The Windows message “Can’t connect to this network” means your PC can see a Wi‑Fi network but could not complete the connection. It does not identify one specific fault: a stale password, router or DHCP problem, incompatible band, driver failure, power-saving setting, or damaged Windows network configuration can all produce it. First test whether other devices can connect, then work from the least disruptive fix to the most disruptive.
First, determine whether the PC or the network is at fault
- Try the same Wi‑Fi network on a phone or another computer.
- Connect the affected Windows PC to a phone hotspot or another known-working Wi‑Fi network.
| What you observe | Likely area | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| No device connects to the network | Router, modem, ISP, or outage | Restart the modem/router and check the service. |
| Other devices connect, but this PC does not | Saved profile, driver, adapter, or Windows configuration | Forget the network, then inspect the PC. |
| The PC cannot connect to any Wi‑Fi, including hotspots | Adapter, driver, Windows configuration, or hardware | Check Device Manager, WLAN AutoConfig, and the driver. |
| The PC connects but reports “No Internet” | DHCP, DNS, proxy, VPN, modem, or ISP | Test the gateway and internet path; do not treat it as an authentication failure. |
Microsoft recommends using another device on the same network to isolate the source. Microsoft’s Wi‑Fi troubleshooting guide covers Windows 10 and Windows 11.
Quick checks before changing settings
- Open the taskbar network controls and confirm Wi‑Fi is on.
- Turn Airplane mode off.
- Check a laptop’s physical wireless switch or function-key toggle.
- Move closer to the router.
- Re-enter the password exactly, including capitalization and special characters.
- Temporarily disconnect a VPN.
- Check whether the router has reached its device limit.
- Ensure the PC’s date and time are correct, particularly on enterprise or captive-portal networks.
- Restart Windows once before moving to repairs.
Windows’ current connection procedure is documented in Microsoft’s Wi‑Fi connection instructions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsForget the network and reconnect
Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select Network & internet, then Wi‑Fi.
- Choose Manage known networks.
- Select the affected network and choose Forget.
- Return to the Wi‑Fi list, select the network, and enter its password again.
Windows 10
Use Settings > Network & Internet > Wi‑Fi > Manage known networks; labels can vary slightly by release. Forgetting removes the stored profile and recreates it, correcting stale passwords, corrupted profiles, or changed router security settings without resetting the entire network stack.

Restart the modem and router correctly
- Unplug the router.
- Unplug the separate modem. If it is a combined modem/router, unplug only that unit.
- Wait at least about 30 seconds.
- Power the modem on first and wait for its status lights to stabilize.
- Power the router on and wait several minutes before reconnecting.
This temporarily disconnects every device on the network. It is a restart, not a factory reset: do not press the router’s reset button unless you intend to erase its configuration.
Try the other Wi‑Fi frequency band
If the router publishes separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz network names, try the other one. 2.4 GHz generally travels farther and through walls better but is more prone to interference; 5 GHz is usually faster and less congested but has shorter range. Older adapters may not support the band being broadcast, and 6 GHz or newer security modes can expose compatibility limits.
Microsoft advises checking the adapter’s Wireless Mode or Band setting when a network is missing or cannot be detected. Update the adapter or consult the PC/router manufacturer rather than permanently weakening router security.

Run Windows’ network troubleshooter
On current Windows 11 installations, open the Get Help app and start its automated network and internet troubleshooter. Older Windows 10 builds may expose troubleshooting through Settings or Control Panel. Menu names differ by release, so do not assume an old “Additional troubleshooters” path is present. The tool can diagnose and apply repairs, but it cannot replace testing the router, driver, and adapter separately.

Reset Winsock, TCP/IP, DHCP, and DNS
Use these commands when the adapter is visible but Windows is failing to obtain or use a valid configuration. They are unlikely to fix a wrong password, unsupported radio band, router outage, or failed hardware.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator and approve User Account Control.
- Run each command separately, in this order:
netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns
- Restart Windows and test Wi‑Fi.
netsh winsock resetrebuilds the Winsock catalog used by applications.netsh int ip resetresets TCP/IP-related configuration.ipconfig /releasegives up the current DHCP lease.ipconfig /renewrequests a new lease.ipconfig /flushdnsclears the DNS resolver cache.
/release and /renew can report errors for disconnected or virtual adapters; that does not necessarily mean the Wi‑Fi repair failed. Use the commands exactly as separate lines.
Check the adapter and WLAN AutoConfig
Device Manager
- Open Device Manager (you can also run
devmgmt.msc). - Expand Network adapters and locate the wireless adapter.
- Enable it if disabled or marked with a warning icon.
- Open Properties and review the Driver, Power Management, and, where available, Advanced tabs.
Use the PC or adapter manufacturer’s official driver. Roll back when the failure began immediately after an update and the option is available.

