Selenium can find an element that is hidden, zero-sized, disabled, outside the viewport, covered by another element, or replaced during an animation. Use a precise locator, an explicit condition for visibility or enabled state, and separate checks for overlays and geometry. Also avoid mixing implicit and explicit waits while diagnosing timing.
Why a wait can succeed while Selenium still cannot interact
Selenium’s rule is simple: an element must be present and displayed before WebDriver can interact with it. A presence wait proves only that a matching node is in the DOM. It does not prove that the node is visible, enabled, unobstructed, stable, or the correct match.
The Python expected-condition documentation defines visibility as displayed with height and width greater than zero. Its element_to_be_clickable condition adds enabled state. Neither condition guarantees that a modal, sticky header, cookie banner, animation, or layout shift will not cover the click point a moment later.
ElementNotInteractableException commonly means that a present element is not displayed or that its center cannot be scrolled into the viewport. ElementClickInterceptedException is different: Selenium sees a visible target, but another element would receive the click.
Start with the exact exception and matched node
- Read the complete exception. “No such element” indicates a locator or timing problem. “Element not interactable” points to display, size, enabled state, or viewport position. “Element click intercepted” points to an obstruction.
- Check how many nodes the locator matches. Responsive layouts and component libraries often leave a hidden desktop or mobile copy in the DOM. A broad class selector may return the first, hidden copy.
- Inspect the actual tag and attributes. Sending keys to a
label, form wrapper, table cell, or custom container will not work like sending keys to aninputortextarea. - Capture the state immediately before the action. Log
is_displayed(),is_enabled(), dimensions, location, and the element’s outer HTML. This distinguishes a bad wait from a bad locator.

An explicit wait polls a condition until it succeeds or the timeout expires. It is more useful to wait for the required state than to add a longer fixed sleep.

button.click()The ten-second value is an example timeout, not a universal recommendation. Set it according to the application’s documented loading behavior and fail with a useful diagnostic when it expires.
Wait for the application state that reveals the control
If a field appears only after choosing a mode, wait for the reveal action’s result rather than repeatedly searching for the hidden field.

1. You waited for presence only
The element entered the DOM but remains hidden with CSS, has zero dimensions, or belongs to an inactive tab or collapsed panel. Replace the presence condition with visibility, or perform the click that reveals the control and then wait for visibility.
2. Visibility succeeds but the click is intercepted
Inspect the exception message for the element that received the click. Typical causes are a modal, cookie or newsletter prompt, chat widget, sticky navigation, loading layer, or an animation still moving the target. Close or wait for the obstruction, then retry the ordinary WebDriver click. Do not treat JavaScript click as a general repair: it can bypass the user-visible interaction and hide a real defect.
3. The locator selects the wrong element
Use a unique ID when available. Otherwise combine stable attributes, role, accessible name, or a scoped container. Confirm the result count and inspect every match. For keyboard input, select the actual editable control, not its label or wrapper.
4. The target cannot be brought into view
Selenium’s interactability definition includes the element’s center being scrollable into the viewport. Scroll it into a useful position and re-check geometry:

If the page has a sticky bar, inspect its height and scroll position, or move the pointer with an Actions sequence and then retry.
5. Implicit and explicit waits are mixed
Selenium warns that combining the two makes total timing unpredictable: an explicit poll can be delayed by the implicit timeout inside each element lookup. While diagnosing this exception, set the implicit wait to zero and use explicit waits for each required state.

Check overlays, animations, and click-point geometry
A visible element can still be unusable because Selenium clicks its center and another element occupies that point. After scrolling, examine the target’s rectangle and use browser-side hit testing in a diagnostic script:

print(rect)If hit is a modal, banner, or animation layer, wait for that element to disappear or for its application-specific “ready” class. If the target’s rectangle changes between polls, wait for the transition to finish rather than guessing with a sleep.

A reliable interaction sequence
- Navigate and wait for the page state that matters, such as a route-specific container.
- Locate the intended node with a unique, scoped selector.
- Wait for presence only when that is the prerequisite for a later check.
- Wait for visibility before reading or typing; wait for clickability before clicking.
- Wait for known overlays, modals, and transitions to disappear.
- Scroll or move to the target when viewport position is relevant.
- Re-check the target immediately before the action and perform the normal WebDriver command.
- On failure, save a screenshot, page source, exception text, matched-node details, and overlay geometry. This evidence is more useful than increasing every timeout.
Performance, reliability, and timeout design
- Use one synchronization strategy per test suite. Explicit waits make the condition and timeout visible at the call site.
- Keep conditions narrow. Waiting for a page-wide “network idle” surrogate can hide the real readiness event and slow every test.
- Use a short polling interval only when the UI genuinely changes rapidly; the default is usually adequate.
- Choose timeouts from observed application behavior and environment variability, not from a copied benchmark. The official examples’ ten seconds is illustrative.
- Do not retry indefinitely. A timeout should fail with the locator, URL, exception type, and captured state so the underlying defect can be fixed.
- When a click causes navigation, wait for the next page’s unique element or URL condition instead of assuming the click completed the transition.
Troubleshooting checklist
- ElementNotInteractableException: verify display, nonzero size, enabled state, and viewport position; wait for the reveal state.
- ElementClickInterceptedException: identify the covering element; close it or wait for invisibility; inspect sticky bars after scrolling.
- TimeoutException on visibility: confirm the selector, frame, tab, and application state. A hidden duplicate may be the first match.
- Works locally but fails in CI: compare viewport size, device scale, animation speed, font rendering, and page timing. A different layout can expose a hidden copy or move a fixed overlay.
- Intermittent success: look for replacement of the node, animation, or layout shift. Re-find the element after the state transition instead of retaining a stale reference.
- Typing fails: target an enabled input or textarea, focus it normally, and ensure no overlay has focus.

Should I use a longer sleep instead of an explicit wait?
No. A sleep guesses how long the page needs and still does not test visibility, enabled state, or obstruction. Wait for the application state required by the next command.

Does JavaScript click solve ElementClickInterceptedException?
It can bypass WebDriver’s hit testing, but it also bypasses the user-visible interaction. Fix the overlay, viewport, or locator first; use script execution only for a deliberate, documented test case.

Why does the same selector work in one viewport but not another?
Responsive pages may render different copies or place a control beneath a fixed navigation element. Compare all matches, dimensions, and click-point geometry at each viewport.
