A blank screenshot from chrome-remote-interface usually means Chrome captured the wrong target or captured before that target rendered. Verify the attached target, wait for navigation and application content, inspect location.href and the DOM, then decode the returned base64 data. Only after those checks should you adjust clipping, full-page geometry, or image encoding.
What a blank screenshot actually tells you
Page.captureScreenshot captures the page currently attached to your DevTools Protocol session. Its options control the rectangle, viewport extent, rendering surface, and output encoding; they do not make an empty target render. If the target is still about:blank, the body has no content, or your client is connected to a different tab, changing PNG quality or adding captureBeyondViewport cannot repair the result.
Two useful incident reports show why the symptom needs diagnosis rather than a single “fix.” Issue #115 describes an 81-byte blank PNG from headless Canary on Mac (April 24, 2017), with other sites showing the same behavior. A separate ChromeDevTools MCP report opened January 25, 2026 describes navigation that appeared to succeed but left about:blank, an empty body, and a blank 16 KB screenshot. Those are report-specific observations, not a measured failure rate or proof of one universal library defect.
The three checks to make first
- Target: confirm the target ID and URL immediately before navigation and immediately before capture.
- Navigation: check the navigation result and wait for a load or lifecycle signal.
- Rendered state: evaluate
location.href,document.readyState, and body length; client-rendered applications may need an additional short wait or a selector check.

npm install chrome-remote-interface
Use the same Chrome version, headless mode, launch flags, target ID, and package version when reproducing a failure. Environment differences matter, especially when comparing a library capture with a direct headless Chrome capture.
Capture only after verifying the page
This complete example enables the Page domain, starts waiting for the load event before navigating, checks the resulting document, and decodes the base64 image returned by the protocol.
const CDP = require('chrome-remote-interface');
const fs = require('fs');
async function main() {
const client = await CDP();
const { Page, Runtime } = client;
try {
await Page.enable();
const loadSignal = Page.loadEventFired();
const navigation = await Page.navigate({ url: 'https://example.com' });
if (navigation.errorText) {
throw new Error(`Navigation failed: ${navigation.errorText}`);
}
await Promise.race([
loadSignal,
new Promise(resolve => setTimeout(resolve, 15000))
]);
// Give client-rendered code a chance to insert its content.
await new Promise(resolve => setTimeout(resolve, 500));
const inspection = await Runtime.evaluate({
expression: `JSON.stringify({
href: location.href,
readyState: document.readyState,
bodyLength: document.body ? document.body.innerHTML.length : 0
})`,
returnByValue: true
});
const state = JSON.parse(inspection.result.value);
console.log(state);
if (state.href === 'about:blank' || state.bodyLength === 0) {
throw new Error('Target did not render a document');
}
const { data } = await Page.captureScreenshot({
format: 'png',
fromSurface: true
});
fs.writeFileSync('scrot.png', Buffer.from(data, 'base64'));
} finally {
await client.close();
}
}
main().catch(error => {
console.error(error);
process.exitCode = 1;
});
The protocol calls the method Page.captureScreenshot and returns data as a base64-encoded image string. Writing the decoded bytes, rather than the base64 text, is essential. A valid PNG begins with the PNG signature; a file containing the literal base64 characters is not an image.

Inspect targets when the URL is wrong
If the inspection prints about:blank or a URL you did not request, list available targets and attach to the intended page instead of tuning capture options.
const CDP = require('chrome-remote-interface');
(async () => {
const targets = await CDP.List();
for (const target of targets) {
console.log({
id: target.id,
type: target.type,
url: target.url,
title: target.title,
webSocketDebuggerUrl: target.webSocketDebuggerUrl
});
}
})();
Choose a page target, not an extension, service worker, or stale tab. If your application creates a new tab during navigation, the original session can remain on about:blank; list targets again after the click or navigation and reconnect to the new page when appropriate.

Waiting for real application content
Page.loadEventFired means the document load event occurred; it does not guarantee that a single-page application has finished fetching data or painting its main component. After the load event, wait for a known selector or poll a small piece of page state.
const result = await Runtime.evaluate({
awaitPromise: true,
returnByValue: true,
expression: `(async () => {
const deadline = Date.now() + 10000;
while (Date.now() < deadline) {
const app = document.querySelector('#app, main, [data-ready]');
if (app && app.textContent.trim().length > 0) return true;
await new Promise(resolve => setTimeout(resolve, 100));
}
return false;
})()`
});
if (!result.result.value) {
throw new Error('Application content did not appear before timeout');
}
Use a selector that represents meaningful content on your site. A fixed delay is a fallback, not proof of readiness. If the page intentionally displays a consent wall, bot challenge, or login screen, record that state and decide whether it is the page you intend to capture.

A page can be visible in the initial viewport while a full-page capture is clipped, empty below the fold, or otherwise inconsistent. The project’s full-page approach measures the rendered body, sets explicit device metrics and visible size, and captures only afterward.

