Steam error code -101 usually means Steam cannot reach a Steam server or the embedded webpage it is trying to load. It does not necessarily mean your internet is down. The cause may be a Steam outage, corrupted web data, a VPN or proxy, firewall filtering, DNS problems, a restricted network, or damaged Steam client files.
Start by checking whether Steam is down, then completely restart Steam, clear its web data, test without VPN or proxy software, and try another network. Avoid reinstalling Steam until these less disruptive checks are complete.

What Steam error -101 means
The error may appear as Unable to connect to server. Server may be offline or you may not be connected to the internet. Reports commonly write it as 101, but Steam users and troubleshooting pages often display it as -101.
Steam does not publish one universal diagnosis for this code. Its official troubleshooting guidance lists several possible causes, including server outages, routers, wireless problems, firewalls, proxy software, interfering background applications, malware, blocked ports, and ISP or network restrictions. Your symptoms provide the best starting point:
- Only Store or Community pages fail: clear Steam’s embedded web data and check
steamwebhelper.exe, VPN, proxy, and security filtering. - Steam cannot sign in: check Steam availability, firewall rules, DNS, proxy settings, and the network itself.
- Downloads or updates fail: clear the download cache, try another download region, and check firewall or ISP restrictions.
- A browser works but Steam does not: this does not prove Steam is reachable. The Steam client uses its own processes and connections rather than behaving exactly like a normal browser. Steam explains this distinction in its sign-in troubleshooting documentation.
Do these checks first
1. Check whether Steam is down
Open the Steam Store and Community pages in a normal browser. Check whether friends, downloads, login, and games are also affected, and ask whether other people are reporting an outage. If multiple Steam websites time out for many users, the problem may be on Valve’s side and local changes will not fix it. Wait and try again later rather than reinstalling Steam.
2. Exit Steam completely
- In Steam, select Steam > Exit.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- End remaining
steam.exeandsteamwebhelper.exeprocesses, if present. - Restart Windows and launch Steam again.
Ending a stuck process is a recovery step, not a routine permanent fix. Repeated forced termination can interfere with offline-mode information.
3. Restart the router and test a different connection
Restart the router, then test Steam over Ethernet if possible. You can also connect the PC to a phone hotspot or another Wi-Fi network.

- Steam fails on every network: the client, Windows configuration, security software, or Steam itself is more likely responsible.
- Only Wi-Fi fails: use Ethernet temporarily and inspect signal quality or router settings.

If only the Store or Community page fails
Clear Steam’s web data
- Open Steam.
- Go to Steam > Settings.
- Open In Game.
- Select Delete Web Browser Data, or the similarly named web-data option.
- Confirm and restart Steam.
Steam’s exact label and location can vary between client builds. This removes data used by embedded Store and Community pages, so you may need to sign in or reload pages afterward.
Do not confuse this with the download cache. Web data is the relevant first choice for a blank Store page, repeated loading spinner, or a Store-only error. Clearing the download cache is mainly for download and update problems.

Check Steam WebHelper and firewall permissions
The embedded pages rely on Steam’s web component, commonly installed as steamwebhelper.exe. Check that both steam.exe and steamwebhelper.exe are permitted by your firewall. Standard Steam locations include:

C:Program FilesSteamIf the issue began after a Steam update, remove and re-add Steam’s firewall rule rather than disabling the firewall permanently.
Opt out of Steam Client Beta
If the problem started after joining a beta or immediately after a client update, open Steam > Settings and look under Interface or Account for Steam Client Beta Participation. Select No beta chosen or Opt out of all beta programs, then restart Steam. Menu names vary by client version, and beta participation is only one possible cause.
If Steam cannot sign in
Check the date and time
Make sure Windows has the correct date, time, time zone, and automatic time synchronization enabled. An incorrect system clock can interfere with secure connections and authentication.
Allow Steam through Windows Firewall
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Firewall & network protection.
- Choose Allow an app through firewall.
- Allow Steam on the appropriate private network.
- Check both
steam.exeand, where listed,steamwebhelper.exe.
Do not permanently turn off Windows Firewall or antivirus protection. If a temporary test shows that security software is blocking Steam, turn protection back on and create a specific Steam exception. Contact the security-software vendor if you cannot identify the correct rule.

