If discovery+ on Sky Q says “You need to upgrade,” asks you to restart your membership, or will not complete activation, do not buy another plan straight away. First check that discovery+ is included in your Sky package, then activate it using the Sky ID attached to that package and sign in with the discovery+ account linked during setup. These steps apply to Sky customers in the UK and Republic of Ireland; package eligibility and app screens can change.
Before you troubleshoot
“Sky Q activation error” is a catch-all description, not one specific error code. It can mean the activation page will not load, a code is rejected, discovery+ asks you to upgrade, or only certain programmes—often TNT Sports—are unavailable. Those symptoms can point to different issues: Sky entitlement, account linking, device registration, the app, or your internet connection.
- Check your Sky entitlement. Look in My Sky, your Sky account or your bill to confirm the package or add-on currently includes discovery+. Sky’s discovery+ page says Entertainment is included with qualifying Sky TV subscriptions on Sky Q, Sky Stream and Sky Glass. Offers and eligibility can vary, so do not rely only on an advert or an old offer description.
- Use the right Sky ID. It must be the Sky ID associated with the qualifying subscription. A Sky ID and a discovery+ account are separate accounts.
- Have one discovery+ email in mind. Use the account you intend to keep. Creating several accounts while troubleshooting can make it harder to identify which one is linked to Sky.
- Do not subscribe again just to clear an error. If you pay discovery+ directly and also activate a Sky offer, you may end up with two subscriptions. Check who bills you and read the applicable cancellation or transfer terms before changing either one.

- On Sky Q, open My Sky or the discovery+ app and choose the option to activate, get started, sign in or link an account. Labels can change.
- When asked, sign in with the Sky ID that shows the qualifying subscription.
- Create a discovery+ account or link an existing one when the Sky activation flow prompts you. Follow the on-screen instructions rather than starting a separate signup directly with discovery+.
- Return to discovery+ on Sky Q and sign in with the discovery+ account used in that Sky flow.
- Test a regular Entertainment programme first. If it plays, the basic account link is working; test TNT Sports separately only if your Sky package includes the relevant sports entitlement.
Sky says a separate discovery+ account setup is required. Its setup instructions are the best starting point if the menu wording differs from these steps.

If Sky Q displays an activation code
Follow the activation address displayed on your Sky Q screen. Enter the code exactly as shown and generate a new one if it expires. Do not depend on an old bookmark: customer reports from 2023–2024 described a six-digit code and the address discoveryplus.com/link, but that historical flow may not match the current screen. A normal discovery+ sign-in page is not necessarily the code-entry page.
Fix “You need to upgrade” or “Restart your membership”
These messages do not automatically mean you need to pay for a higher plan. They can appear when discovery+ does not recognise the Sky entitlement, when activation was only partly completed, or when the app is signed into the wrong discovery+ account.
- Stop before confirming a paid upgrade.
- Check in My Sky or your account that discovery+ is included or active on your package.
- Sign out of discovery+ on Sky Q, then close and reopen the app.
- Restart the Sky Q box (steps below), reopen discovery+, and repeat the Sky-side activation if prompted.
- Sign in with the discovery+ account linked through the qualifying Sky ID. Avoid creating another account as a shortcut.
- Try an ordinary Entertainment programme. If it works but TNT Sports does not, go to TNT Sports troubleshooting rather than buying an Entertainment upgrade.
Sky lists “You need to upgrade” as a discovery+ help scenario. Sky Community users have also reported seeing upgrade prompts despite believing discovery+ was included; those reports illustrate the symptom but do not prove one universal cause or fix. If the error remains after a clean sign-out, restart and relink, contact Sky to check the entitlement on your account.

