When Selenium raises ElementClickInterceptedException, the target element may exist and be visible, but another element is covering the point Selenium tried to click. Selenium scrolls an out-of-view element into view and normally clicks its center; inspect that exact point in the failed run, identify any obstruction or movement, wait for the page state to settle, and then retry with a normal WebDriver click. A headless-only failure calls for comparing the failing run’s viewport, geometry, timing, and browser/driver versions—not automatically replacing the click with JavaScript.
What “element not clickable” means in Selenium
The specific error is usually ElementClickInterceptedException. Selenium’s element-interaction model scrolls an element into view when needed, checks whether it can be interacted with, and attempts a click at its center. If another element obscures that point, the click is intercepted. The issue is therefore not necessarily that Selenium cannot find the element or that it is invisible; the center point must be available for the click. See Selenium’s element interaction documentation and the Python exception definitions.
That distinction matters in headless tests: a page can reach document.readyState === "complete" while JavaScript-driven rendering, a banner, or a layout shift is still changing the page. A visible target is not proof that its click point is unobstructed.

- Capture the failure state. Save a screenshot immediately when the click fails. Log the target’s bounding rectangle and the browser viewport dimensions so you can relate the element’s location to the screenshot.
- Inspect the target’s center. Check whether a dialog, consent banner, sticky header, loading layer, or other element covers the attempted point. An element can be partly covered even when most of it is visible.
- Check scroll position and fixed overlays. Selenium may scroll the target into view; that can place it beneath a fixed header or another overlay. Compare the element’s position before and after the scroll.
- Check whether the page or target is moving. Client-side rendering, animation, or layout shifts can move the target after its position is measured. ChromeDriver recommends waiting for an element to stop moving and does not guarantee a click on an element that never settles. See ChromeDriver’s guidance on click issues.
- Check the actual hit target. A compound control may contain a clickable child even when the parent’s center is not a usable point. ChromeDriver documents the example of an anchor containing an image; target the child only if it is the actual intended click target.
- Compare headed and headless runs. Record viewport size, browser and driver versions, target geometry, overlays, and relevant timing in both runs. A different responsive layout or timing can explain a discrepancy; “headless” by itself does not identify the cause.
Log the target geometry in Python
Run this near the click, including in the exception handler, so the measurements correspond to the failure rather than a later page state:
from selenium.common.exceptions import ElementClickInterceptedException
button = driver.find_element(By.CSS_SELECTOR, "button.submit")
try:
print("viewport:", driver.execute_script(
"return {width: innerWidth, height: innerHeight, "
"scrollX: scrollX, scrollY: scrollY}"
))
print("target:", button.rect)
button.click()
except ElementClickInterceptedException:
driver.save_screenshot("click-failure.png")
print("target at failure:", button.rect)
raise
The screenshot, viewport, and rectangle help narrow down the cause. They do not alone prove which element received the attempted click; inspect the visible page at the recorded point and use the exception details and DOM state to identify the obstruction.

Fix the cause and synchronize to the right state
Wait for the blocker to disappear
If a temporary overlay blocks the target, wait for that overlay to become invisible or leave the DOM. For example, with Python’s Selenium bindings:
from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
from selenium.webdriver.support.ui import WebDriverWait
from selenium.webdriver.support import expected_conditions as EC
wait = WebDriverWait(driver, 10)
wait.until(EC.invisibility_of_element_located(
(By.CSS_SELECTOR, ".loading-overlay")
))
button = wait.until(EC.element_to_be_clickable(
(By.CSS_SELECTOR, "button.submit")
))
button.click()
Replace .loading-overlay and button.submit with selectors from your application. The timeout is an example, not a guarantee that the page will be ready in ten seconds. Choose a timeout appropriate to the application and make timeout failures visible in the test report.
element_to_be_clickable is useful for waiting until a target is visible and enabled, but it does not establish that no separate overlay will cover the click point. If interception persists, wait for the known blocker or inspect the hit point rather than repeatedly retrying.

