If Twitch viewers cannot hear your microphone, game, alerts, or music—or your VOD sounds different from the live stream—trace the audio path instead of changing settings at random. Check the device first, then the operating system, OBS, the live player, and finally the VOD. A local recording and a second-device playback test will show where the sound disappears.
Find the kind of sound problem you have

The signal path is sound source → operating system → OBS mixer → stream output → Twitch live player → Twitch VOD. The tests below isolate each link.
Run a quick test before changing settings
- Stop the stream. Check the microphone’s hardware mute, headset cable, USB connection, interface gain, and selected input. Disconnect unused microphones, webcams, Bluetooth headsets, virtual devices, and capture-card audio temporarily.
- Test the device in Windows or macOS. Confirm that the operating system detects the intended microphone and that its input level responds when you speak. Check that audio is playing through the intended headset or speakers.
- Check OBS’s Audio Mixer. Speak and play a sound. The corresponding meters should move and the sources should not be muted. A moving meter proves OBS is receiving audio; it does not prove the sound is reaching Twitch.
- Make a short local recording. Record yourself speaking and playing a game sound. Listen to the file with headphones. If it is silent, fix the device, permissions, source, or recording-track settings before testing Twitch.
- Test the actual live output. Start a brief test stream, then listen from a phone or a separate browser—not through OBS’s local monitoring. If the recording works but live playback does not, investigate stream output and track settings.
- Check the VOD separately. A successful live test does not guarantee the saved VOD has the same audio. VOD tracks and Twitch’s copyright-detection system can make it different.
Change one thing at a time and repeat the relevant test. This makes it easier to identify the cause and undo a change that makes things worse.

Fix a microphone that is missing or silent
Check OBS first
- In OBS, open Settings → Audio. Under the global audio devices, choose the intended microphone, or disable the global microphone if you intend to add it as a scene source.
- Return to the Audio Mixer and confirm the microphone is not muted. Speak and watch for meter movement.
- If there is no movement, add or re-add the device: under Sources, select + → Audio Input Capture, then select the exact microphone.
- Open the source’s properties to check that it points to a connected device, and confirm that the source is active in the current scene.
- Make a short local recording and check that your voice is present.
OBS supports audio input and output capture sources on Windows and macOS. If you add a microphone as a scene source while also selecting that same device globally in Settings → Audio, you can capture it twice and create echo. Use one path for the device. See OBS’s audio-source guide.

Check microphone permissions
Windows 11: Open Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone. Turn on microphone access, permission for apps to access the microphone, and access for desktop apps. Then open Settings → System → Sound to check the input device and input volume. Use Windows search for Microphone privacy settings if your Windows version uses different menu names. Check the volume mixer too: a game or chat app may be muted or routed to another output.
Microsoft recommends checking microphone privacy permissions when an app cannot use a microphone, including after some Windows updates. Test the mic in Windows before returning to OBS.
macOS: In OBS, use Review App Permissions if that option is available. Allow Microphone access for microphone capture. For desktop, window, or application capture, allow Screen Recording as well. Grant Camera access if needed for a webcam, and Accessibility only when an OBS feature such as global hotkeys requires it. Restart OBS after changing permissions. The exact capture options depend on your macOS and OBS versions; OBS documents newer audio-capture workflows for macOS 13 Ventura and later, with some features requiring OBS Studio 30 or later. If OBS still does not receive the mic
Test the mic outside OBS, close other apps that may be holding the device, reconnect it, and restart OBS. Try another USB port or cable, removing a hub temporarily. On Windows, check for a device-driver issue if the operating system itself does not detect the mic. For an audio interface, confirm that gain is set appropriately; enable phantom power only if your microphone requires it.

