If a screenshot shows only part of your display, first determine whether you need the entire visible screen or a full-page capture that continues below the viewport. Select the correct capture mode for your device: Windows Snipping Tool Full screen or PrtSc, Mac Shift-Command-3, iPhone’s Full Page option for webpages, Android’s Capture more on supported Android 12-and-up screens, or a browser full-page tool such as Microsoft Edge Screenshot. A normal screenshot cannot include content that is not currently visible unless the operating system or browser performs a scrolling capture.
First, identify what “full screen” means
Two different problems are commonly described as a screenshot that is not full screen:
- The visible display is cropped. The capture tool used a selected rectangle, freeform outline, or single window instead of the whole monitor or phone display.
- The page continues below the display. You need a full-page or scrolling screenshot, not another ordinary screen shortcut.
Before changing settings, open the saved image or paste the clipboard contents into an image editor. Check whether the missing area was outside the viewport, whether a selection frame excluded it, and whether you captured a window rather than the entire display. Then identify the device, operating-system version, and app or browser.
Windows: switch Snipping Tool to Full screen
Microsoft’s Snipping Tool includes Full screen, Window, Rectangle, and Freeform modes. Rectangle and Freeform intentionally capture only the area you draw, so a cropped result may be expected rather than a failure. See Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions.

Capture the entire monitor
- Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu.
- Choose the capture mode and select Full screen.
- Take the capture, then save it from the Snipping Tool editor.
You can also press Windows+Shift+S to open the capture overlay. If the overlay defaults to Rectangle or another selection mode, change it to Full screen before capturing. Windows 10 and Windows 11 provide these controls, although labels and layout can vary by release.
Use PrtSc when you need the clipboard
Press PrtSc to take an entire-screen snapshot. Microsoft documents that the image is placed on the clipboard; paste it into Paint, an email, or another editor with Ctrl+V, then save it as a file. On a laptop, the key may be combined with Fn.
When several monitors are connected
Check the resulting image dimensions and contents. Depending on the Windows capture path and display arrangement, you may receive the active display or a capture spanning the desktop. If you need one monitor only, use the Window or Rectangle mode deliberately; if you need every visible monitor, verify the result before sharing it.
Mac: use the shortcut that matches the intended area
Apple documents three primary Mac screenshot shortcuts at Take a screenshot on Mac:
Rank #2
- CRISP CLARITY: This 22 inch class (21.5″ viewable) Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail

- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
| Shortcut | Result | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Shift-Command-3 | Captures the entire screen | You want the complete visible display |
| Shift-Command-4 | Starts an area selection | You intentionally want a portion of the screen |
| Shift-Command-5 | Opens Screenshot controls | You need screen, window, recording, timer, or save-location options |
A normal Mac screenshot saves to the desktop unless you changed the destination in the Screenshot controls. If you used Shift-Command-4 accidentally, press Escape and use Shift-Command-3 instead. With Shift-Command-5, check whether the selected mode is Capture Entire Screen rather than Capture Selected Portion or Capture Selected Window.
Why one app may still be missing
Apple notes that some apps may not allow screenshots of their windows. If the desktop and other applications capture normally but one protected app is blank or absent, treat that as an app-level restriction rather than a broken Mac shortcut. The app’s policy, account permissions, or content-protection system determines whether a capture is allowed; do not assume a different shortcut will bypass it.
iPhone: choose Full Page for a webpage that scrolls
On iPhone, a regular screenshot records the current display. For a supported webpage that extends below it, Apple’s guide distinguishes a visible-screen capture from a Full Page capture. Follow Apple’s iPhone screenshot instructions:
- Take a screenshot using your iPhone model’s normal button combination.
- Tap the screenshot thumbnail before it disappears.
- Choose Full Page in the editor.
- Use the page preview or crop controls to set the portion you need, then save or share it.
Full Page is intended for content such as a webpage that continues beyond the screen. Its availability is not established for every app; if the tab does not offer Full Page, that app may support only the visible-screen capture.

