When an rSelenium screenshot differs from what you see in a browser, the cause is usually a mismatch in the WebDriver context—not the HTML alone. Set and verify the CSS viewport, wait for a known ready state, match device-pixel ratio and capture scope, and pin the browser environment. The workflow below isolates each variable and includes reproducible R code.

What a screenshot actually captures

RSelenium asks the browser’s WebDriver browsing context to render pixels. It does not photograph an abstract HTML document. Window dimensions, the CSS viewport, device-pixel ratio (DPR), scroll position, loaded resources, browser state and the requested clipping region all affect the result.

The RSelenium package reference describes screenshot() as taking a screenshot of the current page. Selenium’s implementation makes a best effort to return, in order, the entire page, the current window, the visible portion of the current frame or the entire display. That fallback behavior means two runs can produce different regions even when the URL is identical.

1. Record the rendering environment first

Before changing code, record the variables that can alter layout or rasterization. A reference image is useful only when these conditions are reproducible:

  • Operating system, architecture and locale.
  • Headed versus headless mode, plus GPU availability.
  • Installed web fonts and font-loading policy.
  • Color settings and, for CI, the container or virtual machine image.

Playwright’s visual-comparison guidance identifies host OS, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode and fonts as sources of rendering differences. Treat those as inputs to your test fixture, not incidental details.

2. Set and verify the CSS viewport

Host monitor resolution is not the same as the browser’s CSS viewport. Responsive breakpoints use window.innerWidth and window.innerHeight, while browser chrome and headless defaults can change the outer dimensions. SeleniumHQ notes that screen resolution can change how an application renders and provides window-resizing mechanisms for that reason.

Set an explicit size

remDr$setWindowSize(width = 1280, height = 900)
# If the reference run used the largest available window:
# remDr$maxWindowSize()

Apply the same dimensions for the baseline and actual run. In headless mode, supply a size explicitly; otherwise the browser may start with a small or implementation-specific viewport.

Inspect what the browser really received

geom <- remDr$executeScript(
  "return {
    outerWidth: window.outerWidth,
    outerHeight: window.outerHeight,
    innerWidth: window.innerWidth,
    innerHeight: window.innerHeight,
    dpr: window.devicePixelRatio,
    scrollWidth: document.documentElement.scrollWidth,
    scrollHeight: document.documentElement.scrollHeight
  };"
)[[1]]
print(geom)

Compare innerWidth and innerHeight with the reference CSS viewport, not merely the requested outer size. A mismatch here explains changed line wrapping, hidden navigation, altered breakpoints and different lazy-loading behavior.

3. Wait for the application, not just navigation

remDr$navigate(url) returning means navigation was issued; it does not prove that a client-rendered chart, image, web font or asynchronous component is complete. Selenium’s wait model repeatedly evaluates a condition until it becomes truthy, which is safer than taking an immediate screenshot.

Prefer a deterministic readiness condition

remDr$navigate("https://example.com/dashboard")
remDr$setImplicitWaitTimeout(10000)

# Locate a marker whose presence means the application is ready.
ready <- remDr$findElement(using = "css selector", value = "[data-test='dashboard-ready']")
# If the marker is not sufficient, poll its text or a loading flag with executeScript.
remDr$executeScript("window.scrollTo(0, 0);")
remDr$screenshot(file = "actual.png")

Choose a marker that represents the state you need: expected text, a populated table, a chart-ready flag or the disappearance of a loading element. An implicit wait helps element lookup but is not a complete substitute for an application-specific readiness test.

Use a fixed delay only when necessary

If no reliable condition exists, use a documented delay and accept that it is less deterministic. Keep the delay identical in baseline and actual runs. For images and fonts, verify that the resources are usable before capture rather than assuming the DOM node alone is sufficient.

Freeze animation and time-dependent UI

Transitions, carousels, blinking carets, rotating ads and clocks can change pixels between otherwise identical captures. Inject a temporary style or application flag that pauses transitions and caret blinking, and use the same stabilization step for both images:

  + "s.id = 'visual-freeze';"
  + "s.textContent = '* { animation: none !important; transition: none !important; caret-color: transparent !important; }';"
  + "document.head.appendChild(s);"
"")

Remove the style after capture if the session will continue interacting with the page.

4. Match capture scope, scroll and clipping

Decide what the reference represents: a viewport, the current window, an element crop or a full-page image. A screenshot that looks “wrong” may simply contain a different region.

  • Viewport/current window: captures what is visible at a specific scroll position.
  • Element: captures the element’s bounds; borders, shadows and overflow can change the crop.
  • Full page: requires a deliberate full-page or stitched method and can trigger lazy loading or layout changes.