});
const state = measurement.result.value;

}
const width = 1365;
const height = Math.max(1, Math.ceil(state.height));
await Emulation.setDeviceMetricsOverride({

await Emulation.setVisibleSize({ width, height });

});
fs.writeFileSync('full-page.png', Buffer.from(data, 'base64'));
} finally {
await client.close();
}
})();
Keep width, device scale factor, and height explicit so repeated captures use reproducible geometry. Very tall pages may require a practical maximum height or segmented captures; otherwise memory use can grow sharply. If lazy images load only when scrolled, trigger the page’s lazy-loading behavior or scroll through the document before measuring.
What the capture options do
| Option | Use it for | What it cannot do |
|---|---|---|
clip |
A defined rectangle with x, y, width, height, and scale. | Render a target that is still empty or attached to the wrong tab. |
captureBeyondViewport |
Content outside the current viewport when the page is already rendered. | Repair failed navigation or missing application content. |
fromSurface |
Choosing the rendered surface; the current protocol default is true. | Make an about:blank target contain a page. |
format |
png, jpeg, or webp output. |
Change what the DOM rendered. |
quality |
JPEG quality; it has no effect on PNG. | Fix an empty image. |
optimizeForSpeed |
Favor faster encoding where the protocol implementation supports it. | Substitute for target and readiness checks. |
Use PNG while diagnosing because it is lossless. Select JPEG with an explicit quality when photographic output and smaller files matter, or WebP when every downstream consumer supports it. Compare these axes only after URL and DOM checks pass.

Troubleshooting branches
The screenshot is blank and the log says about:blank
Inspect the target list, confirm the WebSocket attachment, and check that you called Page.navigate on that client. A new tab, an accidental extension target, or a disconnected session can leave the original target untouched. Stop the capture and fix attachment or navigation first.

The response may be an empty shell, a failed script boot, a blocked resource, or a page that renders only after a later API call. Check console and network events, wait for a meaningful selector, and capture the evaluated URL and ready state with the failure. Do not classify an empty body as an image-encoding problem.
The file is 81 bytes or another tiny size
Treat the size as a symptom, not a threshold with a known universal meaning. Reproduce with the same Chrome and headless settings, log the target ID, and inspect the returned base64 length and document state. The 81-byte observation belongs to the 2017 issue report; it does not establish that every tiny PNG has the same cause.
The file is a blank 16 KB image after successful-looking navigation
Repeat the target, load-wait, and DOM checks. The January 25, 2026 MCP report specifically points investigators toward load waits, CDP target selection, explicit load verification, and navigation races. Compare with a direct headless Chrome screenshot as a control when possible; if the control works, focus on your CDP attachment and event order.
The top of the page appears but lower content is missing
Measure the body and document heights, set device metrics and visible size, then capture with captureBeyondViewport. For lazy content, scroll or use the site’s own “load more” mechanism before measuring. A normal viewport screenshot and a full-page screenshot are separate workflows.

The page is a bot check, consent wall, or login screen
Log the actual URL and visible state. A screenshot client cannot legitimately turn a challenge into the requested page. If the site requires authentication, supply the permitted cookies or session to your own browser context and verify that the resulting target is the one you intend to archive.
The capture hangs or the target disappears
Use explicit navigation and capture timeouts, listen for disconnected targets, and close the client in a finally block. Record Chrome version, launch flags, headless mode, target ID, and package version so a transient crash can be reproduced rather than guessed at.
Performance and reliability practices
- Reuse a controlled browser: launching a fresh browser per URL is slower and makes target selection harder; reuse a context only when isolation and cleanup are well defined.
- Bound every wait: pair load, selector, network-idle, and application waits with a deadline and return a diagnostic error containing the URL and target ID.
- Keep geometry deterministic: set viewport width, height, device scale factor, and full-page limits explicitly.
- Separate diagnosis from production retries: retry a disconnected target or transient navigation failure, but do not blindly retry a verified empty body.
- Store metadata: save the final URL, ready state, body length, capture options, Chrome version, and timestamp beside the image.
- Use a direct-browser control: when CDP output is blank, a direct headless Chrome screenshot helps distinguish a site response from a protocol-client problem.
There is no authoritative study establishing how often random blank screenshots occur. The incident sizes above are individual reports, so they should guide diagnostics, not capacity planning or reliability claims.

Does changing the file extension repair a blank image?
No. The protocol returns encoded image data according to the requested format. A blank target remains blank whether you save it as PNG, JPEG, or WebP; verify the target and DOM first.
When should I use a clip instead of a full-page capture?
Use clip for a known rectangle such as a component. Use explicit device metrics, visible size, measured document height, and captureBeyondViewport when you need the complete rendered page.
What details should accompany a bug report?
Include Chrome version, headless mode, launch flags, chrome-remote-interface version, target ID, requested URL, final location.href, readyState, body length, capture options, and the returned image size.
Is an HTTP 200 response proof that the screenshot target is ready?
No. A successful navigation response can still leave an empty shell, a bot challenge, or a client-rendered app waiting for JavaScript. Read the DOM and wait for content that matters to your capture.
