Scrivener freezing on Windows 10 does not point to one universal cause. First protect the project, then check whether the whole app freezes or only one project, and whether the hang occurs during a specific task such as opening or backing up. A blank-project test and a local copy of the affected project can quickly narrow the problem without risking your only copy.
Before you force-close Scrivener
If the project is large or Scrivener has just started opening it, give it a short time to finish. Windows may show “Not responding” while an app processes many project files or waits for a drive, sync service, or security scan. If it remains frozen for several minutes, move on rather than waiting indefinitely.
If Scrivener is still responsive enough, make a backup with File > Backup > Backup Now. If the project will not open, close Scrivener and use File Explorer to copy the entire .scriv project folder to another location. You can also right-click the folder and choose Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder. Do not edit or delete files in the only copy while troubleshooting.

Quick recovery and the most useful test
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Scrivener or Scrivener.exe, then choose End task. If the window has disappeared but Scrivener remains listed, end that process too.
- Restart Windows from Start > Power > Restart.
- Open Scrivener without immediately reopening the project that caused the freeze. Create a small test project in a local folder such as Documents, type a sentence, save it, close it, and reopen it.
If the blank project also freezes, investigate Scrivener’s installation, settings, security software, or Windows environment. If it works but one existing project does not, focus on that project, its location, and its saved interface state.
If Scrivener keeps reopening the troublesome project
A Literature & Latte forum troubleshooting discussion describes bypassing the saved startup state by holding Shift while launching Scrivener. If needed, pin Scrivener to the taskbar first. Keep holding Shift until the project-opening interface appears, then open a known-good project or create a blank one. Close Scrivener normally and try launching again without Shift. This is a reported troubleshooting technique, not a guaranteed reset command. See the forum discussion.
If only one project freezes
Test a local copy
Close Scrivener and copy the project to a folder on the PC’s internal drive, then open that copy. This helps rule out network availability, file permissions, cloud placeholders, and synchronization timing. OneDrive, Dropbox, and network storage are not automatically the cause, but they add variables that a local test removes. Keep a separate backup, and do not open the same actively edited project on two computers at once.

Reset the project’s interface state
If a backed-up project still freezes, a community-reported Windows workaround is to move its interface settings file out of the project:

- Close Scrivener and make sure you have a separate copy of the whole project.
- In File Explorer, open the project’s
.scrivfolder and then itsSettingsfolder. - Move
ui.inito a safe temporary location, such as the Desktop. Do not permanently delete it before testing. - Try opening the project again.
This may reset interface-related state; it is not a repair for every kind of project damage. The procedure comes from a Literature & Latte community support discussion, rather than a current official Windows repair guide.
If the Binder specifically crashes Scrivener, first preserve the project and consider exporting your options and theme settings. Rebuilding search indexes is another reported escalation step, but it is not a first-line fix. A user report describing those measures is available in this Binder-crash discussion.
Recover from a backup if needed
If the project will not open after these steps, try a known-good Scrivener backup rather than altering the original. Some backups are ZIP-style archives, not project folders that can be opened directly. Extract the archive first and locate the project’s .scrivx file. Keep the original project and archive unchanged. If Scrivener freezes during backup
A blocked or unavailable backup destination can make a backup operation—or closing Scrivener with backup-on-close enabled—appear to hang. Check File > Options > Backup:

- Confirm that the selected backup folder still exists and that you can write to it.
- Choose a local folder on a drive with free space, then test Backup Now.
- If backup-on-close is preventing the app from closing, temporarily turn that option off while diagnosing the path. Re-enable automatic backups after the destination is working.
A forum report identifies C:UsersYOURUSERNAMEAppDataLocalLiteratureAndLatteScrivener as a default backup location in one setup, but your location may differ if it was changed or the installation is different. Check the path shown in your own settings; do not assume that example is universal. See the backup-folder discussion.
Check antivirus and cloud-synced folders
Antivirus or ransomware protection can sometimes restrict an app’s ability to write to a monitored folder. Check your security product’s history or quarantine log, especially if the freeze happens while loading, saving, or backing up. Do not disable protection permanently. Instead, test a project copy in a local folder and, if your security product supports it, allow the Scrivener executable or trusted project location. Restore normal protection and retest. Forum reports make this a possibility to check, not a confirmed or universal cause.
Cloud and network locations can also introduce availability, locking, and synchronization issues. A local-copy test is a diagnostic step, not proof that cloud storage always damages projects. Avoid working on the same project simultaneously from multiple computers, and keep an independent backup before changing sync settings.
Check your Scrivener and Windows versions
At the time of the cited vendor listing, Literature & Latte’s download page showed Scrivener for Windows 3.1.6 and required 64-bit Windows 10 or later. Requirements can change, so check the official download page for the current version and requirement before reinstalling. Older Scrivener releases may have different requirements.

To check Windows architecture, open Settings > System > About and look at System type. A 32-bit Windows installation does not meet the stated requirement for the listed Scrivener 3 version. Check your installed Scrivener version under Help > About Scrivener.
When to reinstall Scrivener
Consider a clean installation if a blank project also freezes, Scrivener was moved from another computer, or the problem persists across projects. Reinstalling can replace application files; it does not repair a damaged project. Keep project folders and backups separate from the program installation, and record your license details first.
- Uninstall Scrivener using Windows’ uninstaller.
- In File Explorer, inspect
C:Program FilesScrivener3. Move any user-created files out before removing leftover program files. - If the installer download may be incomplete, clear the old download and browser cache.
- Get a fresh Windows installer from the official Literature & Latte download page and install it.
- Test with a blank local project before opening the important project. Enter your license again if prompted.
Uninstalling the app is not the same as deleting a project, but verify where your projects and backups are stored rather than relying on assumptions.
When to use Windows compatibility troubleshooting
If the problem began after a Windows update, or an older Scrivener release is involved, try Microsoft’s Program Compatibility Troubleshooter. In Windows 10, the path is generally Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Program Compatibility Troubleshooter; labels can vary by Windows build. Follow the prompts and test Scrivener. Microsoft also recommends checking for Windows and relevant driver updates in its compatibility guidance.

Do not enable an arbitrary older compatibility mode as a universal fix. If other applications also freeze, or Windows has display or startup problems, the issue may be broader than Scrivener. Graphics-driver updates or rollback, Safe Mode, and System Restore are advanced options for wider system symptoms—not first steps for an isolated app freeze. Back up important files and follow Microsoft’s guidance for display troubleshooting or Windows startup problems.
When to contact Literature & Latte
Contact the vendor through its FAQ and Learn & Support area if multiple projects still freeze after a clean install, a project appears damaged, or the failure repeats at the same action. Include:
- Scrivener version from Help > About Scrivener, and Windows edition/version from Settings > System > About or
winver. - Whether a blank project opens and whether the issue affects one or several projects.
- Where the project is stored: local drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, network share, or external drive.
- The exact action that triggers the freeze and any visible error message.
- Whether it began after an update, computer migration, security-software change, or sleep/wake event.
- Relevant Windows Event Viewer application-error details, if available. Provide Scrivener logs if support requests them.
If support asks for a project copy, consider whether it contains private or unpublished material before sending it. Do not email sensitive manuscript content unless you are comfortable sharing it.