Fix missing game, desktop, or application audio
These are different kinds of sound: a microphone is input into the computer; desktop audio is sound played by the computer; application audio captures a selected program; and capture-card audio arrives from an external device such as a console.
Windows: choose one capture approach
Global Desktop Audio is the simplest option if you want OBS to capture most sound played by the computer. In OBS, open Settings → Audio and select the playback device the game actually uses. Check Windows Settings → System → Sound and the volume mixer to confirm the game is not muted or routed to another headset, monitor, or speaker.
Application Audio Capture is more selective: it can capture a game without also sending browser audio, notifications, or a call into the stream. OBS documents this source for Windows 10 version 2004 or later and Windows 11; availability and exact controls can depend on the OBS version. Add the application source and select the game. If the game does not appear, try opening it before configuring the source.
Do not capture the same sound twice. If the game is captured with Application Audio Capture and also comes through the global Desktop Audio device, viewers may hear doubled or echoing audio. Disable the duplicate global capture. OBS describes this in its Application Audio Capture guide. Newer OBS versions may also offer application audio through Game Capture or Window Capture; check the controls in your installed version rather than assuming every menu is identical.

macOS: check permissions and version-specific capture
For microphone and desktop-audio issues, verify OBS’s Microphone and Screen Recording permissions, then restart the app. Confirm the intended input and output in macOS Sound settings, and check that the game or application is producing sound. OBS’s audio-capture methods differ by macOS and OBS version, so use its current macOS capture instructions for your setup. Make a local recording after each routing change.
Alerts, browser sources, Discord, and voice chat
- Check that the browser source is not muted in OBS and that its audio-output mode sends sound where you intend.
- Test alerts separately, then balance their volume against speech and game sound.
- Confirm Discord or in-game voice chat plays through a device OBS captures. With application-specific capture, the chat app may need its own source.
- Watch for a caller’s audio entering both a browser source and desktop capture, or for a microphone being routed through both a browser call and OBS.
Twitch’s Stream Together audio guidance explains how microphone input, call output, desktop audio, and browser-source routing can interact; an incorrect combination can double microphone audio.
Stop echo, feedback, and doubled audio
Use a one source, one path rule: capture the microphone once, the game once, and desktop audio once. Check for duplicate capture when the same device appears in both global Settings → Audio and a scene-level Audio Input or Output Capture source. OBS warns that overlapping capture paths can cause echo; see its audio-sources guide.

- Do not play monitored audio through speakers while an open microphone is nearby. Use headphones while testing.
- In OBS, open Edit → Advanced Audio Properties and review each source’s monitoring setting and track assignments.
- Check browser calls, collaboration features, and voice chat for a second route carrying the same microphone or caller audio.
In OBS, Monitor only lets you hear a source locally but does not necessarily send it to the stream; Monitor and Output sends it to the stream and plays it locally; Output only sends it to the stream without local playback. Monitoring is not proof that viewers can hear a source. If local monitoring creates an echo or distracting delay, turn it off while diagnosing. OBS covers monitoring in its Audio Mixer guide.

