If an SVG renders correctly in Chrome but its clipped paths disappear in a wkhtmltopdf PDF, the renderer is a likely cause: wkhtmltopdf uses an old Qt WebKit engine, and its output is not guaranteed to match a current browser. Start by recording the exact build, reducing the SVG to a minimal test, and comparing inline SVG with an <img> embedding. If those checks do not produce reliable output, simplify the clipping geometry or test a maintained renderer against the same fixture.

Why clipPath can disappear in wkhtmltopdf

wkhtmltopdf converts HTML to PDF or image formats using Qt WebKit. Its project status page says Qt 4, which wkhtmltopdf uses, has not been supported since 2015, and that WebKit has not been updated since 2012. Maintainer Ashish Kulkarni summarized the compatibility risk this way: “Qt 4 (which wkhtmltopdf uses) hasn’t been supported since 2015, the WebKit in it hasn’t been updated since 2012.” That age makes current-browser parity an unsafe assumption, particularly for SVG features.

The issue is not necessarily your SVG alone. GitHub issue #4611, opened February 10, 2020, reports missing paths using clip-path and ignored opacity in patched-Qt packages; an unpatched Ubuntu 0.12.4 build rendered differently. Issue #1975, opened September 24, 2014, describes complex SVG with clipPath definitions rendering incorrectly or going missing in wkhtmltopdf 0.12.1. Issue #3762 reports an SVG that displayed in a browser but produced a blank PDF when embedded with <object>. The project repository is archived and read-only, so treat a failure as a possible engine limitation rather than assuming a fix will arrive in a future release.

No authoritative published statistic quantifies how often wkhtmltopdf fails on clipPath. The reports establish that failures and build differences exist, not how frequently they affect all SVGs or installations.

Record the exact renderer before changing the SVG

First establish what binary actually creates the PDF. Package names and version numbers alone are not enough: patched-Qt and unpatched builds can behave differently. Save this information with the failing PDF or a small reproduction so you can compare results consistently.

  1. Run wkhtmltopdf --version and record the complete output. Do not assume a particular output string; include any Qt or patched-Qt notation the binary reports.
  2. Record the operating system, how wkhtmltopdf was installed, and the package or binary source.
  3. Determine whether the build uses patched Qt. Record the evidence from the package or binary documentation rather than inferring it from the version number.
  4. Record how the SVG enters the document: inline markup, <img>, <object>, or another route. Also keep the exact HTML and SVG used.
  5. Keep the same fixture and environment for every comparison, including any alternative renderer you test.

Build a minimal clipPath fixture

Reduce the problem to one HTML file with a single inline SVG, one clipping shape, and one painted shape. This distinguishes a general SVG-loading problem from a clipPath-specific one. Save the following as clip-test.html:

  </svg>
</body>
</html>

Render it with the installed binary:

wkhtmltopdf clip-test.html clip-test.pdf

The circular red area tests clipping; the blue rectangle is an unclipped control. If the blue shape is also absent, investigate whether the document or SVG loaded at all before focusing on clipPath. Then make a second copy of the fixture with the clip-path attribute removed. Comparing the two PDFs helps isolate clipping from basic SVG rendering.

Test embedding methods separately

When debugging, prefer inline SVG or a direct <img src="...svg"> reference, then test <object> independently. Issue #3762 describes a browser-visible SVG becoming blank in the PDF through <object>, so a blank object does not by itself prove the SVG file or clipPath is invalid.

For an external SVG, make sure wkhtmltopdf can actually reach the file: check that the URL or path resolves from the conversion process, not merely from your interactive browser. Use a correctly resolved or absolute location while testing, and declare explicit dimensions and a viewBox in the SVG. These checks help rule out resource-loading and sizing problems; they are diagnostic guidance, not a universal fix for clipPath failures.

Simplify the clipping geometry in controlled steps

If a basic circle or rectangle clips correctly but the production graphic does not, make a copy and simplify that copy one feature at a time. A design tool may generate nested groups, transforms, masks, patterns, and long or unstable IDs that make a small test unlike the original. Removing complexity is a practical compatibility workaround, not a documented guarantee that wkhtmltopdf supports every simplified case.