Wait for application state, not an arbitrary delay
Prefer an explicit wait for a meaningful condition: a loading layer disappears, a dialog closes, a result appears, or an animation ends. A fixed sleep can be too short on a slow run and needlessly long on a fast one. Selenium’s documentation explains synchronization and the race between test code and dynamic applications at Waiting Strategies.
Reaching page-load completion is not the same as the application being ready for a particular action. Wait for the condition that makes this click valid, and ensure implicit and explicit waits are not combined in a way that makes timing difficult to reason about.
Correct the scroll or layout problem
If the target is hidden beneath a fixed header after scrolling, address the page condition or scroll position that causes the overlap. You can scroll the target into a more suitable position and then verify the click point is clear:

driver.execute_script(
"arguments[0].scrollIntoView({block: 'center', inline: 'nearest'});",
button
)
wait.until(EC.element_to_be_clickable((By.CSS_SELECTOR, "button.submit")))
button.click()
Scrolling to the center can reduce some fixed-header conflicts, but it is not a substitute for checking the result. A persistent overlay or moving layout can still intercept the click.
Re-locate replaced elements and wait for motion to stop
If the application replaces a node during rendering, a previously stored WebElement can become stale. Locate the element again after the relevant state change. If an animation shifts it, wait for the animation or transition to finish using an application-specific condition where possible. Repeatedly clicking a moving target is not a reliable fix.
Use offsets or JavaScript only for a confirmed special case
ChromeDriver lists an offset click or JavaScript click as possible remedies for specific hit-target problems. They should not be the default response to interception. An offset is appropriate only when the intended clickable point is known and stable. A JavaScript-triggered click can bypass the browser’s normal pointer interaction, so it may make a test pass without proving that a user could click the control. Use either only when the test deliberately requires that behavior, and document why.

Why the failure may appear only in headless mode
Chrome’s documentation says unified Headless and headful modes are available. Since Chrome 132.0.6793.0, the old Headless mode is available only as the separate chrome-headless-shell binary; see Chrome Headless mode. This version distinction matters when diagnosing older setups, but it does not establish that headless mode inherently clicks differently.

Distinguish interception from other Selenium errors
| Symptom | What it points to | First check |
|---|---|---|
ElementClickInterceptedException |
Another element obscured the attempted click point. | Inspect the center point, overlays, scroll position, and target movement. |
ElementNotInteractableException |
The requested interaction is not currently possible; Selenium’s API description also relates this to another element being hit due to paint order. | Check display, in-view state, and pointer interactability; inspect paint order and obstructions. |
NoSuchElementException |
The locator did not find the element in the current DOM state. | Verify the locator and wait for the element to appear. |
StaleElementReferenceException |
The stored reference no longer corresponds to the current DOM node. | Wait for rendering to settle and locate the element again. |
These are different failure paths. Treating every one as a click interception can hide a locator, readiness, or DOM-replacement problem. Selenium’s Python exception definitions are at selenium.common.exceptions.
Common fixes that fail—and what to do instead
- “The element is visible, so click it.” Visibility does not guarantee that the center is clear. Inspect the hit point and any overlapping element.
- Increase the sleep. A longer pause does not prove the relevant condition occurred. Wait for the blocker to disappear or application state to change.
- Retry in a loop. Retrying can conceal a persistent overlay, bad scroll position, or moving target. Diagnose the state first; retry only after a specific expected change.
- Switch to JavaScript click immediately. This may bypass the pointer behavior the test should verify. Keep WebDriver’s normal click unless a documented special case justifies otherwise.
- Assume headless is the cause. Compare viewport, layout, timing, geometry, and versions to find the concrete difference.

If the goal is to inspect or save a page screenshot rather than exercise a Selenium interaction, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A GET request can return an image or PDF; the screenshot call below follows the API’s documented pattern. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

FAQ
Does a successful page load guarantee that Selenium can click?
No. Page-load completion does not establish that JavaScript-driven layout changes are finished or that the target’s center is unobstructed.
Should I use JavaScript click to fix every intercepted click?
No. First identify the obstruction or hit-target issue. JavaScript click can bypass normal pointer interaction and weaken what the test verifies.
