A Selenium TimeoutException near screenshot code does not necessarily mean the screenshot command timed out. Find the exact line in the traceback first: navigation, an explicit wait, an asynchronous script, screenshot capture, and saving the image are separate operations with different failure modes. Fix the operation that actually failed rather than increasing every timeout.
Identify which operation timed out
Start with the full traceback, not just the last line of your test. Record the failing command and the exception text. A screenshot workflow often has several steps, and the failure may occur before an image is requested or after capture has already returned.

Selenium’s Python API documents screenshot methods separately from its timeout setters. It says get_screenshot_as_file and save_screenshot save PNG images, return False on an IOError, and should be given a full path. A failed save is therefore not automatically evidence of a WebDriver screenshot timeout. See the Selenium Python WebDriver API.
Wait for the page state the screenshot needs
A completed navigation is not the same as a fully rendered application. The Selenium project’s Waiting Strategies documentation says: “All navigation commands wait for a specific readyState value based on the page load strategy (the default value to wait for is "complete") before the driver returns control to the code.” A page can meet that browser readiness state while JavaScript-driven updates, data requests, or a particular target element are still pending.

Wait for an observable condition that matters to the image: for example, the target element becomes visible or a loading indicator disappears. Prefer this explicit, condition-based wait to a fixed sleep, which may waste time on quick runs and still be too short on slow ones.
Do not treat implicitly_wait as a general page-ready or screenshot timeout. Selenium documents it as a sticky wait used by element-location strategies. Page-load timeout controls page-load completion; script timeout controls asynchronous script execution. Neither is documented as a general way to extend screenshot capture.
Python: wait, capture bytes, then write the file
This example separates synchronization, capture, and storage so the failing stage is easier to identify. Replace the URL and locator with the page and state relevant to your test.

Choose a limit appropriate to the test and diagnose why the condition was not met if it expires. If get_screenshot_as_png() returns but write_bytes() fails, investigate the path and filesystem permissions rather than changing Selenium’s page-load timeout.
Python: check the built-in save result
If you use Selenium’s file-saving helper, pass an absolute path and check its boolean result:

Java: keep the capture exception visible
The Java TakesScreenshot API provides the driver or element screenshot interface. Capture may fail with WebDriverException, and a requested screenshot type may be unsupported. Handle the documented possibility without hiding the original failure:

Selenium’s documentation notes that conforming implementations follow the WebDriver specification; non-conforming behavior may be best-effort. Use only the timeout for the failing operation
When the traceback identifies a timeout, change the setting that governs that operation. Selenium’s Python API describes set_page_load_timeout as the limit for page-load completion and set_script_timeout as the limit for asynchronous script execution. These settings do not substitute for waiting on an application condition, and the API does not describe either as a general screenshot-command timeout.

First identify the timed-out command; then adjust its limit only if the operation needs more time and the underlying condition or environment is understood.
Check the session, context, and screenshot type
If the capture command itself is the failing line, confirm the browser session is still alive and that the intended window and frame are active. Identify whether you are requesting a viewport screenshot or an individual element screenshot, and verify the chosen driver supports that operation. Selenium’s Java API documents possible WebDriverException failures and unsupported capture cases; implementations can differ.

- Confirm the current window and frame are the ones whose content you expect to capture.
- Record browser and driver versions and whether the run is headless or headed.
- If using a remote driver, compare the same minimal reproduction locally and remotely, changing one variable at a time.
- Keep capture separate from storage: obtain bytes or Base64 first, then write those bytes to a known writable absolute path.
These comparisons are diagnostic techniques, not proof that any one browser, driver, or execution mode is the cause. The exact traceback and a controlled reproduction determine what to investigate next.
Troubleshoot common symptoms
The explicit wait expires, but the page appears loaded
The waited-for condition may not match the actual application state, the locator may be wrong, or the element may never become visible. Inspect the element and choose a condition tied to the screenshot’s required content. A navigation reaching readyState complete does not establish that a JavaScript application has finished its own updates.

driver.get() raises the timeout
This is a navigation/page-load issue, not evidence that a later screenshot command timed out. Check the page-load timeout and the navigation behavior. If navigation returns successfully but the page’s content is still changing, add a separate explicit wait for the needed application condition.
The screenshot call raises an exception
Preserve the complete exception and stack trace. Check that the session is active, the intended context is selected, and the requested driver or element capture is supported. Reproduce with a simple page and viewport capture before adding other variables.

The file is missing or empty
Test capture without saving through Selenium’s file helper: request PNG bytes, then write them yourself to a full path. Check that the destination directory exists and is writable. If using save_screenshot or get_screenshot_as_file, inspect its boolean return value.
Changing script timeout has no effect
That setting governs asynchronous script execution. If the failing line is an explicit wait, navigation, screenshot call, or file write, diagnose that operation instead of changing the script timeout.

Make the failure reproducible
A useful bug report or debugging note should include enough detail to distinguish the operation boundaries:
- Language binding and Selenium version.
- Browser and driver names and versions.
- Local or remote execution, and headless or headed mode.
- The exact screenshot method, whether it targets the driver or an element, and the active window/frame if relevant.
- The complete traceback and the command on the failing line.
- Whether capture succeeds when storage is bypassed, and the absolute output path if it does not.
There is no universal timeout value or single fix established for every Selenium screenshot failure. Compare whether the failing boundary is navigation, a condition wait, an asynchronous script, capture, or file storage; then vary browser, driver, or execution environment one factor at a time.
