“Firefox’s address bar is not working” can describe several different problems: the field may reject typing, autocomplete may be empty, Enter may fail to submit a search, or Firefox may send searches to an unexpected provider. Diagnose the exact symptom first. Press Ctrl+L ( Command+L on macOS), enter a known web address and then a simple search phrase, and note whether text is accepted, a suggestion list appears, and Enter opens the expected page.
Firefox combines URL entry and web search in one field, but search submission and the autocomplete dropdown are separate functions. The checks below therefore start with the narrowest setting and move toward broader diagnostics.
Identify which address-bar function is failing

If the address bar will not accept typing
- Click the address bar or press Ctrl+L on Windows/Linux or Command+L on macOS.
- Type a short, known URL such as
https://example.com. If the text appears, the input field works; continue with the symptom-specific sections below. - If no text appears, close and reopen Firefox and repeat the test before changing settings.
- If the problem persists, open Menu > Help > Troubleshoot Mode, confirm the restart, and choose Open when Firefox displays the mode prompt. Troubleshoot Mode temporarily disables extensions, uses the default theme, turns off hardware acceleration and WebGL, and disables some customizations. Details are in Mozilla’s Troubleshoot Mode instructions.
If typing works in Troubleshoot Mode, return to normal mode and investigate the items that were disabled. If typing still fails there, those disabled items are not the cause; continue with targeted preferences and profile checks rather than assuming the profile is corrupted.
When autocomplete suggestions are missing
Autocomplete is independent of the search that occurs after you press Enter. Firefox can build the dropdown from several sources, and the labels or available controls can vary by Firefox version and region. Open Settings > Search and inspect the address-bar and Firefox Suggest controls.

Check each suggestion source
- Browsing history: previously visited pages can appear as you type.
- Bookmarks: saved pages can supply results even after history is cleared.
- Open tabs: pages currently open in another tab can be suggested.
- Shortcuts: pinned or shortcut entries may be shown.
- Search engines and search suggestions: the default provider may supply query suggestions.
- Firefox Suggest: a separate category with controls that can differ by region or progressive rollout.
Enable only the categories you actually want, then close Settings and test with a distinctive word from a known page. A missing list can therefore be an intentional setting or an availability difference, not a failed address bar.
Remove one unwanted result without wiping everything
When an unwanted entry appears, open the three-dot menu beside it and choose the applicable removal option. Removing a history entry affects history-derived suggestions; a bookmarked page can continue to appear until you remove the bookmark or exclude bookmarks from address-bar results. Mozilla documents the per-result process in Remove websites from the address bar suggestions.
Do not clear all history as a first response. It can remove useful history-based suggestions while leaving bookmark-based entries untouched.
When Enter does not search or uses the wrong provider
Verify the default search engine
- Open Menu > Settings ( Preferences on some macOS builds).
- Select Search.
- Check Default Search Engine and choose the provider you intend to use.
- Press Ctrl+L/Command+L, type a neutral phrase, and press Enter.
Firefox uses the selected default search engine for searches submitted from the address bar. Search suggestions may come from that engine, but the suggestion dropdown and the submitted search remain separate controls.

If the provider is correct but the destination is not
Test the same phrase in Troubleshoot Mode. If it works there, an extension, theme, hardware-acceleration interaction, or another customization is implicated. If it fails there too, review changed Firefox preferences and the targeted Search settings. For persistent redirection, use Mozilla’s What to do when searches take you to the wrong search website; do not assume malware or a particular extension without evidence from the behavior.
Use Troubleshoot Mode to isolate extensions and customizations
Troubleshoot Mode is a temporary diagnostic session, not a reset. Follow Menu > Help > Troubleshoot Mode > Restart > Open, then repeat the exact address-bar action that failed.
The problem disappears in Troubleshoot Mode
Return to normal Firefox and isolate extensions rather than disabling everything permanently:
- Open Menu > Add-ons and themes > Extensions.
- Re-enable or leave enabled one extension at a time.
- After each change, test the address bar with the same URL and search phrase.
- When the failure returns, check that extension’s settings and updates, or remove it if it is not needed.

The problem remains in Troubleshoot Mode
Mozilla says the disabled extensions, theme, hardware acceleration, WebGL, and related customizations are then unlikely to be responsible. Recheck the Search and address-bar controls, undo any recently changed preference, and test again. Keep the investigation targeted instead of making a broad reset immediately.
Refresh Firefox is the last resort
Refresh Firefox restores many settings to their default state while retaining essential information, but it is a permanent configuration change. It removes customizations such as added extensions and themes. Common failure patterns and precise fixes
“Search suggestions is enabled but not working”
Confirm that you are testing the dropdown, not the submitted search. Check the individual address-bar categories and Firefox Suggest controls in Settings > Search. Regional availability and staged rollout can affect what Firefox displays, so another installation may not show identical suggestions.
Only one old site keeps appearing
Use the three-dot menu beside that result. If deleting history does not remove it, check whether the page is bookmarked or disable bookmark results in the address-bar settings.

The address bar works for URLs but not phrases
This points to search configuration rather than text input. Verify the default search engine, then test in Troubleshoot Mode to rule out an add-on that alters searches.
Nothing changes after enabling or disabling a setting
Close Settings, restart Firefox, and repeat the same controlled test. Record whether the failure is input, dropdown, submission, or destination; changing several categories at once makes the cause harder to identify.
