Reset your password first, then sign in with the email address and login method linked to the correct Spotify account. If that works in the web player but not the app, troubleshoot the app, network, VPN, proxy, or region settings instead of resetting the password repeatedly.
Spotify’s current support pages explain login recovery but do not publish a dedicated, current definition of Code 3. Older Spotify Community guidance associates it with an incorrect username or password, but the same message can result from a wrong account, a different sign-in provider, phone-number login on desktop, a blocked connection, or a damaged app session.

Try this first: reset your Spotify password
Use Spotify’s official reset page: spotify.com/password-reset.
- Enter the email address or Spotify username associated with the account.
- Submit the request using the page’s Send or equivalent button.
- Open Spotify’s email and follow the reset link.
- Enter the new password twice.
- Open the web player or app and sign in with the linked email address and new password.
The reset form sends an email only when Spotify finds an associated account. If nothing arrives, check spam, junk, Promotions, Social, and other filtered folders, then try every email address you may have used. If a link is invalid or has already been used, request a new one and open it in a private or incognito browser window. Spotify’s password-reset guidance is available at Spotify Support.

Make sure you are using the right Spotify account
A successful reset does not prove that you reset the account containing your playlists or Premium subscription. Many people have more than one Spotify account.
- Search all email inboxes for Spotify registration, billing, and password-reset messages.
- Try each likely email address, not just the address currently signed into your device.
- Try the provider used at sign-up: Continue with Google, Continue with Apple, or Log in with Facebook.
- After signing in, check the profile name, playlists, saved music, and subscription status before assuming anything was deleted.
Use the account’s email address or Spotify username—not a display name shown in the app. Do not create a new account simply because one email fails; that can make the original library and subscription appear to have vanished.
Use the sign-in method used when you registered
Email and password
Enter the email address attached to the Spotify account and its current password. The visible profile name is not necessarily the username accepted by the login form.

Google, Apple, or Facebook
If the account was created with a provider, select the matching provider button rather than assuming ordinary email-and-password login will work. An email address can be the same across services while the Spotify account still expects provider authentication. Spotify recommends trying the methods used at registration; see Spotify’s login guidance.

Spotify’s current support documentation says an account created with a phone number can be used on the account page, mobile app, and web player, but not the desktop app. Sign in on mobile or the web player and add an email address to the account if Spotify offers that option. A phone-number account that works on a phone but returns Code 3 on desktop may therefore be an account limitation, not a bad password.
Determine whether the failure is account-wide or app-specific
Test the same credentials in more than one place before reinstalling anything:

- Try the Spotify Web Player in a private browser window.
- Try the mobile app.
- Try another browser or device.
- Try a mobile hotspot instead of the current Wi-Fi network.

Disable VPNs and proxies
Temporarily disconnect from a VPN, disable browser VPN extensions, and turn off system-level proxy settings. Then retry on the ordinary local connection. Spotify says VPN or proxy traffic can prevent requests from being processed, although that warning concerns abuse detection and is not a dedicated definition of Error Code 3. See Spotify’s abuse-detection guidance.
If Spotify displays a specific protection or suspicious-activity message after repeated attempts, stop retrying. Spotify says such a block can require waiting up to 24 hours; that waiting advice should not be assumed for every Code 3 message.

Check country, travel, and connection issues
After travel or while connected through a foreign network, disable the VPN and retry from the country associated with the account. Review the country or region setting in your Spotify account. Spotify Community guidance notes that free accounts may have travel limits, including a 14-day period abroad, but availability depends on plan and region; treat that as community guidance rather than a universal rule.

A hotspot test is useful because it separates an account problem from a restricted Wi-Fi network. If the hotspot works, investigate router filtering, DNS, firewall, proxy, or workplace and school network policies.

Reinstalling cannot correct a wrong email address or provider login. Once the web player accepts the new password:
- Fully quit Spotify, then restart the device.
- Update Spotify through the official app store or Spotify’s official download source.
- Sign out and try again.
- If desktop-only failure continues, reinstall the app. Reinstallation may remove offline downloads.
- On Windows, test the other official desktop distribution, such as the Microsoft Store version versus the installer from Spotify’s site, when both are available.
- Check that the default browser is signed into the expected account if the desktop login opens a browser.

If Spotify still says the password is wrong
- Request a fresh reset link; do not reuse an older one.
- Open the newest link in a private or incognito window.
- Choose a new password that you have not used previously.
- Log in with the account email rather than a guessed display name.
- Test the web player before returning to the desktop app.
- If you still have access on another device, sign out everywhere and review connected third-party apps.
Community guidance says sign-out-everywhere changes may take up to one hour. Do not keep making rapid attempts while Spotify is showing a security or abuse-detection message. General login guidance is at Spotify Community’s login FAQ.
Check for signs that the account was compromised
- The reset email never reaches an address that previously received Spotify mail.
- You receive an unexpected password-reset message.
- The account email, profile name, playlists, or subscription status changed.
- You can use Spotify only on a device that was already signed in.
- A reset succeeds but the library is empty because it belongs to another account.
Reset Spotify through the official page, secure the associated email or Google, Apple, or Facebook account, sign out everywhere, and remove unfamiliar third-party access. Contact Spotify through its official support site if the account email was changed. Never give a password, full payment-card number, or verification code to someone claiming to offer Spotify support.
When to contact Spotify Support
Contact Spotify after the reset, provider, network, and account checks fail—or immediately if the account email appears to have been changed. Include:
- A screenshot of the error with private information removed.
- Your device, operating system, and Spotify app or browser version.
- Whether the Web Player, mobile app, or another device works.
- Whether a VPN or proxy was active.
- When the problem began and whether you recently traveled or changed networks.
- The account email or username, but never the password or verification code.
Use only Spotify’s official help and support pages. An older Community thread discusses the historical Code 3 association with incorrect credentials, but it is not a current formal error-code specification: Spotify Community Code 3 thread.