Sky shows discovery+ as included, but the app still will not play
Treat this first as an account-linking or entitlement synchronisation issue, not proof that the Sky Q box is faulty. An account page and the app can appear out of step, and a programme may be unavailable because it belongs to a different plan.
- Sign out of the app and restart Sky Q before signing in again.
- Start activation from Sky Q or Sky’s current help page, using the Sky ID that shows the subscription.
- Use the intended discovery+ email consistently when asked to create or link an account.
- Check whether a package change, move from Sky Q to another Sky device, or change of household account happened recently.
- Test non-sports content and note whether other Sky apps work.
Before contacting support, write down the Sky ID, the discovery+ email you used, the package name, the exact on-screen message and which types of content work. Do not share passwords in a support forum.
No code-entry box appears, or the code is rejected
The activation flow may have redirected to a standard sign-in page, opened an outdated link, or lost its session. A code may also have expired. Older Sky Community reports describe users being sent to the general discovery+ site without a place to enter a code; they do not establish a guaranteed fix.

- Close the browser tab and restart activation from Sky Q or Sky’s current discovery+ setup page.
- Use the address shown on the Sky Q screen, not an old saved link. If the screen provides a new code, use that one and enter it without spaces.
- Try a normal browser window on a phone or computer. If the page still loops, try another browser or device; a private session, cookies or an ad blocker may interfere with some web flows.
- If the page repeatedly redirects or never provides code entry, stop repeating the same attempt. Contact Sky and explain that the activation flow does not present a linking form.
Discovery+ works, but TNT Sports does not
Discovery+ Entertainment and TNT Sports are not interchangeable entitlements. Seeing ordinary discovery+ programmes play does not prove that TNT Sports is included on your account. Sky says qualifying TNT Sports customers may receive a discovery+ TNT Sports & Entertainment plan for the duration of their TNT Sports subscription, but customers should check their specific Sky entitlement.

If Entertainment works and TNT Sports shows an upgrade prompt or asks you to contact your provider:
- Check My Sky or your bill for an active TNT Sports subscription, not just discovery+ Entertainment.
- Make sure the discovery+ account on Sky Q is the one linked through the Sky setup for that entitlement.
- Use Sky’s dedicated TNT Sports troubleshooting guidance.
Do not buy TNT Sports simply because a linking error is showing. An upgrade is relevant only if you actually want a tier or sports access that your current package does not provide.

Restart Sky Q and check other apps
A restart is a sensible secondary step after checking the account. It may clear a stuck app session, but it cannot add a missing subscription entitlement.
- Exit discovery+ and put the Sky Q box into standby.
- Switch it off at the wall, wait several minutes, then switch it back on.
- Allow the box to finish restarting, reopen discovery+ and sign in again.
If several apps fail, check the Sky Q internet connection, restart your router and box, and use Sky’s TV app troubleshooting hub, which includes guidance for multiple apps not working. If discovery+ works on a phone or browser but not on Sky Q, focus on the TV app’s sign-in, device registration or Sky Q software. Sky’s software help page explains how to check software and hardware details; follow its current menu labels rather than relying on an old version number.
A factory reset is not a good first response to an entitlement message. It is disruptive and is unlikely to correct a subscription or account-linking mismatch. Do one clean activation attempt after restarting; if the same error returns, escalate instead of repeatedly resetting or entering codes.

When to contact Sky or discovery+
Contact Sky first when My Sky shows discovery+ included but activation repeatedly fails, the Sky Q app shows the wrong plan, a TNT Sports entitlement included in your package is missing, or the activation page loops. Ask Sky to confirm the entitlement on the specific Sky ID and whether the discovery+ account has been linked.
Contact discovery+ when Sky confirms the entitlement and account link but the discovery+ account itself will not sign in or fails on multiple compatible devices. Tell support which device and content fail, and provide the exact error text. Keep passwords and payment details out of public posts.
To distinguish the likely fault: if only discovery+ fails, start with the account and app; if several apps fail, investigate connectivity or Sky Q; if discovery+ fails everywhere, check the subscription, account and regional availability; if only TNT Sports fails, check that separate entitlement. Sky’s cited discovery+ offer applies to the UK and Republic of Ireland, not a general guide for Sky Q users in other countries.