Improve quiet, distorted, crackling, or delayed audio
Set levels before adding filters
- Set the microphone’s physical gain so normal speech is clear and does not clip.
- Adjust the microphone level in OBS, then balance game and desktop audio against it.
- If the game overwhelms speech, lower the game rather than turning the mic up excessively.
- Listen from a viewer’s perspective—preferably on another device. Your headphone mix may not match the stream output.
- Only after levels and routing are correct, consider filters. OBS meter readings do not by themselves tell you how loud a source will sound to viewers.
Filters are tools, not universal fixes. Noise suppression can reduce steady background noise but may damage speech when too aggressive. A noise gate can cut room noise while you are silent but may clip the start of words if set poorly. A compressor can reduce volume differences but may make speech sound unnatural or cause background noise to swell. A limiter can help prevent peaks from clipping, but cannot repair already-distorted audio. Gain raises a quiet signal and its noise together. Adjust based on your microphone, room, and voice rather than copying a universal preset.
For crackling, robotic sound, or delay
- Lower microphone gain and check that the signal is not clipping.
- Try another USB port and remove hubs temporarily. Reconnect a loose cable or device.
- Test without virtual mixers, voice changers, or extra audio-processing apps.
- Use a consistent sample rate across the operating system, interface, and streaming software. Neither 44.1 kHz nor 48 kHz is a universal fix by itself.
- Close unnecessary audio applications and check OBS and system load if problems appear under heavy game or encoding load.
- If only Bluetooth audio is delayed or changes quality when the microphone activates, test with wired headphones.
- Compare a local recording with live playback. For a capture card, compare its recorded audio with the console or TV output.
Why audio can be missing only from a Twitch VOD
A live stream and its saved VOD can receive different audio. In OBS, the Twitch VOD Track can separate the live mix from the recording. OBS’s documented setup uses track 1 for live audio and track 2 for VOD audio by default; tracks 3–6 can be used for other recording workflows. See the Twitch VOD Track guide.
- Connect your Twitch account in OBS under Settings → Stream.
- Under Settings → Output, enable custom encoder settings and turn on Twitch VOD Track when the option is available.
- In the Audio Mixer, open Advanced Audio Properties.
- Check which sources are assigned to the live track and the VOD track. By default, track 1 is live and track 2 is VOD.
- Assign your microphone and game audio to the VOD track if you want them saved there. Exclude only sources you deliberately do not want in the VOD.
- Make another short test and check the saved VOD, not just the live player.

When Twitch mutes audio in a VOD
Twitch says its content-recognition system can automatically mute portions of VODs and clips when it detects potentially copyrighted audio. A selectively muted section may therefore be a copyright-detection issue, not a broken OBS source or a general Twitch audio outage. Check Twitch’s muted-audio indicator.

An automatic VOD mute is not itself a DMCA notification or copyright strike. Twitch distinguishes its automatic muting process from a separate rights-holder notification, which may still be submitted if unauthorized material was used. See Twitch’s DMCA and copyright FAQs.

Twitch offers an appeal process if you own the rights, have permission or a license, did not play the flagged audio, or believe detection was otherwise wrong. Use its muted-content appeal process when appropriate. An appeal is not a license, and disabling or challenging a mute does not make unauthorized music safe to use. Check the actual license terms; “royalty-free” alone does not establish that music is permitted in Twitch streams and VODs.
Console and capture-card audio
PC audio instructions do not cover every console setup. If you use a capture card, confirm that it appears as an audio source in OBS and that the console sends audio over HDMI. Check whether connecting a controller headset changes HDMI output, and review party-chat, game-chat, and privacy settings. Test the card’s audio in a local recording. Avoid capturing the same console sound through both HDMI and a separate line-in unless you deliberately want to mix both.
If you stream directly from a PlayStation or Xbox without OBS, check the console’s broadcast controls for microphone inclusion, party-chat inclusion, game-chat output, and headset-versus-HDMI routing. The exact controls depend on console, firmware, account settings, headset, and broadcast method; verify them in the current support documentation for your console.

Reduce the setup to one microphone and one game or desktop source. Disable duplicate sources and temporarily remove virtual audio tools. Reconnect the devices, restart OBS, and repeat the local recording test before trying another live stream. If the operating system cannot detect the hardware, troubleshoot the device or driver there first. If the local recording works but Twitch playback does not, compare the stream and VOD tracks and note exactly which sound is missing and where. This is more useful for support than changing several unrelated settings at once.
Pre-stream audio checklist
- The intended microphone and playback devices are selected.
- The mic and game meters move in OBS, and neither source is muted.
- A local recording contains the mic and game audio.
- A second device confirms the live stream is audible and balanced.
- There is no echo from duplicate capture or monitoring.
- VOD-track assignments include the sounds you want saved.
- Any music used is covered by a license that permits the intended use.
You usually do not need to buy anything to fix Twitch audio. First isolate the problem with a local recording and a single, deliberate capture path. Consider replacing or adding hardware only if testing shows the device is faulty, its connection is unstable, or the setup cannot provide the routing you need.
