First decide whether you need a paginated PDF or an image. Browser Print to PDF creates a document; a screenshot captures what is visible on screen or across a full page. If print preview is blank, retry the browser and destination, test another page, and check layout settings. If you need a visual capture rather than a document, use the browser’s screenshot tool instead.
Identify the failure before changing settings
Write down the browser and version, operating system, selected destination, and exact error text. Then classify the symptom:
- Preview is blank or says it failed: the browser print path, destination, or page may be at fault.
- A PDF is created but is empty or incomplete: the page’s scripts, print styles, lazy-loaded content, or background settings may be responsible.
- The result looks different from the screen: print layout is being applied, and background graphics or page-specific styles may be omitted.
- You wanted a picture: use a screenshot workflow instead of PDF printing.
The fastest scope test is to print a different website or document with the same settings. Microsoft’s Edge troubleshooting guidance treats the website or document, Edge, printer driver, Windows, and connectivity or hardware as separate possible sources. A printer driver is therefore not automatically the cause of a Save-to-PDF failure.
Fix a blank or failed print preview
Retry the print operation
- Cancel the preview and open the print command again.
- Wait for the preview to finish loading before choosing a destination.
- Close and reopen the browser if the preview remains blank.
- Select another available destination. In Edge, Microsoft specifically recommends checking whether the chosen printer is unavailable or incorrectly installed when the message is “Print preview failed.”
These steps address a stalled preview without changing the source page. They do not prove that the page itself is healthy, so continue with the scope test if the problem returns.

Try the system print dialog in Edge
Edge can bypass its in-browser preview and open the operating system dialog. On Windows use Ctrl+Shift+P; on macOS use Option+Command+P. The labels and available destinations depend on the operating system. From the system dialog, choose the PDF destination supplied by your platform, if present. Microsoft documents this alternate path in its Print in Microsoft Edge instructions.
Test another application
Open a local document or another browser and attempt the same PDF operation. If other applications work while Edge does not, update Edge and check the printer software as Microsoft suggests. If every application fails, investigate the operating-system print subsystem or destination rather than repeatedly changing website settings.
Use a different browser PDF route
Switching the route can isolate a browser-specific preview problem. It is a fallback, not a guarantee that every page will print identically.

Operating-system menus, browser editions, and available PDF destinations can vary. If one browser saves a valid file, compare the page output before deciding that the original browser is the only problem.

Enable background graphics in Edge
When colors, images, or shaded sections disappear, open the print settings and expand More settings. Turn on Background graphics, then preview again. This setting controls whether decorative and background elements are included; it will not repair content that the page never rendered.
Try Immersive Reader for a simpler page
On eligible sites, Edge’s Immersive Reader can remove navigation and other page clutter before printing. Use the Immersive Reader button in the address bar, then start the print command from that simplified view. Availability depends on the website. Because Immersive Reader changes the presentation, do not use it when preserving the original visual design is essential.

Expect print layout to differ from screen layout
Web pages commonly use print-specific CSS, different page widths, and pagination. A PDF may split a section across pages, omit fixed-position elements, or reflow columns even when the browser tab looks correct. Check page orientation, margins, scale, and the page range before saving. If the output is visually wrong but the file is not empty, treat it as a layout issue rather than a preview failure.
When the PDF is the wrong output: capture a screenshot
Use an image capture when you need a visual record of a selected region or a complete webpage, not searchable or paginated document text. Edge’s Screenshot tool supports a selected area or a full page, with markup and saving or copying; Microsoft notes that controls and availability can vary by browser, device, and version. In Firefox, use the page screenshot command and download the resulting image as described in Mozilla’s web-page printing and screenshot help. A screenshot image is not a substitute for a PDF when you need selectable text, links, page numbering, or a paper-size document.

Capture a full page reliably
- Allow the page to finish loading and scroll through it once if images are loaded on demand.
- Choose the browser’s full-page option rather than a viewport-only selection.
- Check the saved image dimensions and inspect the bottom of the page for clipped or unloaded content.
- For a specific panel, select the region or element instead of capturing the entire page.
Browser captures can still reflect cookie banners, newsletter dialogs, chat bubbles, and bot checks. Close those overlays manually before capturing when the browser tool allows it.
Check PDF-extension behavior when a PDF is already open
If the failing workflow starts with an already-open PDF and a browser extension, verify how the browser handles PDF documents. Adobe’s browser-extension PDF printing guidance, updated April 1, 2026, points to Chrome and Edge PDF-document settings that determine whether PDFs open in the browser or download. This check applies to extension-based printing of an existing PDF; it is not a universal fix for a webpage that will not print.

Troubleshooting checklist by symptom
“Print preview failed” appears immediately
- Cancel and reopen the print dialog.
- Restart Edge.
- Select a different available printer or PDF destination.
- Try the system dialog shortcut.
- Print another page to separate a page-specific fault from a browser-wide fault.
The preview is white, but another page works
- Reload the original page and wait for scripts to finish.
- Try Immersive Reader if the site supports it.
- Check whether the page relies on a login, an overlay, or content that appears only after interaction.
- Use a full-page screenshot if the requirement is visual rather than document output.
The PDF saves, but images or colors are missing
- Enable More settings > Background graphics in Edge.
- Check orientation, margins, scale, and page range.
- Compare the print preview with the live page; print CSS may intentionally change the design.
The PDF contains only part of a long page
- Confirm that the print range is not limited to the current page.
- Allow lazy-loaded sections to appear before printing.
- Try the browser’s full-page screenshot when an image is acceptable.
A browser extension cannot print an open PDF
- Review Chrome or Edge PDF-document behavior settings.
- Test opening the file in the browser versus downloading it.
- Retry without the extension to determine whether the extension is the failing component.
The screenshot includes popups or a consent banner
- Dismiss the overlay manually and recapture.
- Use a capture service that handles consent and common widgets before taking the shot.
- For authenticated pages, supply the required cookies or headers only through a workflow you control.
Keep captures dependable over time
For occasional work, save the browser name, operating system, destination, and page URL alongside the file. For repeat jobs, define a fixed viewport, wait condition, output format, and page range; record whether the result is a PDF or image. Re-test when a site changes its layout or authentication. A screenshot service can expose whether a request produced a clean page, failed, or came from cache, which is more actionable than silently saving an empty file.

Will a PDF made from a webpage remain searchable?
Usually, browser print-to-PDF preserves selectable text when the page renders text as text. A screenshot image does not provide searchable or selectable document text.
Can I print a page that requires a login?
Only if the browser session is authenticated and the page permits printing. Automated captures require an authorized cookie, header, or token supplied through the capture workflow.
Why does the same page print differently on two computers?
Browser edition, operating system, installed fonts, print CSS, destination settings, and page scale can all differ. Compare those inputs before treating one result as a defect.
Is a screenshot suitable as legal or archival evidence?
That depends on your organization’s requirements. Preserve the original URL, capture time, file, and relevant access context; a screenshot alone may not provide the pagination or metadata expected for a formal record.
