“Something went wrong” is a generic Copilot failure, not a diagnosis. Bing Chat is Microsoft’s former name for Copilot in Bing. Start by checking whether the problem affects only one browser profile or also other browsers, devices, and networks. Then work through the least-destructive fixes below before changing firewall settings or reinstalling anything.
1. Check whether Copilot is experiencing an outage
Open Microsoft’s consumer service-health page, especially if the error began suddenly, prompts will not submit, the pane is blank, or repeated Refresh messages appear. A status page marked operational cannot rule out a regional, account-specific, or endpoint problem, and consumer Copilot incidents may not appear in Microsoft 365 service health.
If the same failure occurs in several browsers, on another device, or on another network, stop repeatedly clearing local data. The evidence points more toward an account, policy, regional, or Microsoft-side problem; waiting and checking status again may be the correct fix.
2. Run the quick, low-risk tests
- Reload the page, then restart Edge or the Copilot app.
- Try a short prompt, such as “What is the current date?” A long prompt, attachment, conversation, or mode can fail while basic chat works.
- Test another browser, such as Chrome or Firefox, or test another device. This separates an Edge/profile problem from an account or service problem.
- Try an InPrivate window in Edge. Select Settings and more (…) > New InPrivate window, open Bing or Copilot, sign in if requested, and submit the short prompt.
InPrivate starts with a cleaner session and normally does not reuse your profile’s accumulated cookies or most extensions. If Copilot works there, stale site data, an extension, or a session cookie is the likely boundary. When all InPrivate windows close, Edge removes their history, cookies, site data, cached files, passwords, autofill data, permissions, and hosted-app data. InPrivate is not anonymous: employers, schools, and internet providers may still observe relevant activity, as Microsoft explains in its InPrivate documentation.

3. Sign out and authenticate again
For a stale authentication context, sign out of the Microsoft account used by Bing/Copilot, close Bing, Copilot, and Edge tabs, fully quit Edge, reopen it, and sign in again. In the Edge sidebar, Microsoft specifically recommends completing the Sign in prompt or signing out and back into the Edge profile when the pane shows Sign in or Try again (Microsoft’s sidebar guidance).
- Confirm that you are using the intended personal, work, or school account.
- Organizational policies can restrict Copilot or its endpoints; do not bypass them.
- Region, platform, age, or child-account eligibility can affect Edge sidebar availability.
- Cookies required to retain authentication may be blocked.
Do not buy Microsoft 365 merely because the interface says Copilot. Licensed Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat and consumer Copilot in Bing are separate experiences with different requirements.
4. Clear cached files and relevant site data
Use the least destructive option first. In Edge select Settings and more (…) > Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Choose what to clear. Pick a time range and begin with Cached images and files. If reauthentication appears necessary, also select Cookies and other site data, choose Clear now, restart Edge, and sign in again. Microsoft documents this path in its browsing-data guidance.

For the Windows Copilot app, Microsoft documents a separate control: Profile > Settings > Browsing settings > Web data and security > Clear browsing data (Copilot privacy FAQ).
5. Disable extensions, VPNs, and security filters for a controlled test
Isolate extensions
Select Extensions > Manage extensions, turn extensions off temporarily, reload Copilot, and then re-enable them one at a time. Prioritize ad and script blockers, privacy or cookie controls, search modifiers, web-traffic scanners, AI overlays, and VPN/proxy add-ons. An InPrivate test is often faster because extensions are commonly disabled there. Microsoft documents the controls at Edge extension support.
Test the network safely
Disconnect an existing VPN or proxy briefly, try a permitted phone hotspot, and restart the router if other sites also fail. VPN routing, DNS, IP reputation, firewall rules, and security filtering can interfere with Microsoft endpoints or sign-in. Do not leave antivirus or firewall protection disabled, and never bypass an employer’s or school’s controls; ask the administrator instead. Copilot in the web page, the Edge sidebar, the Windows Copilot app/PWA, and Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat can show similar errors but use different authentication, endpoints, and policies. Microsoft says the consumer Edge sidebar uses this endpoint:

- Open the endpoint in a new tab on the affected device.
- If it does not load, a network, firewall, DNS, or allow-list rule may be blocking it.
- If it loads, sign in to the Edge profile again, retry, and check service health.
Reachability only proves that this device and network can contact the endpoint; it does not prove that authentication or Copilot itself is healthy. Enterprise profiles may use a configurable MetaOS App Service endpoint instead. Do not alter firewall rules without understanding the security impact or consulting IT. Microsoft lists account, region, platform, policy, and outage branches in its Copilot Chat loading guidance.
7. Update or repair Microsoft Edge
Update
- Open Settings and more (…) > Settings > About Microsoft Edge.
- Allow Edge to check for and install updates.
- Restart Edge and test again.
Also check Windows Update if the issue followed a system change or Edge cannot update normally.
Repair on Windows
- Close Edge.
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft Edge, select Modify, and approve the administrator prompt.
- Keep the device online and select Repair.
Microsoft says repair should not affect browser data or settings, although that is a documented expectation rather than an absolute guarantee. Modify may be unavailable on a managed installation. Do not delete Edge folders or reset Windows as an early fix. Microsoft notes that the Windows Copilot app is a Progressive Web App using the Edge platform; keep Edge installed and current (apps and widgets that depend on Edge).
8. Run Microsoft’s connectivity troubleshooter
In Windows, open Get Help, search for Copilot connectivity troubleshooter, run the guided checks, and review reported firewall or connection blockers. It is particularly useful when both the Windows app and Edge sidebar fail, ordinary websites work, or security software and device management may be involved. When nothing fixes it
Compare results across browsers, devices, and networks. If the problem follows the account everywhere, verify the account and region, check Microsoft status, and contact Microsoft support. Include the exact error text, product and interface (web, sidebar, Windows app, or Microsoft 365), browser and version, operating system, account type, approximate UTC time, network used, and the tests that succeeded or failed. This information is more useful than installing an unofficial “Bing repair” utility, registry cleaner, driver updater, or third-party Copilot installer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Bing Chat still available?
Microsoft renamed Bing Chat as Copilot in Bing. Older guides may still use the Bing Chat name, while current support pages generally say Copilot.
Is the error necessarily caused by my internet connection?
No. The same message can result from profile data, extensions, authentication, account eligibility, policies, endpoint filtering, or a Microsoft-side incident. Cross-browser and cross-network tests help separate these causes.

Why does Copilot work in Chrome but not Edge?
That result points toward an Edge profile, extension, cache, browser-version, or Edge-specific policy issue. Update Edge, test extensions, clear relevant data, and repair Edge if necessary.
Do I need Microsoft 365 to use Copilot in Bing?
Not automatically. Consumer Copilot in Bing and licensed Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat are different products; a Microsoft 365 license problem does not by itself explain a Bing Copilot error.
Can a VPN cause this error?
A VPN can interfere with routing, DNS, IP reputation, or security filtering in some environments. Disconnect an existing VPN briefly as a diagnostic test, then restore it or contact its administrator.
Should I reinstall Microsoft Edge?
Usually no. Test InPrivate, another browser or network, sign-in, extensions, updates, and the supported Windows Repair option first. The Windows Copilot app depends on the Edge platform.
How can I tell whether Microsoft is having an outage?
Check Microsoft’s consumer service-health page and compare behavior across browsers, devices, and networks. A green status page is useful but does not rule out a regional or endpoint-specific incident.