Android: try Capture more on supported scrolling screens
Google’s Android Help explains that a regular screenshot is followed by Capture more when a scrolling screenshot is supported. The documented qualification is: “These steps work on devices running Android 12 and up on most screens that allow you to scroll.” Read the current instructions at Google Android Help.
- Press Power and Volume Down together (the exact shortcut can differ by manufacturer).
- When the screenshot preview and controls appear, tap Capture more.
- Extend the selection through the content you need, then save or share it.
If Capture more is absent, check Android version, device manufacturer instructions, and whether the current screen actually scrolls. A fixed home screen, a protected app, or an unsupported view may offer only a standard screenshot. Do not infer that the phone is faulty from a missing button.
Webpages: use a full-page browser capture
A webpage that continues below the browser window requires a scrolling or full-page capture. Microsoft Edge provides a Screenshot tool that can capture a full page or a selected area, including long pages; Microsoft cautions that availability and functionality can vary by device, market, and browser version. See Screenshot Tool in Microsoft Edge.
Edge workflow
- Open the webpage in Edge.
- Open the browser’s Screenshot tool.
- Choose the full-page option rather than selected-area capture.
- Review the complete preview, then save or copy it.
For another browser, exact labels depend on its name and version. Update the browser first, then look for a command named Full page, Capture full page, or Scrolling screenshot. A normal operating-system shortcut will not automatically stitch content below the viewport.

Pages with lazy loading or moving content
Long pages may load images only as you scroll, change while advertisements refresh, or require a sign-in. A full-page result can therefore differ from what you first saw. Let the page finish loading, scroll through it once when practical, and check the final image for blank sections, repeated sticky headers, or missing images. If the site blocks automated capture, respect its access controls and use an approved export or print function.
A reliable troubleshooting sequence
1. Confirm the symptom
- If the omitted content was below the fold, switch to full-page or scrolling capture.
- If everything was visible but the image is cut off, correct the selection, window, or display mode.
2. Recheck the capture mode
Windows Rectangle and Freeform, Mac Shift-Command-4, and phone area-selection tools all crop by design. Reopen the tool and explicitly select Full screen, Entire Screen, Full Page, or Capture more as appropriate.
3. Check app restrictions
If only one application produces a blank or incomplete result, determine whether it protects its window or content. Apple specifically notes that some apps may not permit window screenshots. A general shortcut cannot override an application restriction.
4. Verify where the result went
On Windows, PrtSc puts the image on the clipboard, so paste it before concluding that no file was created. On Mac, screenshots normally go to the desktop unless the save location was changed. On phones, inspect the Photos or Gallery screenshot album and the post-capture preview.
5. Check scaling and display layout
Very large displays, high-DPI scaling, remote-desktop sessions, and multiple monitors can make an image look incomplete when it is actually a different pixel size or display. Compare the image dimensions with the display you intended to capture and repeat the test on the local device if a remote session is involved.

When a screenshot tool is the wrong tool
Built-in capture is best for a quick copy of your current display. Use a full-page browser feature for a webpage, and use an app’s own export or print command when the content is protected or interactive. For repeatable website captures in development, documentation, monitoring, or automation, a screenshot API avoids maintaining a browser setup.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture, it accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
See the complete parameter reference in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. This example captures a webpage as WebP:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
The same request in Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
And in Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Options useful for long or dynamic pages
- Full-page capture with lazy-loaded images.
- Capture one element by CSS selector, or hide selected elements.
- Choose dark mode, any viewport, 12 device presets, and retina scale.
- Wait for a selector, a delay, or network idle; click an element before capture.
- Set custom CSS and JavaScript, headers, cookies, user agent, Authorization, timezone, and geolocation.
- Block ads, trackers, requests, or resource types; use transparent backgrounds or resize images.
- Produce PDFs with paper size, margins, landscape mode, and page ranges.
- Use a cache TTL, signed links for public
<img>tags, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture for up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification.

Preventing incomplete captures in future
- Decide visible-screen versus full-page before pressing the shortcut.
- For desktop tools, select Full screen or Entire Screen instead of Rectangle, Freeform, or Window.
- For phone webpages, look for Full Page or Capture more after the initial screenshot.
- Let dynamic content load and verify lazy images before saving a long capture.
- Check the output file, clipboard, or screenshot album immediately.
- Record the device, OS, browser, and app when reporting a reproducible capture problem.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my screenshot cropped even though everything was visible?
The capture was probably set to a selected region or window. Reopen the tool and choose Full screen or Entire Screen; on Windows, Rectangle and Freeform modes deliberately crop the result, while Mac Shift-Command-4 starts an area selection.
Can a normal screenshot include content below a webpage?
No. Content below the viewport requires a full-page or scrolling capture, such as Edge’s full-page Screenshot option, iPhone Full Page, or Android Capture more where supported.
Why does Android not show Capture more?
Google limits the feature to Android 12 and up on most screens that allow scrolling. The device manufacturer, Android version, app, or protected content may not support it.
