First identify which failure you have: does pressing the buttons do nothing, does a capture occur without a preview, is the image missing from Photos, or is the saved image black or incomplete? The fix differs. Start with the correct shortcut for your iPhone, then use the button-free methods and checks below.
Try the correct iPhone screenshot shortcut
Apple’s standard shortcut is a quick, simultaneous press and release—not a long hold. Holding the buttons can open shutdown or Emergency SOS controls instead.

See Apple’s model-specific instructions at Apple Support. Press both buttons at almost the same time and release immediately. Try once from the Home Screen and once in another ordinary app. If either button fails in its normal job—for example, Volume Up will not change volume or the side button will not lock the phone—the problem may be physical rather than screenshot-specific.
Use AssistiveTouch when a physical button is unreliable
AssistiveTouch puts an onscreen control over the interface and includes a screenshot command, so it is useful when the side, volume, Home, or top button is damaged or difficult to press.

- Open Settings > Accessibility > Touch > AssistiveTouch.
- Turn on AssistiveTouch.
- Tap the floating button, choose Device > More > Screenshot.
Menu names can differ if you have customized AssistiveTouch. If Screenshot is missing, open Customize Top Level Menu and add it or replace another icon. Apple documents the feature at Apple Support and in the iPhone User Guide.
If AssistiveTouch captures successfully while the physical shortcut does not, the screenshot function is available; investigate button timing, obstructions, or hardware.
Set up Back Tap for a button-free screenshot
On an iPhone 8 or later running iOS 14 or later, Back Tap can assign a screenshot to a double- or triple-tap on the back of the phone.
- Go to Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Back Tap.
- Choose Double Tap or Triple Tap.
- Select Screenshot.
Apple lists the compatibility requirement at Apple Support and the setup path in the iPhone User Guide. A thick case, an inconsistent tapping rhythm, or accidental movement can make Back Tap unreliable; try the other gesture or temporarily remove the case.

Check Photos before assuming the capture failed
Open Photos > Collections > Media Types > Screenshots. A screenshot can be saved even when you did not notice a preview.
Apple’s current instructions for iOS 26 describe quick editing tools appearing automatically after capture. On iOS 18 and earlier, a temporary thumbnail generally appeared in the lower-left corner. Therefore, no lower-left thumbnail alone does not prove that capture failed. Use the Screenshots media type rather than relying only on Recents. The behavior and location are documented at Apple Support.
If it is missing from Screenshots
Take a controlled test capture of the Home Screen, then check the Screenshots media type again. If it still does not appear, continue with the storage and restart steps below.
Remove anything interfering with the buttons
Take off the case and any film that overlaps a button. Check for dirt or debris around the button and clean the exterior gently with a soft, dry cloth. Do not pour liquid into an opening, dig with a sharp tool, apply excessive pressure, or keep forcing a button that feels stuck.

A button that is loose, sunken, unusually hard to press, or intermittent—especially after a drop or liquid exposure—is a hardware clue. Apple’s button guidance is at Apple Support.
Check available iPhone storage
- Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- Review the available space, recommendations, and the apps or categories using storage.
- Follow the recommendations, offload unused apps, or delete unneeded content, then test another screenshot.
Apple explains this screen at Apple Support and in the iPhone User Guide. Apple separately recommends keeping at least 1 GB free for general performance at Apple Support; that is not a published screenshot-specific minimum. Critically low storage is worth correcting, but it does not by itself prove why a screenshot failed.
Restart, then force-restart if necessary
Normal restart
On current Face ID-era iPhones, press and hold either Volume button and the side button until the power-off slider appears. Drag the slider, wait about 30 seconds, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears. Apple’s instructions are at Apple Support. Restarting can clear a temporary software problem; it cannot repair a broken button.

- Face ID, iPhone 8, or iPhone SE (2nd generation or later): Quickly press and release Volume Up, quickly press and release Volume Down, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears. Apple notes that holding can take longer than 10 seconds.
- iPhone 7 or 7 Plus: Hold the side button and Volume Down until the Apple logo appears.
- iPhone 6s and earlier: Hold the Home button and the side or top button until the Apple logo appears.

Install an available iOS update
After restarting, check for an available iOS update, particularly if screenshots and other system functions began failing after a software change. An update may help with a software fault, but Apple’s available guidance does not establish a universal screenshot bug or a particular version that fixes every case. Do not assume that iOS 26, or any specific release, is always responsible.
If an update or restore appears stuck, allow it time to finish. Use Apple’s recovery guidance only when the device remains unresponsive or the process never completes: Apple logo or progress bar and update or restore problems.

If screenshots fail throughout iOS, storage is adequate, and restarting has not helped, consider Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset All Settings.

Apple says this does not delete photos, videos, apps, app data, messages, contacts, documents, or files. It does reset settings such as Wi-Fi passwords, Bluetooth pairings, Face ID configuration, privacy and display preferences, accessibility settings, and Apple Pay cards. You will need to configure those again. Back up important information first, and do not confuse this option with Erase All Content and Settings. Details are at Apple Support.

Special cases: app-specific, black, or incomplete captures
It works on the Home Screen but not in one app
Compare the Home Screen with another ordinary app. A failure limited to one app should be treated as an app or service behavior, not automatically as a broken iPhone. The available Apple guidance does not establish a universal rule for which apps restrict capture, so check that service’s own documentation rather than applying a blanket explanation.
The image is black, blank, cropped, or incomplete
First determine whether the saved file itself is blank or whether the display looked wrong before capture. A protected app view, a rendering problem, or an unsaved capture can produce different symptoms. Apple’s general screenshot guidance does not identify one cause for every black or blank image; test the Home Screen and another app, then continue with storage, restart, and update checks.
You have difficulty pressing two buttons
AssistiveTouch and Back Tap provide built-in alternatives. AssistiveTouch is available through Accessibility settings on supported iPhones; Back Tap requires iPhone 8 or later with iOS 14 or later.
When to arrange repair
Contact Apple or an authorized service provider when a side, volume, Home, or top button remains damaged, intermittent, obstructed but nonfunctional after gentle cleaning, or unusable in other tasks. Repair is also appropriate when neither the physical shortcut nor software alternatives can capture a screenshot. Apple’s button support page directs users to arrange service after obstruction and cleaning checks fail: Apple Support. No repair price is universal; it depends on country, model, warranty, and service channel.
