Start by identifying where the event came from: a Google Calendar invitation, an event extracted from Gmail, an unfamiliar subscribed calendar, or an app with calendar access. For a genuine unsolicited invitation, report the existing event as spam, then set Add invitations to my calendar to Only if the sender is known. That setting helps with new invitations, but it does not remove existing events or control every calendar source.
Identify the source before changing settings
Open the event in Google Calendar and check its sender, label, and calendar. The source determines which fix will work.
| What you see | Likely source | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| An organizer or invitation status, possibly marked “Unknown sender invitation” | Google Calendar invitation | Report it as spam, then change the invitation setting. |
| A flight, reservation, delivery, or booking entry labeled as an event from Gmail | Gmail event extraction | Turn off Show events from Gmail if you do not want these automatic entries. |
| Many unrelated events grouped under an unfamiliar calendar in the left-hand list | Subscribed, shared, or externally provided calendar | Hide the calendar, then unsubscribe or remove it if appropriate. |
| The events return after deletion, or appear without an invitation | An app, connected provider, or scheduling integration may be adding them | Review calendar permissions and connected accounts or integrations. |
Google says events created by another provider, app, or service cannot be reported through Calendar’s spam-reporting control. If the event is not a Google invitation, address its calendar or app source instead. Google explains which events can be reported.
Remove an existing suspicious invitation
- Open Google Calendar on a computer and select the suspicious event.
- Click More actions, then choose Report as spam.
- Confirm if prompted.
Reporting removes the event from your calendar. If it is part of a recurring series, Google says reporting it removes the series. Use this option for an unwanted or suspicious invitation, not simply any unfamiliar meeting that might be legitimate. See Google’s reporting instructions.

If Report as spam is missing, the event may come from Gmail, a subscribed calendar, an external provider, or a third-party app; you may also be viewing it in a different calendar app. Find the source before deleting it. Deleting the related Gmail message does not necessarily remove the calendar event, so deal with the event or its source directly.
Stop new invitations from unknown senders
On a computer, open Google Calendar and go to Settings → Event settings → Add invitations to my calendar. Google offers three choices:
| Setting | What happens | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| From everyone | Invitations sent directly to your email address are added automatically. | Convenience matters more than preventing unsolicited invitations from appearing. |
| Only if the sender is known | Invitations are added automatically from contacts, people in your organization, and people you have previously interacted with. An unknown sender’s invitation is not automatically added; you receive an invitation email. | A practical balance for most users who want to reduce unwanted events but keep familiar invitations automatic. |
| When I respond to the invitation in email | The event is added only after you respond to the invitation email. | You want the most control and are willing to process invitations manually. |
These controls apply to new invitations, not cleanup of events already on the calendar. Google also warns that choosing Only if the sender is known might reveal to an unknown sender that they are not in your contacts. Details and availability can vary with account and administrator settings. Check Google’s current invitation-setting guidance.

Keep pending invitations private when calendars are shared
When selecting one of the two stricter invitation options, review the accompanying choice about whether people with calendar access can see pending invitations. Turn off Let others see all invitations if they have permission to view or edit my events unless assistants or colleagues need that access. People who can only find your availability do not see event details, but sharing permissions can affect visibility of pending invitations. Google describes invitation visibility and sharing.
Change the invitation setting on Android
In the Google Calendar app, go to Menu → Settings → General → Adding invitations → Add invitations to my calendar, then select Only if the sender is known or When I respond to the invitation in email. Menu labels can vary by phone. If the control or spam-reporting option is not available in the app, use Calendar on a computer for the full workflow. Google’s Android instructions include device-specific guidance.
Stop Gmail from adding events automatically
If the entry is labeled as an event from Gmail rather than an invitation, open Google Calendar on a computer and go to Settings → General → Google Workspace smart features. Turn off or uncheck Show events from Gmail, then confirm if asked. Gmail can create entries from recognized emails about travel, reservations, meetings, and similar events. Disabling the feature can stop unwanted or mistaken Gmail-derived entries, but also removes useful automatic events such as flights and restaurant bookings. It does not control invitations, subscribed calendars, or events created by other apps.

Remove an unwanted subscribed or shared calendar
If unrelated events appear under one calendar name in Calendar’s left-hand list, uncheck that calendar to hide its events and confirm whether the spam disappears. If it is unwanted, unsubscribe from it or remove it where the interface allows. Do not rely on invitation settings: they do not govern calendars you subscribed to or calendars supplied by another service. In an external calendar app, inspect its account and subscription list; exact controls differ by platform and provider.

- Android app permissions: Open Android Settings → Security & privacy → Privacy controls → Permission manager → Calendar. Review which apps can access Calendar and remove permission from apps that should not have it. Phone menus can vary. Revoking permission does not delete events already on the calendar. Google’s Android guidance covers calendar access.
- Connected accounts and integrations: On iPhone, iPad, or desktop, inspect connected calendar accounts, subscribed calendars, and scheduling integrations for sources you do not recognize. There is no single menu path for every operating system and service.
- Invitation source: If an invitation still gets added under Only if the sender is known, consider whether the sender is in your contacts, belongs to your organization, or is someone you previously interacted with. Add trusted first-time senders to contacts if you want their invitations treated as known.
- Work or school account: A Google Workspace administrator can set an organization default at Admin console → Menu → Apps → Google Workspace → Calendar → Advanced settings → Add invitations to Calendar. User settings may override that default for future events depending on the organization’s configuration. A third-party work calendar may not be governed by Google’s controls. Google Workspace Admin Help describes administrator controls.
If only one device shows the events, check its synced accounts and calendar apps as well as the account’s calendars. If spam continues after you identify the source, remove the event and address the account, calendar, or app that created it rather than repeatedly deleting individual occurrences.

Handle event links and scam messages safely
Treat unexpected event descriptions as untrusted. Do not open links or QR codes, call numbers, download attachments, or use “confirm your account” buttons in a suspicious event. In particular, do not call a number in an event claiming that a subscription, antivirus product, bank account, or device is at risk. Avoid accepting, declining, or replying to a suspicious invitation unless needed; interaction can affect how Google treats the sender in future.
Report the event as spam when that option is available. If a related message is in Gmail, use Gmail’s spam or phishing-report controls and remove the message. A spam invitation by itself does not establish that your Google Account was hacked. If you also see unknown sign-ins, changed recovery details, or unauthorized mail, review your account security and use Google’s account recovery process; the calendar setting is not a remedy for account compromise.