  • Replace a complicated clipping shape with one plain path, rectangle, or circle and test again.
  • Remove nested groups or transforms temporarily. If the result changes, restore them one at a time to identify the sensitive feature.
  • Remove masks and patterns from the test, then add back only what the output needs.
  • Use a stable, unique clipPath id and verify the reference matches it exactly, for example clip-path="url(#clip)".
  • Check that the clipping shape and painted geometry overlap in the SVG coordinate system and that the viewBox includes the intended artwork.

If the simplified fixture still fails only in one package, test a known working build if one is available to you. Issue #4611 documents materially different behavior between patched and unpatched builds; do not assume a newer package is automatically more compatible. If you pin a build, document its Qt patch status and run the same fixture in CI so a package change cannot silently alter report output.

Choose a renderer based on the document, not just the symptom

If no wkhtmltopdf build you can maintain produces acceptable output, compare alternatives using the same HTML and SVG fixture. The project status page recommends WeasyPrint or Prince for controlled report generation and Puppeteer for documents that depend on dynamic JavaScript. Those recommendations do not establish a universal winner for SVG fidelity; verify clipPath appearance, text layout, fonts, page breaks, and any scripts your document actually needs.

WeasyPrint The report is controlled and does not depend on dynamic JavaScript, per the wkhtmltopdf status page. ClipPath output and the report’s layout on your fixture. Licensing and deployment details are not stated here.
Prince The report is controlled; it is another alternative named by the status page. ClipPath output, page layout, licensing and cost for your intended use. Specific terms are not stated here.
Puppeteer The page depends on dynamic JavaScript, per the status page. ClipPath output after the page has rendered, plus resource loading and layout in your deployment environment.
wkhtmltopdf You need to retain a legacy workflow for controlled documents and its output passes your fixtures. Build identity, repeatability, security isolation, and every SVG feature used by the real documents.

For a fair comparison, use identical inputs and inspect the same visible elements in each PDF. A renderer that executes the page correctly but changes pagination may still require report adjustments; a visually similar one on a single fixture is not proof that all production SVGs will match.

Keep conversion inputs secure

The wkhtmltopdf status page warns against processing untrusted HTML. Sanitize inputs and isolate conversion with mandatory access controls such as AppArmor or SELinux. Do not relax system protections or expose a renderer to arbitrary user-supplied documents merely to make a local-file fixture load. Security configuration is part of choosing whether to keep a legacy conversion service, not an afterthought to a visual workaround.

Or skip the browser setup

If you want a screenshot of a publicly reachable page containing your SVG to compare browser rendering, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API; it does not replace wkhtmltopdf or establish what the PDF renderer will output. One request can capture the page as an image or PDF, and its clean-shot behavior may make a page easier to inspect. For an apples-to-apples wkhtmltopdf diagnosis, still render the same fixture with wkhtmltopdf.

ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL in one GET request. The following cURL example captures a page; replace the target with a public HTML page that serves your test SVG. API parameters and response details are in the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response says which outcome occurred. Common failure patterns and what to do

What you see Next diagnostic step
The PDF is blank only when the SVG uses <object>. Retest as inline SVG and with a direct <img> reference; keep object output as a separate embedding case.
The unclipped control is visible but the clipped area is missing. Use the simple fixture, then reduce the production clip geometry and remove transforms or other complexity one by one.
One installed build works and another fails. Record the OS, package source, version, and Qt patch status; pin and test the known working build rather than assuming version order predicts SVG behavior.
The whole SVG is missing, including unclipped shapes. Check embedding, file or URL resolution, explicit dimensions, and viewBox before attributing the issue specifically to clipPath.
No tested build produces acceptable output. Compare WeasyPrint or Prince for controlled reports, or Puppeteer where dynamic JavaScript is required, using the same fixture.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a Chrome-successful clipPath prove that the SVG is valid for wkhtmltopdf?

No. It establishes that the SVG works in that browser, not that wkhtmltopdf’s older Qt WebKit engine supports the same rendering path. Use the minimal fixture and embedding comparisons to separate SVG structure from renderer compatibility.
