If Sidecar says “Device Timed Out,” it has not completed a connection to your iPad; the message does not by itself mean the iPad is defective or your internet is down. First confirm that both devices support Sidecar and use the same Apple Account. Then check Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Handoff, temporarily test without VPN or traffic-filtering software, and try a direct USB data cable. Comparing wireless and wired results helps pinpoint the failing layer.
What the timeout can—and cannot—tell you
Apple does not publish a specific diagnostic explanation for the “Device Timed Out” message. Treat it as a connection attempt that did not finish in time, not as proof of one particular fault. The distinction between discovery and connection is useful:
- The iPad never appears: Check Sidecar compatibility, Apple Account, Bluetooth, Handoff, and wireless discovery.
- The iPad appears, then times out: Discovery may have worked, but the session did not complete. VPNs, security filters, local-network restrictions, or interference are possible causes.
- Sidecar connects and then drops: Look at wireless stability, sleep or lock behavior, filtering software, and—if wired—cable or port stability.
- Both wireless and USB fail: Check compatibility, account and OS state, USB trust, management restrictions, and then consider Apple Support.
These are troubleshooting clues, not Apple-certified mappings of the error to a cause.

1. Confirm that both devices support Sidecar
Sidecar requires macOS Catalina 10.15 or later on a supported Mac and iPadOS 13 or later on a supported iPad. Apple lists these Mac models: MacBook Air introduced in 2018 or later; iMac Retina 5K, Late 2015; and all other Mac models introduced in 2016 or later. Supported iPads are all iPad Pro models, iPad 6th generation or later, iPad mini 5th generation or later, and iPad Air 3rd generation or later. Check the model generation—not just whether a device seems new enough—against Apple’s current Sidecar requirements.

Both devices must be signed in to the same Apple Account (called Apple ID in older documentation), with two-factor authentication enabled. Sharing a Wi-Fi network or Family Sharing plan is not a substitute for using the same account. A device may support other Continuity features and still be ineligible for Sidecar.
2. Restart, update, and check the account
- Cancel the failed connection attempt and restart both the Mac and iPad.
- Install available macOS and iPadOS updates, then restart again if prompted. Apple recommends current software when Sidecar is not working; updates can also change network filters, permissions, or USB authorization.
- On both devices, verify that the same Apple Account is signed in and that two-factor authentication is enabled. If you recently changed the account password, check that both devices have completed any sign-in prompts.
- Make sure Handoff is enabled. On current macOS, check System Settings > General > AirDrop & Handoff. On iPad, check Settings > General > AirPlay & Continuity for Handoff. Labels can vary slightly by OS release.
Do not sign out of iCloud as an early fix. Signing out can affect Photos, Messages, Find My, and other iCloud services. Keep it as a late-stage reset, and only proceed if you know the account password, can complete two-factor authentication, and understand the prompts on both devices.
3. Check wireless Sidecar requirements
For a wireless test, Apple’s requirements include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Handoff enabled on both devices; the devices should be within 10 metres (30 feet). Apple’s setup guidance says they should use the same Wi-Fi network. Turn off Mac Internet Sharing and iPad cellular sharing for the test. - Bring the iPad close to the Mac and, if practical, move both closer to the router.
- Use a regular private network rather than guest, hotel, or work Wi-Fi. Some networks isolate devices from one another even when both have internet access.
- Pause heavy streaming, large downloads, or unnecessary Bluetooth activity while testing. A different Wi-Fi band can be a useful diagnostic, but Apple does not require a particular band for Sidecar.
The same-network guidance applies to wireless setup; it is not a reason to reject a direct USB test.
4. Test VPNs, firewalls, and security filters carefully
A VPN or security tool that blocks local traffic can interfere with Continuity. Apple specifically warns that VPN configurations may affect local networking and Continuity features. For a controlled test, disconnect the VPN and retry Sidecar. If you use third-party antivirus, endpoint protection, a network filter, or a firewall rule that blocks incoming connections, temporarily pause only the relevant filtering feature if it is safe and permitted, then test again. Apple’s related Continuity troubleshooting guidance also advises checking VPNs, security software, and firewall settings.
Re-enable protection after the test. A successful connection with a VPN off suggests that the VPN or its filter is involved, but does not prove it is the only cause. Do not permanently disable the Mac firewall. If the Mac or iPad is managed by a school or employer, do not bypass policy; ask the administrator whether local networking or Continuity is restricted.

5. Use USB to separate wireless trouble from other failures
A direct wired test is one of the most useful diagnostics. Connect the iPad to the Mac with a known-good, data-capable cable. Avoid a dock or hub at first. Unlock the iPad; if asked, tap Trust and enter its passcode. Then check whether the Mac recognizes it in Finder before trying Sidecar again. Apple says USB Sidecar requires the iPad to trust the Mac and recommends connecting it directly with a compatible cable.

Once the iPad is recognized, try adding it as a display.
- USB works, wireless fails: Focus on wireless discovery, interference, VPN or firewall filtering, network policy, and Handoff.
- Wireless works, USB fails: Focus on the cable, port, hub or dock, and Trust authorization.
- Both fail: Recheck eligibility, account and OS state, and any management restrictions; the problem may not be just Wi-Fi.
6. Reconnect from the right macOS menu
On macOS Ventura and later, open Apple menu > System Settings > Displays > Add Display, then select the iPad. You can also connect through Control Center > Screen Mirroring. On macOS Monterey 12, use System Preferences > Displays. Older releases may show Sidecar in System Preferences or offer it through a Display or AirPlay menu, depending on the version. Menu names are not identical across macOS versions.

If the iPad is listed, remove or disconnect the existing Sidecar session, wait briefly, and add it again. During troubleshooting, keep the setup simple: connect directly, leave only essential peripherals attached, and avoid repeatedly changing several settings at once.
Use the result to choose the next test

If it still times out
Try one other private Wi-Fi network, another data cable and Mac port, and—if available—a second compatible Mac or iPad. This helps establish whether the issue follows one device or one network. If the failure began after an OS update, restart both devices, check versions, retry USB, and test without VPN or security filtering; do not assume the update itself is at fault. Avoid beta operating systems while diagnosing a workflow you rely on.

That does not mean every managed account is incompatible; ask the administrator to check policy. If you contact Apple Support, note the exact macOS and iPadOS versions, whether the iPad appears, whether Finder recognizes it over USB, and whether wired or wireless Sidecar works.

Consider signing out and back into the Apple Account only after the simpler checks. Confirm credentials and two-factor access first, follow the iCloud prompts carefully, and restart both devices before trying again. Community reports describe this helping some users, but it is anecdotal and not a guaranteed Sidecar fix.
Sidecar is not Universal Control
Sidecar extends or mirrors the Mac display onto the iPad. Universal Control lets you use a Mac’s keyboard, mouse, or trackpad across supported devices while each keeps its own screen. If you need Mac windows displayed on the iPad, Universal Control is not a substitute.
When another setup makes sense
If Sidecar remains unreliable after the compatibility, account, network, USB, and restart checks, a conventional external monitor is an option if you do not specifically need the iPad’s display or Apple Pencil workflow. Third-party display tools are another route, but they add software, network permissions, and sometimes hardware. For example, Luna Display documents Wi-Fi and USB connection modes. Check current compatibility, privacy and security terms, and cost with the vendor before choosing a tool; a third-party app is not automatically more reliable or appropriate for a managed device.