Disable adapter power saving temporarily
- In Device Manager, open the Wi‑Fi adapter’s Properties.
- On Power Management, clear Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
- Select OK, restart, and test.
This can improve persistent dropouts at the cost of potentially higher battery use.
Update, roll back, or reinstall the Wi‑Fi driver
Before uninstalling anything, record the exact PC or adapter model and download the correct driver from its manufacturer. Save it locally or on a USB drive so the PC can be repaired while offline; avoid random driver-download sites.
- Open Device Manager and expand Network adapters.
- Right-click the Wi‑Fi adapter and choose Uninstall device.
- Select Attempt to remove the driver for this device only when a backup driver is available and removal is appropriate.
- Choose Uninstall, then restart.
- Let Windows redetect the adapter or install the saved manufacturer package manually.
Microsoft notes that Windows normally redetects the adapter after a restart but recommends preparing a backup first. Driver date and version should be compared with the manufacturer’s current listing.

ipconfig
ipconfig /all
ipconfig /all | findstr /c:"DNS Servers"
ping <default-gateway-address>
Replace the placeholder with the Default Gateway shown by ipconfig, for example:
ping 192.168.1.1
- Gateway replies show that the PC can reach the local router.
- No gateway replies point to a local Wi‑Fi, adapter, router, or configuration problem.
- If the gateway replies but websites do not load, investigate the modem, ISP, DNS, proxy, VPN, or firewall.
- An address beginning with
169.254.usually means DHCP did not provide an address, unless that range was intentionally configured.
If Ethernet works while Wi‑Fi does not, the wireless path or router configuration becomes the leading suspect. Microsoft also recommends Ethernet as an isolation test.

- Check the gateway with
pingand renew DHCP withipconfig /renew. - Open Settings > Network & Internet > Proxy and turn off an unintended manual proxy.
- Disconnect VPN software temporarily.
- Check that DNS servers appear in
ipconfig /all; flush the cache if name resolution is stale. - Test another device or Ethernet to separate the PC from the modem or ISP.
Changing public DNS cannot repair a wrong Wi‑Fi password, unsupported frequency, or inability to reach the router. Do not disable IPv6 as a routine fix.

- Stay Safe Online: The wifi dongle supports WPA-PSK, WPA2-PSK, WPA/WPA2 mixed encryption modes. Note: Make sure that the distance between the adapter and router should be within 30ft
Use Network reset only as the last software step
Windows 11
- Open Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings.
- Select Network reset, then Reset now.
- Confirm and allow Windows to restart.
Windows 10
- Open Settings > Network & Internet > Status.
- Select Network reset, then Reset now.
Network reset removes and reinstalls network adapters, returns adapter settings to defaults, and requires the Wi‑Fi password again. VPN clients, Hyper‑V virtual switches, and other networking software may need repair or reinstallation; profiles can change to Public, affecting local discoverability. Microsoft recommends this only after simpler fixes.
Cases that need specialist help
- Work, school, hotel, or enterprise Wi‑Fi: WPA‑Enterprise, certificates, captive portals, Group Policy, MAC registration, or VPN requirements need the organization’s IT team.
- Failure after an update: check for a driver regression, roll back when possible, or remove a clearly implicated update only with evidence.
- No adapter in Device Manager: check firmware, BIOS wireless settings, hardware switches, and manufacturer diagnostics; the adapter may be disconnected or failing.
- Band or security incompatibility: consult both manufacturers and prefer a supported driver or adapter over weakening router security.
- Every device fails: contact the ISP or router manufacturer after the restart sequence.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Wi‑Fi work on my phone but not Windows?
That points toward the Windows PC’s saved network profile, driver, adapter settings, or compatibility. Forget the network, reconnect, and then check Device Manager if other networks also fail.
Will Network reset delete my personal files?
No. It does remove and reinstall network adapters and resets networking configuration, so VPNs, virtual switches, saved connections, and network profiles may need to be configured again.
Should I disable IPv6?
No. Disabling IPv6 is not a general solution and can create compatibility problems. Use the gateway, DHCP, proxy, and driver checks that match the symptom.
Why does the PC connect to a hotspot but not home Wi‑Fi?
The home router’s saved profile, password, band, security mode, DHCP state, or device limit is more likely than a failed adapter. Forget the home network, try its other band, and restart the router.
Can a USB Wi‑Fi adapter solve the problem?
It can be a late-stage workaround after confirming the internal adapter is missing, defective, or incompatible. Diagnose first rather than buying hardware for a profile or router problem.
