NW-31297-2 means your PS4 can’t connect to the selected Wi‑Fi network. It can appear when the saved password is wrong, but Sony also lists a busy wireless network as a cause—so the message does not prove you mistyped the password. First restart the console and router, then reconnect through Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection. If that fails, a phone-hotspot or Ethernet test can help pinpoint whether the home router or the PS4 is responsible.
What PS4 error NW-31297-2 means
Sony describes NW-31297-2 as an inability to connect to a wireless network. Its stated causes are a Wi‑Fi password that is not correctly configured on the PS4 or a busy wireless network. The password warning is a diagnostic clue, not conclusive proof: an old saved network profile, router access controls, weak signal, interference, or incompatible wireless settings can also be involved. See Sony’s NW-31297-2 guidance.
This is different from a console that joins Wi‑Fi but cannot sign in to PlayStation Network (PSN). If the PS4 cannot join the wireless network, start with the local connection. If it joins Wi‑Fi but online features fail, check PlayStation Network Service Status; an outage can affect online services without explaining a Wi‑Fi association failure. If only one game has trouble, the issue may instead be with that game’s online service.
Try these safe fixes first
1. Check the network and restart the equipment
Confirm that the router is broadcasting the Wi‑Fi network you intend to use. Then shut down the PS4 fully—not Rest Mode—before restarting the network equipment. Unplug the modem and router, wait several minutes, reconnect the modem first, and wait for it to reconnect. Plug in the router and wait until Wi‑Fi is available, then start the PS4. This general power cycle can clear temporary router or connection-state problems; it is not a special Sony command for this code.

2. Re-enter the Wi‑Fi details
- From the PS4 home screen, open Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection.
- Select Use Wi-Fi > Easy.
- Choose the intended network name (SSID) and enter its password again.
- When prompted, choose Test Internet Connection.
This follows Sony’s current PS4 internet setup instructions. Check upper- and lowercase letters, and distinguish characters such as zero (0) and capital O, or one (1) and lowercase l. If you recently changed the router password, reconfigure the connection so the PS4 does not rely on the old saved profile. Menu wording can vary slightly by system software or language.
If the network name does not appear, check that the router is broadcasting its SSID. Sony’s setup instructions also offer manual setup options; router-specific steps depend on its manufacturer.
3. Reduce wireless competition and improve signal
Sony specifically notes that a busy wireless network can cause this error. Pause large downloads or streaming, temporarily disconnect devices that do not need Wi‑Fi, and retry. If possible, move the PS4 closer to the router and reduce obstacles between them. This may help with congestion, weak signal, or interference, but it will not fix an incorrect password or a router security restriction. Sony’s PS4 support guidance also recommends reducing distance and obstructions for wireless problems.

If the password is correct, isolate the problem
Try a phone hotspot
As a diagnostic test, try connecting the PS4 to a phone’s hotspot. If it connects, the console’s Wi‑Fi can work, making the home router, its settings, or the signal a more likely source. If it fails on the hotspot too, the PS4’s saved network state, software, or wireless hardware deserves closer attention. These results narrow the possibilities; they are not guaranteed diagnoses. A hotspot may use mobile data and is not necessarily suitable for game downloads or updates.
Try Ethernet
- Connect a LAN cable from the router to the PS4.
- Open Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection.
- Select Use a LAN Cable > Easy, then run Test Internet Connection.
Sony documents this wired setup path in its internet connection guide. If Ethernet works while Wi‑Fi does not, focus on wireless signal, router Wi‑Fi settings, or the PS4’s wireless hardware. A wired connection is also a practical workaround if the cable can reach the console.
Try another Wi‑Fi band or network name
If the router combines 2.4-GHz and 5-GHz Wi‑Fi under one name, try the alternate band or SSID if available. Temporarily separating the bands may reveal a band-specific signal or compatibility issue. Support varies by PS4 model and router configuration, so consult the documentation for both rather than assuming every model supports every wireless mode.

Check router settings only after basic tests
Wireless security and access controls
Sony’s setup guide lists WPA, WPA2, and WEP among the password-protected network types for PS4. WEP is outdated and should not be used as a routine workaround. If the router is set to WPA3-only or a restrictive compatibility mode, consult its manufacturer’s instructions and test a mode compatible with the particular PS4 and the rest of the household’s devices. Sony’s guide does not establish security-mode incompatibility as the cause of every NW-31297-2 error.
Also check whether the router has MAC-address filtering, parental controls, access schedules, or a device limit that could refuse the PS4 despite a correct password. A guest network can serve as a diagnostic: if the PS4 joins it but not the main network, the main network’s access or compatibility settings may be involved. Guest networks may isolate devices from one another, so they may not suit every household as a permanent gaming connection. Do not leave a network open or disable security wholesale.
IPv4 and custom settings
Sony’s connection guide warns that its consoles do not support an IPv6-only network and advises using IPv4 if a router is configured that way. The warning appears in the guide’s PS5 section, so treat IPv6-only configuration as an edge-case router check—not an established cause of this PS4 error.

For ordinary troubleshooting, Custom setup is not automatically better. Sony’s options include IP address, DHCP host name, DNS, MTU, and proxy. Unless your network administrator or ISP gave you specific values, leave IP address, DNS, and MTU on Automatic, DHCP Host Name on Do Not Specify, and Proxy Server on Do Not Use. DNS changes are unlikely to resolve a failure to join the Wi‑Fi access point; DNS matters after the console has joined the network and needs to resolve internet addresses. Port forwarding and UPnP are generally relevant to NAT or particular online-game features, not the initial Wi‑Fi connection failure indicated by NW-31297-2.

If the console still fails after reconnection, restarts, and network tests, Sony’s Restore Default Settings option is a later console-side step. Go to Settings > Initialization > Restore Default Settings > Restore. Sony says this resets affected system settings without deleting games, apps, screenshots, video clips, or saved data. Do not confuse that option with Initialize PS4 or Initialize PS4 (Reinstall System Software). Sony says both initialization options delete user data; reinstallation also removes and reinstalls the system software. They are not appropriate first-line fixes for a Wi‑Fi connection code. When a system update or Safe Mode makes sense
Consider updating system software if the PS4 has been offline for a long time, has other system or network problems, or a previous update failed. If the console can connect by Ethernet or another network, use Settings > System Software Update. Sony also provides a USB update method; it requires a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted drive, a PS4 folder, an UPDATE subfolder, and the official file named PS4UPDATE.PUP. Follow Sony’s PS4 system software instructions and do not use unofficial update files.
Updating is different from reinstalling system software: reinstalling through Safe Mode is destructive and deletes console data. Safe Mode is not the first fix for this Wi‑Fi error. If you need to enter it for a relevant system-software procedure, turn the PS4 off by holding the power button for about three seconds. Hold it again and release after the second beep, about seven seconds after the first; connect the controller by USB and press the PS button. Sony documents the procedure on its Safe Mode page. Rebuild Database is not an established fix for wireless authentication; Sony describes it for system-feature or content-database problems.

When to contact PlayStation, your ISP, or your router maker
- Contact your ISP or router manufacturer if multiple household devices cannot connect or the home network is unstable.
- Contact PlayStation Support if the PS4 fails on several known-good networks, or if Wi‑Fi still fails after the non-destructive settings and software checks. Persistent Wi‑Fi failure while Ethernet works may point to a wireless-specific problem.
Sony provides a PS4 support and repair route for unresolved console issues. A replacement router is not a sensible first step for a problem isolated to one PS4; first establish that the router is failing or cannot be configured compatibly.
