The message “Sorry, there is a problem with the OneDrive server” does not prove that Microsoft is down. It can indicate a temporary OneDrive outage, an account or storage problem, blocked network traffic, an expired sign-in token, or a damaged local app. Check OneDrive on the web and Microsoft service health first; only then reset or reinstall the app.
Find out what is failing
“Server” is a broad label. The failure may involve OneDrive.com, Office opening a cloud file, the Windows or Mac sync client, a mobile session, Microsoft-account authentication, SharePoint, or one particular file.
Before changing anything, note:
- The exact wording and any code, such as
0x8004def5or0x8004def7. - Whether one file, one folder, or every file is affected.
- Whether the problem occurs on the web, desktop, and mobile.
- Whether you use a personal or work/school account.
Community reports sometimes associate 0x8004def7 with account or server problems, but it is not a universal Microsoft diagnostic definition (Microsoft Q&A).

- Check Microsoft service health.
- Open OneDrive in a private browser window.
- Check storage, subscription, and account status.
- Try another network and browser.
- Sign out and sign in again.
- Reset the local OneDrive app.
- Unlink and relink the account.
- Update or reinstall OneDrive.
- Contact Microsoft or your organization’s administrator.
1. Check whether Microsoft is having an outage
Open OneDrive in an incognito or private window and sign in directly. Then check the Microsoft 365 Service Health information. Work and school users should ask their Microsoft 365 administrator to check the tenant’s Service Health page.

If OneDrive fails on several devices and networks, or Microsoft reports an incident, wait for recovery. A July 18–19, 2024 incident produced this message for users across devices; resetting the local app could not repair that Microsoft-side failure. Search results and social posts can provide clues, but the official service-health portal is more authoritative.
2. Test OneDrive in a browser
- Web works, desktop fails: concentrate on credentials, the sync client, or local network filtering.
- Only one browser fails: try another browser, private mode, and temporarily disable extensions. Clear site data for Microsoft and OneDrive domains if necessary.
- One file fails everywhere: investigate permissions, sharing, file size, corruption, or Office integration. Test another file and try downloading it from OneDrive.com.
- Everything fails everywhere: prioritize service health, account status, and support.
Some apparent server errors have been temporary web-side failures, including reported OneDrive 500 Internal Server Error incidents (Microsoft Q&A).
3. Check storage and account status
A full quota can stop new uploads, edits, and synchronization. Existing files may remain available but become read-only. Usage can include the OneDrive Recycle Bin and content in shared folders (Microsoft’s storage guidance).

- Sign in to OneDrive on the web and select the storage-used indicator.
- Review large files and confirm your Microsoft 365 subscription has not expired or failed renewal.
- Download or verify important files before deleting anything.
- Delete unnecessary data and empty the Recycle Bin only when you are sure.
For a work or school account, an administrator may need to resolve a tenant storage limit, disabled account, missing license, or permission problem. Buying more storage helps only when quota exhaustion is confirmed.
4. Try another network
Switch from Wi-Fi to a phone hotspot or wired connection. Temporarily disconnect a VPN or proxy only for a controlled test, then restore it. If the alternate network works, ask your workplace or network administrator to review firewall and proxy policies. Microsoft endpoint requirements change, so administrators should use current Microsoft 365 networking guidance rather than copying an old allowlist from a forum post.
Do not permanently disable antivirus, firewall, or corporate security controls. DNS changes are not a universal fix.

5. Sign out and sign in again
Reauthenticate after a password change, repeated credential prompts, account removal and re-addition, or a change to work/school licensing. A password change can require OneDrive to authenticate again (Microsoft sync guidance).
6. Reset OneDrive on Windows
Use this after service, browser, storage, and network checks. Microsoft says resetting does not delete cloud files, but it disconnects sync connections and starts a full resynchronization; selective-folder choices may need to be selected again.
- Press Windows key + R, enter
wsreset.exe, and let the blank window close. This resets the Microsoft Store cache, not OneDrive itself. - Press Windows key + R again and run:
%localappdata%MicrosoftOneDriveonedrive.exe /reset - If Windows cannot find it, try:
C:Program FilesMicrosoft OneDriveonedrive.exe /reset
then:C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OneDriveonedrive.exe /reset - Open Start, search for OneDrive, and launch it manually.
These are the current paths listed by Microsoft (reset instructions). A reset rebuilds local configuration; it cannot repair a Microsoft outage.

7. Unlink and relink the account
Windows
- Select the OneDrive cloud icon in the notification area.
- Choose Help & Settings > Settings > Account.
- Select Unlink this PC, then Unlink account.
- Start OneDrive and sign in.
- When prompted about an existing folder, choose Use this folder only after confirming it is the correct folder.
If sign-in remains stuck, open %localappdata%MicrosoftOneDrivesettings and delete PreSignInSettingsConfig.json, then sign in again. Follow Microsoft’s unlink and relink procedure.
macOS
- Select the OneDrive cloud icon in the menu bar.
- Choose Help & Settings > Preferences > Account.
- Select Unlink this Mac, then sign in again.
- If credentials remain stuck, use Keychain Access to remove relevant OneDrive or Office references, preferably with administrator guidance.
Unlinking disconnects the local folder but does not delete cloud data. Online-only files may disappear from Finder while remaining available on OneDrive.com. Selecting the wrong folder during relinking can create duplicate-looking folders, so verify the path first.

Android
- Open Settings > Apps > OneDrive.
- Force stop it, then clear its data and cache.
- Uninstall and reinstall OneDrive from Google Play.
- Sign in again.
iPhone and iPad
- Open OneDrive and go to Profile > Settings > Account.
- Select the account, then choose Reset.
- If it still fails, uninstall and reinstall the app.
Resetting or clearing app data signs you out and can remove cached or offline content, but it does not delete files stored in the cloud. Confirm pending camera uploads have completed first. A managed-device policy such as Intune may also affect work accounts; contact IT rather than removing management software.

9. Update or reinstall OneDrive
Reinstall only when the app will not launch, is damaged, the reset executable is missing, or the problem is limited to one device. Uninstalling the application is not the same as deleting the OneDrive folder, and removing the app does not delete cloud files (Microsoft guidance).
As of August 18, 2026, Microsoft’s recent-issues page says the OneDrive sync app is no longer supported on Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 8.1. Upgrade the operating system before treating compatibility failures as a server problem.
Work and school accounts
Business users can encounter Conditional Access or multifactor-authentication failures, SharePoint permissions, tenant storage limits, proxy rules, Intune conflicts, or organization-wide incidents. Contact the Microsoft 365 administrator or help desk and provide the exact message, code, device, operating system, app version, whether OneDrive.com works, network tests, affected files, and approximate start time with time zone. Do not bypass Conditional Access, uninstall Intune, or alter corporate firewall and endpoint protection settings yourself.
When to stop troubleshooting
Wait when the failure is widespread, cross-device, and confirmed by Service Health. Escalate when the issue persists after testing the web and another network, affects a business tenant, involves missing permissions or licensing, or risks data loss.
- Do not delete the local OneDrive folder as a first step.
- Do not empty the Recycle Bin without verifying backups.
- Do not permanently disable security software.
- Do not choose a new sync folder without checking the existing one.
- Do not assume a reset fixes a server outage.
The Bottom Line
Check Service Health and OneDrive.com first. If the web service works, repair the local client with sign-in, reset, and unlink/relink steps. If every device and network fails, preserve your files and wait for Microsoft or your organization to resolve the service or account problem.