Disable VPNs, proxies, and filters temporarily
For one controlled test, disable commercial or corporate VPNs, manually configured Windows proxies, DNS filtering, antivirus web shields, third-party firewalls, parental controls, and router-level ad blocking.

To check Windows proxy settings, search Windows Settings for Proxy settings and temporarily disable manually configured proxy options. Restart Steam after changing the setting.
A VPN can sometimes bypass ISP routing or filtering, but it can also cause Steam connection failures, slower downloads, authentication issues, or game-related problems. Do not purchase a VPN solely as a guaranteed fix for error -101.
Flush DNS and reset Windows networking
Open Command Prompt as administrator. Run the first command, restart Steam, and test before proceeding further:
ipconfig /flushdnsIf the error remains, refresh your local IP lease:
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdnsFor a deeper Windows network-stack reset, run:
netsh winsock resetRestart Windows afterward. These commands clear cached DNS records, request a fresh local IP address, and reset the Winsock catalog. You may temporarily lose connectivity, VPN adapters may need to reconnect, and managed computers may block these operations.
Try another DNS provider as a diagnostic
If DNS appears to be the problem, temporarily test one of these providers:

Changing DNS cannot fix a Steam outage, firewall block, damaged client, or every type of ISP filtering. Record your original DNS settings and restore them if the test makes no difference. Steam also recommends reverting DNS changes that do not help.

If downloads or updates fail
Clear the download cache
- Open Steam > Settings.
- Select Downloads.
- Choose Clear Download Cache.
- Confirm and sign in again if prompted.
This refreshes Steam’s download state. Active downloads may need to restart or recheck. It does not delete installed games, but it is not a guaranteed solution for a Store-only error.
Change the download region
In Settings > Downloads, temporarily select another nearby download region and test the download again. This is a diagnostic for a content-server or regional routing problem, not a universal fix for error -101.
Also check available disk space, game-library permissions, firewall rules, VPN or proxy interference, and whether the ISP or network blocks Steam traffic.

School, university, office, hotel, apartment, and public Wi-Fi networks may block Steam traffic. Valve lists these ports for Steam login and downloads:
- TCP remote port
80 - TCP remote port
443 - UDP remote ports
27015–27050 - TCP remote ports
27015–27050
Steam’s official ports documentation lists additional requirements for game traffic, Remote Play, voice chat, and Steamworks peer-to-peer functions. Individual games may need more ports.
Users usually cannot change these rules on managed networks, and Steam says the required ports cannot simply be remapped to an arbitrary HTTP range. Contact the network administrator instead of attempting to bypass school or workplace controls.

Advanced client repair
If Steam fails on multiple networks after the previous checks, damaged or outdated client files become more plausible. First exit Steam completely and back up important settings. Keep the steamapps folder, which contains installed game files, and preserve userdata if present.
Use a version-appropriate Steam client repair procedure rather than deleting the entire Steam folder. A cautious approach is to retain steam.exe, steamapps, and userdata, then run steam.exe so Steam can reacquire client files. Some settings may be reset. Reinstalling Steam too early can leave the real cause—such as an ISP filter, firewall, proxy, or outage—untouched.
Unofficial workarounds
Community discussions sometimes suggest inspecting C:WindowsSystem32driversetchosts for entries blocking Steam domains or launching Steam with the -tcp option:
"C:Program Files (x86)SteamSteam.exe" -tcpThese are not guaranteed Valve-supported fixes for -101. Back up the hosts file before inspecting it, do not delete unrelated entries, and remove the launch option if it changes nothing. Disabling IPv6 should not be a default fix; it changes a system-wide protocol and is best treated, if attempted at all, as a reversible last-resort diagnostic.
When to stop troubleshooting
Wait for Steam if its services are broadly unavailable. Contact Steam Support when:

- Checked whether Steam itself is experiencing an outage.
- Exited Steam fully and restarted Windows.
- Cleared web data for Store or Community failures.
- Cleared Download Cache only when downloads or updates were affected.
- Tested without VPN, proxy, DNS filtering, or web shields.
- Checked firewall permissions for
steam.exeandsteamwebhelper.exe. - Flushed DNS and, if necessary, reset Winsock.
- Tested a hotspot, Ethernet connection, or another network.
- Checked Steam Client Beta participation.
- Preserved
steamappsbefore attempting advanced repair. - Contacted Steam Support or the network administrator when local fixes could not resolve the problem.
