Error 0x00000709 is Windows error 1801, ERROR_INVALID_PRINTER_NAME. It means Windows could not validate or use the printer queue it was asked to access; it does not necessarily mean you mistyped a name. The fix depends on where the error appears: setting a default printer, adding a shared printer, or communicating with a print server can fail for different reasons.
Start by identifying the failure point. If the printer is already installed, check its queue and default-printer setting. If you are adding a shared printer, verify the server name, share, permissions, driver, and network connection before changing system policies or the registry.
Choose the troubleshooting path that matches the error
| Where the error appears | Start with |
|---|---|
| Setting an installed printer as the default | Turn off Windows-managed default selection, then set the printer manually. |
| Printing to an installed printer | Check the printer state and queue; reset the Print Spooler if jobs are stuck. |
Adding a shared printer such as \ServerShare |
Check the server, exact share name, permissions, credentials, driver, firewall, and RPC connection. |
| Connecting through a server alias | Try the print server’s actual hostname in place of the alias. |
| Only one user or one printer is affected | Focus on that user’s queue, credentials, profile, or the printer’s driver rather than changing system-wide settings. |
What error 0x00000709 means
Microsoft identifies 0x00000709 as decimal error 1801, ERROR_INVALID_PRINTER_NAME, meaning “The printer name is invalid.” The name Windows is trying to use can be a local queue name, a shared-printer path such as \ComputerNamePrinterShare, a print-server hostname, a DNS alias, or a local printer port. A failure to reach or validate the queue can produce the same message as an incorrect name. Microsoft’s system error code list defines the code; its wording alone does not identify the underlying fault.
If you cannot set the printer as default
Windows may manage the default printer automatically, which can prevent the manual control from appearing. Turn that setting off, then select the printer explicitly.

- Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Under Printer preferences, turn Let Windows manage my default printer off.
- Select the printer and choose Set as default.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.

Check the printer and clear its queue
Before changing drivers or network settings, confirm that the printer itself is ready. Make sure it is powered on and connected, and check its display for paper, ink or toner, cover, or jam errors. If possible, see whether another device can print to it; that helps distinguish a printer or network problem from one limited to this Windows PC.
- Open the printer’s queue from Settings > Printers & scanners by selecting the printer and opening its queue.
- Cancel jobs that are stuck or no longer needed.
- Check that Pause Printing and Use Printer Offline are not selected.
- Retry the print or default-printer operation.
These checks follow Microsoft’s offline-printer troubleshooting guidance.

Reset the Print Spooler when jobs are stuck
The Print Spooler manages Windows print jobs. Restarting it and clearing its queue can help when the queue is stuck or the spooler is misbehaving, but it is not a universal fix for error 0x00000709.
- Search Start for Services and open it.
- Double-click Print Spooler, select Stop, then select OK.
- In File Explorer, open
%WINDIR%System32spoolPRINTERS. - Delete the files inside the
PRINTERSfolder, not the folder itself. - Return to Services, open Print Spooler, and select Start.
- Set Startup type to Automatic, then retry the printer operation.
Clearing this folder deletes pending print jobs. On a shared print server, stopping the spooler affects other users, so coordinate the reset with them. Microsoft documents this sequence in its printer connection and printing troubleshooting guidance.
Remove and reinstall a local printer or queue
If Windows lists the printer but its queue or configuration appears broken, remove that queue and add it again.

- Open Settings > Printers & scanners.

- Restart Windows, or restart the Print Spooler if a full restart is not practical.
- Return to Printers & scanners and choose Add device.
- If automatic discovery does not find it, use the manual-add option and provide the correct share, hostname, or TCP/IP address.
For a network printer, use an address or port appropriate to the printer and your network design; direct IP installation is an alternative, not a guaranteed repair. It may bypass a Windows share, but can also give up centralized queue management, accounting, or deployment. Install a signed driver for the exact model and Windows edition from the manufacturer or your IT administrator. A built-in Microsoft IPP or class driver may support basic printing, while scanning, finishing, faxing, special paper handling, or accounting may require the manufacturer’s package. An older vendor driver can itself be incompatible, so do not assume that the newest package is always suitable for a managed print server. Microsoft’s add-or-install instructions cover Windows discovery and manual installation.
Fix a shared-printer connection
A printer shared from another Windows PC or a Windows print server depends on more than the printer being online. Check each part of the path before changing the client’s registry.
- Host and share: Confirm the host PC or server is online, the printer remains shared, and the share name is exact. The path should use the form
\ServerNamePrinterShare. - Server health: Confirm the server’s Print Spooler is running and that it can print to the queue.
- Name resolution and reachability: Confirm the client can resolve and reach the intended server hostname.
- Permissions: Verify that the user account is allowed to connect to and use the printer.
- Credentials: If the client and host use separate accounts, check that the correct credentials are being used. Remove obsolete Windows Credentials for that print host only, then reconnect with the right account; do not erase all saved credentials.
- Driver: Ask the server administrator to check for a current, compatible driver on both server and client. Microsoft’s print-server guidance recommends current drivers and matching versions where possible.
- Firewall and RPC: Confirm that host and client firewalls permit the required print and RPC traffic under the organization’s network rules.
Microsoft lists 0x00000709 among errors that can occur when connecting to printers shared through a Windows print server. See its printer troubleshooting guidance. If several clients fail, prioritize the server, share, policy, and network rather than reinstalling the printer independently on each PC.

