the page. If the error disappears, turn extensions back on one at a time, testing the page after each change. When the error returns, update or remove the extension you just enabled.

An extension installed or updated shortly before the problem started is another useful lead. Google’s troubleshooting steps likewise recommend disabling extensions and re-enabling them individually.
Clear the affected site’s data before clearing everything
For a problem with just one website, clear that site’s cookies and stored data first if Chrome offers that option for the site. Otherwise, open Chrome’s More → Delete browsing data menu and clear at least cached images and files, then test again. Menu labels and placement can vary by release.
Cookies keep you signed in and remember some site preferences, so removing them may sign you out. Avoid deleting all browsing data as a first step when only one site is affected. Clearing browser data can help with a profile or stale-cache issue; it cannot repair a faulty router, ISP route, firewall, or website server.

Check VPN, proxy, firewall, and antivirus interference
Disconnect a VPN and check the proxy
Disconnect the VPN completely and test the site—not just pause a browser extension’s protection. If the page works, the VPN’s route, DNS handling, filtering, or software may be involved. Update or reconfigure the VPN rather than leaving it off permanently.
On Windows, review Settings → Network & internet → Proxy. The exact options can differ between Windows versions. Disable only a proxy you recognize and do not need. Work, school, and managed networks may require proxy settings; ask the administrator before changing them. Avoid arbitrary registry edits or proxy values found in troubleshooting posts. Chrome’s guidance on connection and proxy errors also notes that system and network configuration can prevent a connection.
Test security software safely
Antivirus, firewall, and web-filtering software can interrupt traffic. First check the product’s alerts or logs for a blocked connection and install available updates. If the vendor provides a temporary web-protection test, you can briefly disable that feature, retry the page, and turn it back on immediately afterward. Do not leave antivirus or a firewall disabled.
If the test confirms that the product is involved, follow the vendor’s instructions for a narrowly scoped Chrome or website exception. If the trouble began after installing or updating security software, rolling back or removing that product may be more appropriate than weakening protection. On a managed device, contact IT rather than overriding its policies.
If only secure sites fail, consider HTTPS inspection by security software, the VPN, certificates, or the computer’s date and time before changing DNS.

- Save work and pause activities that need a continuous connection.
- Turn off or unplug the modem and router.
- Wait about 30 seconds.
- Power the modem back on first, and wait for its connection lights to settle.
- If the router is separate, power it on next. Reconnect and test the site.
Equipment and ISP procedures vary, so use the provider’s instructions if they differ. If possible, test the same site on a phone hotspot. A successful hotspot test narrows the issue toward the home network or its route to the site, but it does not prove the ISP is solely responsible.
Windows-only: reset DNS and network components
If multiple browsers have trouble on one Windows computer, basic Chrome fixes have not helped, and the problem appears local to that device, you can try these commands. They are for Windows only; do not run them on macOS, Chromebook, Android, or iPhone.
Open Windows Terminal or Command Prompt as an administrator. Run each command separately:
ipconfig /flushdns
netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip resetRestart Windows afterward. Microsoft includes these types of DNS-cache and network-stack resets in its Windows connectivity troubleshooting guidance. They are diagnostic repairs, not proof that DNS caused the reset. A Winsock or TCP/IP reset can affect software that integrates with Windows networking.
If the issue seems related to the computer’s local network address, you can also try refreshing DHCP configuration from an administrator terminal:
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renewThis temporarily disconnects and renews the network address; it is not a guaranteed fix. After a broader network reset, a corporate VPN, virtual switch, Hyper-V setup, or other networking software may need to be configured again. Microsoft warns that some VPN clients and virtual networking components can require reinstallation or reconfiguration after a network reset.

Test Secure DNS only when the evidence points that way
Chrome’s Secure DNS setting changes how Chrome looks up website names. To find it, open Chrome settings and search for Secure DNS. Note the current setting, then make one controlled comparison: try the current provider, temporarily select another provider offered by your Chrome build, or briefly turn Secure DNS off. Restore the intended setting after the test if the change does not help.

DNS changes can help with name-resolution or DNS-provider problems, but they will not necessarily fix a connection reset caused by a firewall, server, VPN route, or ISP path. Do not assume that a public DNS provider is always the right choice: workplace controls, parental filters, and other managed DNS policies may be intentional.
Reset Chrome settings or test a clean profile
Use these steps only after trying Incognito, extensions, and the affected site’s data. In desktop Chrome, open More → Settings → Reset settings → Restore settings to their original defaults, then select Reset settings. Labels can vary by version or managed-device policy.
This is not a complete profile wipe. Google says the reset does not delete saved bookmarks or passwords, but it does reset settings such as the default search engine, homepage and startup behavior, new-tab settings, content settings, cookies and site data, extensions, and themes. If the problem still occurs only in one profile, create a new Chrome user profile and test the site before adding extensions or importing custom settings. If the new profile works, the original profile may contain a conflicting setting or damaged data. Avoid deleting Chrome’s user-data folder as a shortcut: local-only data and unsynced settings can be lost.

If one site fails in several browsers and on more than one device or network, contact the site owner or check its official status channel if it has one. A failure on one route or for one user does not prove the site is globally down.

If multiple sites fail across devices on the same network, contact your ISP after restarting the equipment and checking whether its service is disrupted. If the issue happens only on a work or school network, contact its administrator. If it happens on only one computer, focus on that computer’s profile, network adapter, VPN, proxy, or security software before replacing the router.
A site that works only when a VPN is enabled does not prove your ISP is at fault. It could point to routing, regional filtering, the site’s treatment of an IP address, or a different route through the VPN. Do not use a VPN to bypass an employer, school, parental-control, geographic, or legal restriction without authorization.
Mac, Chromebook, Android, and iPhone
The Windows commands above do not apply to these platforms. On a Mac or Chromebook, start with a full Chrome quit and relaunch, test Incognito, check extensions and VPN/proxy settings, and compare another browser or network. On Android or iPhone, force-close and reopen Chrome, restart the device, switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data if available, and check whether a VPN or content-filtering app is active. Chrome menus and mobile options differ by platform and version; avoid following desktop reset paths or Windows commands on a phone.

If the device is managed by an employer or school, its VPN, DNS, proxy, or filtering settings may be required. Contact the administrator rather than changing managed controls.
If the error keeps coming back
Before contacting support, note the exact error code and failing URL, whether other sites load, whether another browser or device works, whether a hotspot changes the result, and the network type. Also record your Chrome and operating-system versions, whether a VPN or proxy is active, which security software is installed, and when and how often the failure occurs.
Send those details to the party that matches the scope: the website owner for one-site failures across different networks, your ISP for a network-wide home connection problem, or your network administrator for a managed connection. This is more useful than reporting only that “Chrome is broken,” because the same reset message can originate at different points along the connection.