Set the same scroll position before each capture:

remDr$executeScript("window.scrollTo(0, 0);")
remDr$screenshot(file = "viewport-top.png")

For a long page, do not assume screenshot() always means the entire document. Define the clipping rectangle or use the same full-page method for both baseline and actual images. Element bounds should be measured in the same viewport and after the same readiness condition.

5. Reconcile CSS pixels, DPR and output dimensions

CSS pixels and PNG pixels are different coordinate systems. On a DPR-2 environment, a 1280-CSS-pixel viewport can produce an image about 2560 pixels wide. Compare both window.devicePixelRatio and the file’s pixel dimensions with the reference.

Do not imitate HiDPI by changing browser zoom alone. CRAN’s webshot documentation warns that 2× zoom is not a true HiDPI device: a page can select different higher-resolution assets when it detects a real high-DPR device. Zoom can therefore change layout without reproducing the asset-selection behavior you need.

When the image width is wrong, inspect this sequence:

  1. Log innerWidth, innerHeight and devicePixelRatio.
  2. Check the PNG’s actual pixel dimensions with an image tool.
  3. Confirm that the reference and actual runs use the same browser scaling and headless settings.
  4. Compare CSS geometry first; only then investigate antialiasing.

6. Separate layout differences from rasterization noise

Layout or missing-content symptoms

  • Text wraps onto different lines: check viewport width, fonts, zoom and responsive breakpoints.
  • Images or charts are absent: check readiness, lazy loading, blocked requests and resource errors.
  • The page is blank: check navigation completion, bot checks, JavaScript errors and a too-early capture.
  • The screenshot is cropped differently: check scroll position, element bounds and full-page settings.

Rasterization symptoms

If boxes and line breaks match but glyph edges, shadows or antialiasing differ, the likely causes are OS, font files, GPU path, color profile or browser rendering. For pixel-perfect regression, pin a container image with fixed browser, driver, fonts and locale. For functional visual checks, use a small tolerance and review meaningful regions instead of failing on every edge pixel.

8. Troubleshooting by symptom

Symptom Likely cause Fix
Everything is scaled or the PNG is the wrong size Different CSS viewport or DPR Set the window explicitly, log inner dimensions and DPR, then compare file pixels.
Mobile or desktop layout appears unexpectedly Responsive breakpoint crossed Match innerWidth; do not rely on monitor resolution.
Chart, image or web font is missing Asynchronous loading or capture too early Wait for a deterministic ready marker and verify the resource is usable.
Only animated regions differ Transitions, carousels or caret blinking Inject the same animation-freeze style before both captures.
Top of page differs from reference Scroll position mismatch Call window.scrollTo(0, 0) (or the reference offset) immediately before capture.
Long page is cut off or unexpectedly stitched Different capture scope or WebDriver fallback Choose viewport, element or deliberate full-page capture explicitly.
Geometry matches but text edges differ Fonts, OS, GPU or browser rasterization Pin the complete environment or use a documented visual tolerance.
Blank image or timeout Failed load, bot challenge, JavaScript failure or premature capture Inspect navigation and console conditions, wait for readiness and reproduce in the same headless mode.

9. Choose the right comparison strategy

Goal Recommended setup Trade-off
Pixel-identical regression Fixed container, pinned browser/driver/fonts, explicit viewport and DPR, frozen animations Highest maintenance; detects tiny rendering changes.
Functional visual check Explicit viewport and readiness condition with a small image tolerance Less sensitive to antialiasing; may miss subtle layout drift.
Responsive coverage Run separate, named CSS viewport sizes and record each DPR More captures and fixtures to maintain.
Element verification Capture a defined selector after layout settles Does not prove the rest of the page matches.

10. Final diagnostic checklist

  • Browser, driver and RSelenium versions are recorded.
  • setWindowSize() (or its equivalent) is applied.
  • Actual inner dimensions and DPR are logged after navigation.
  • OS, fonts, locale, color settings and headless mode match the reference.
  • A deterministic application-ready condition has succeeded.
  • Animations, caret blinking and time-dependent widgets are stabilized.
  • Scroll position and capture region match the reference.
  • PNG dimensions are checked against CSS viewport and DPR.
  • The difference is classified as layout, missing content, timing or antialiasing.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a clean URL capture rather than an rSelenium session, ScreenshotNeo provides a single HTTP request. It accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I compare screenshots at CSS-pixel or device-pixel resolution?

Use the same model as your reference. Record both the CSS viewport and devicePixelRatio; compare device-pixel output only when the rendering environment is intentionally identical.

Does an implicit wait guarantee that a screenshot is complete?

No. It controls element lookup timing. A page-specific readiness condition is still needed for asynchronous charts, images, fonts and application state.

Why can two runs with the same viewport still differ by a few pixels?

Different operating systems, font files, GPU paths, browser builds or color settings can alter rasterization even when geometry matches.