For Windows 11 22H2 and later, check RPC connectivity
Microsoft documents a change relevant to shared printers: Windows 11 version 22H2 and later use RPC over TCP by default for print client–server communication. RPC over named pipes remains available but is not the preferred configuration when TCP works. A mismatch between client, server, and firewall configuration can prevent a shared queue from being reached.
Check the network path first
For the documented RPC-over-TCP setup, the RPC Endpoint Mapper uses TCP port 135. RPC also uses dynamic ports, commonly TCP 49152–65535 in Windows configurations, though an organization may restrict or customize the range. Ask the network or print-server administrator to verify the configured range and firewall path between the client and server. Do not open the entire dynamic range broadly on an untrusted network; firewall scope should follow the organization’s security design.
Use named pipes only as a controlled fallback
If RPC over TCP is genuinely unavailable and the environment requires named pipes, Microsoft documents the following client setting. Run Command Prompt as administrator:
Best Value
- Compatible with TS3520/3522, TR4720/4722, TS3720/3722 inkjet printers.
- PG-275 Black ink yields up to 100 pages, CL-276 color ink yields up to 100 pages.
- Canon Genuine Inks provide peak performance that is specifically designed for compatible Canon printers. The PG black ink cartridge produces crisp, sharp black text for your documents and the CL color cartridge produces accurate, impressive color photos.
- Canon's FINE (Full-photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering) technology utilizes 6,000 or more nozzles inside the print heads to provide greater efficiency, higher print precision and reliable accuracy in your photos and documents.
- Don’t be fooled by imposters - look for the Canon logo on all ink packaging to ensure you’re buying Genuine Canon Ink for outstanding quality and performance you can rely on.
reg add "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftWindows NTPrintersRPC" /v RpcUseNamedPipeProtocol /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
To allow incoming connections over both named pipes and TCP on the print server, Microsoft documents this server-side command:
reg add "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftWindows NTPrintersRPC" /v RpcProtocols /t REG_DWORD /d 0x7 /f
These are administrator-level, environment-specific policy changes, not general fixes for 0x00000709. Record the original settings or export the affected key before changing it, coordinate server changes with IT, and restart the Print Spooler; if the policy does not take effect, restart the computer. Revert a temporary workaround when it is no longer required. Microsoft’s Windows 11 RPC guidance explains the settings and identifies named pipes as a fallback.
If the printer path uses a server alias or CNAME
If you connect using a path like \PrintAliasPrinterShare, test the actual print-server hostname instead:
\ActualServerNamePrinterShare
Microsoft documents a CNAME-specific 0x00000709 failure in older Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7 scenarios. That case does not establish that an alias causes the same failure on every current Windows installation, but the hostname comparison is a low-risk diagnostic. If the real hostname works and the alias does not, have the administrator investigate DNS aliasing, name resolution, service principal names (SPNs), authentication, and server naming rather than changing unrelated default-printer registry values. See Microsoft’s CNAME-specific guidance.
Keep printer security intact
Driver installation and Point and Print policies can block a shared printer when a client needs administrator approval or when a driver is unsigned, incompatible, or restricted. That can be intentional protection, not a reason to disable security broadly. Microsoft describes printer policy behavior in its Printers Policy CSP documentation.
- Install current Windows updates and use a signed, compatible driver.
- Ask an administrator to deploy the driver or connection when elevation is required.
- Use the least-permissive policy that meets the organization’s needs; managed policy changes may be controlled centrally.
- Do not routinely disable Point and Print restrictions, allow unsigned drivers, enable insecure guest logons, turn off firewalls, or uninstall security updates to make a printer connect.
On non-domain PCs or shares hosted by personal Windows computers, authentication behavior can differ from a domain environment. Check the host and client accounts and permissions instead of enabling guest access as a shortcut. If an administrator makes a temporary policy change to diagnose the issue, restore the secure setting after the test.
Quick Recap
When to contact IT or the printer manufacturer
- Contact the print-server or network administrator if multiple clients fail, the server cannot print to its queues, RPC or firewall rules are involved, the printer is deployed by domain policy, or a driver needs administrator deployment.
- Contact the printer manufacturer if its panel reports a hardware fault, direct printing also fails, or the correct model-specific driver and multifunction features are unclear.
- Keep a useful fault record: note the Windows version and edition, printer model, whether it is direct or shared, the exact queue or UNC path, whether the real hostname works, whether other users fail, the driver version, spooler status, and any recent update or policy change.
